no, it does not zoom optically. it will zoom digitally if it is turned on.

The Lumix is a good camera and very similar to the SX. I bought the Canon cos i have used many Canons before, from SD200 to 40D DSLR and 5D in near future.

The SX is bigger than the SD990. If u like manual control, dont mind slightly bigger size, want 12x zoom, HD video, then buy the SX. If u want small, auto control, ok with 3.7x zoom, and no need for HD Video, then the 990. Both have DIGIC 4 so pic quality is good under iso200! For me, i chose the SX and would recommend it!

i wrote a response yesterday but disappeared!

Get your SX from Costco for $329 (black only)! I bought mine (blue) from Amazon for a little more.

The 970 is a better choice than the 990 with similar features as the SX, except for the manual control and only 5x zoom instead of 12x zoom, The 970's wide angle is 37mm vs. 28mm on the SX. I like wide zoom and that's why i picked the SX even though it is slightly larger but u can easily get used to that!

thanks for finding that store man, i live 11 minutes away by car, ill ask my dad and hope to get a good answer because i reallly want a good camera to take amazing pictures with and HD videos so I can take it to Slovakia, I really like this camera but people are complaing that the flash pops out every time you start it, is that a real big deal or something?

If my dad says no then which would you prefer, the Canon PowerShot SD970 or the Flip Video UltraHD?

The pop-up flash is not a big deal and you'll get used to it in a day or so.
