@CobraCommanderTFW Of course, keep in mind, I am a huge UC Gundam fanboy, and the only alternate universes I really like are G Gundam and Turn A Gundam because they are balls to the wall insane. A ROBOT ON A HORSE DRIVEN BY AN ACTUAL HORSE.
I guess I like UC enough that I was able to soldier my way through ZZ. And G-Savior. Never again. Never again.
Aw, who am I kidding, I'm forcing myself to sit through Headmasters right now. I'm a glutton for self-abuse, I guess.
The movies are indeed a whole lot better and cut out a lot of the stupid shit you didn't like. I'd probably recommend the 0079 movie trilogy over the actual series, at least for the original series. The pacing is a whole hell of a lot better, too.
However, I'd recommend the Zeta Gundam show over the Zeta Gundam movies. The way the Zeta Gunadam movies are edited makes absolutely no sense unless you've already seen the show, and it mixes modern and 80s animation in a way that just doesn't mesh.
@Gammatron64 ah see i was worried that the 0079 movie would be similar to the zeta ones, like you said they take out way to much relevent material. Good to hear i was wrong
@CobraCommanderTFW Yeah, nothing important is lost in the 0079 movies. In fact, while the events of the ending are pretty similar, it just feels more "organic" and natural. In the beginning of the series, it's too slow, and then its over so abruptly you're like "what, it's over? For reals?"
Gundam 0079 was actually going to be longer, but was canceled, and that is why the ending with Lala and the newtypes is so abrupt.
@CobraCommanderTFW To me, the "definitive" Gundam is either the movie series or Gundam: The Origin, but I'd recommend you check out the novels. They are COMPLETELY different, and a lot more mature \ realistic and go into the politics and history of the conflict a lot more. It makes stuff like newtypes and Zeon make a lot more sense.
Amuro isn't a whiny bitch, he has an affair with Sayla... and the ending is super hardcore and ballsy and will surprise the shit out of you.
@Gammatron64 arent they ment to be doing an anime of The Origin at somepoint? sure i heard that somewhere.Plus makes alotta senese if the show was ment to be longer but was cut, at the same time i think it had more than enough eps i dont think i could have taken many more lol
@CobraCommanderTFW I think they're making it, I dunno, it could be a rumor. If it's the case, I'm pretty excited about it.
I'm a little sad you didn't like 0079 that much, but again, my introduction to it was the movies and not the show, and it was about when Wing came out and I decided it was a million times better than Wing. I'd say 0079, 0080, the 08th MS Team, Zeta Gundam, and G Gundam are my favorites, to be honest. Unicorn is up there, too. Can't stand SEED.
Gundam armor was done away with in the trilogy and replaced with the core booster a souped up more maneuverable core fighter mahq.net/mecha/gundam/msgundam/ff-x7-bst.htm and when they go back into space the guntank is left at Jaburo and they are commissioned another Gun Cannon which Hayato operates.
Love the TV series. The quality of the animation doesn't matter to me like watching old disney movies the plot, character development and mood carry the show. From about 1965 - 1988 Disney went through a period of pretty horrible animation but still produced classics like the Jungle Book and Fox and The Hound. In order to fully understand what is going on in the movie trilogy the TV Show is a must watch.
dont forget the child nudity in the original Japanese release. 0079 is still great ... so great that it is being redone as such with #Gundam The Origin
You say 42 episodes for 1979 would be a struggle? Well, the original Tetsujin-28 (Gigantor in America) series had 97 episodes total and that series started in 1963. And if that's not ridiculous enough, the original Astro Boy series started in the same year as Tetsujin-28 but was 197 episodes total.
0079 was a groundbreaking series and one that started the real robot genre. Its influence and story still endure today. You know a series is special when people are still talking about it 32 years later. I loved 0079, I first watched it on the original CN Adult Swim in 2001. While of course everyone points out the dated animation it still does not take away from the story or characters. Gundam is a classic.
@WeskerGriff not sure if it holds up as a classic in my eyes but its kool to see someone thats very passionate about the show and like you say you gotta respect it
Apparently, Tomino never liked the G-Armor either, and it was replaced with the Core Booster in the movies. Wasn't it written out of continuity or something?
@RiderManX0 urggghhhh yea they made a big thing about that, WE DONT HAVE SALT!!! ARGHHHHHHHHHH, they went to the wrong place becasue the lake moves every 500 years or so lol i forgot all about it
I did enjoy 0079 mainly because it felt like a bunch of people on sedatives trying to be erratic. Honestly you never knew what was coming next, characters were unpredictable, story rather messy and the animation has a very low budget charm. It's no masterpiece but like you said, if you like gundam you kinda owe it to yourself. Zeta is the real payoff from watching 0079 though in my opinion. I loved Zeta and watching 0079 before hand really add's to it. Great overview bud :)
@exillionXLR oh man i love zeta as well its a vast improvment on the series and it has The O, shit i love that thing its just a shame ZZ gundam was a bit of a flop lol Glad you enjoyed this lil overview man. Oh i didnt mention this at AA but you had some fuckin great gundam t-shirts where did you get them?
@Timey2Wimey That's because their culture is more accepting of the human form. It has to get pretty raunchy before they consider censoring and really late at night everything is uncensored.
Totally agree with you about 0079: It needs to be viewed at least once to see where it all came from. With that being said, I heard there was some compilation movies out there, I've just never seen them. Only Char's Counterattack. I will also say that rather than going through the whole of Zeta, try the New Translation trilogy (Despite my issues with it) as thats a far easier to swallow account of events. Plus: GACKT!!
@EVOLUTION117 if i ment it to be a pun like that i would have made a joke about it or said "wow that was lames" lol i honestly didnt mean to do it, one of those fun things i do i guess lol. I was actually planning to do Tales From The Crypt for the next DVD ramble for somthing a lil more of a curveball but i will try and have a look at those things you suggested
Ok, naked people and purvy like people are often seen quite a lot in Japanese media, different sense of morality you see. The show actually had 43 episodes, one epiosde was never dubbed into English, probably because the creator Toshiyuki Tomino (a guy with a history of anime abuse I shall could it :D) wasen't too fond of that episode I think. The UK had the movie DVD's, but I don't know if they are still in print, in America you can get the series dubbed by the Ocean Group in Canada.
@David315842 yea ive noticed *rolls eyes at the japanese* but usally its done to make a character sexy and give some fan service here it wasnt even for that which was odd. I didnt know about 1 of the eps not being dubbed which is kinda intresting, im guessin it wasnt good if it was cut. I dont plan on gettin these of dvd, i didnt enjoy the show that much
@CobraCommanderTFW fair enough, but no the episode dealth with issues that Tomino now wished they didn't go into or something? i'm not even sure if it's aired with the other episodes in Japan now. Sometimes they have women naked as an art form, but who knows what Yoshiyuki (not Toshiyuki as i mis-spelt it before) Tomino was thinking, at the time he was incredibly depressed and after Gundam, created the waste of space that is Space Runaway Ideon, or Idiot as I call it.
@CobraCommanderTFW Tomino kills everybody off in that anime. he does tend to kill off a lot of characters in his anime and mangas, but usually there are a few survivors, Ideon leaves nothing behind and thus it's a waste of time. I mean watching something where evryone dies at the end, you might as well kill yourself right then and there.
@CobraCommanderTFW oh it is far sub-par I'm afraid. if memory serves the movies may have been dubbed first, but whether they did or didnt the cast is different
and on top of that they throw in various annoying bits like pronouncing char's name "sha" as a misguided homage to the japanese dub.
if you didnt like the g armor of the anime you may like the core boosters of the movies, meant to fill the role of the fighter plane, and nothing more
@jiidee no not for a man that doesnt like mech shows for the most part, Gundam 08th MS Team might be more your cup of tea, its the least gundam show ive seen so far

"It blew my mind."
Intentional or Unintentional pun? As for more DVD Rambles, I'd say yes, certainly. To which I may ask if you've seen/suggest the following:
Hellsing Ultimate - It's Dracula fighting Nazis.
Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still - It's Epic, there are no other words for it.
Fist of the North Star/Hokuto No Ken - 109 episodes of exploding heads, and other body parts.
