MashaAllah (this is what God has willed) :) Homeless people get such a bad reputation in America. This man seems so humble and he's spoken a small plain statement with a strong message.I hope people including myself, have more empathy towards those who have lesser privileges and provisions than us.
Good video but install a lightweight Linux distribution like lubuntu on the computers. I saw a video on YouTube where kids made a computer lab out of old computers that were going to be recycled but they replaced Windows ME and XP with lubuntu.
i liked that egger guy, especially his talk of how to utilize money. vote for a guy like THAT for president. a guy who knows how to manage money wisely, and knows how to handle a budget properly.
this may seem like an ignorant question, but i come from a land where there are practically no homeless people, atleast not in my town. but back to the question, why are these people homeless? did they lose it to drugs? lack of jobs?
The US has not social net because it wants people to rely on themselves and not the government. Because there is no social net to catch people, banks can foreclose on a house and make people homeless. Likewise, the government does not pay unemployment people's rent when they can't work. Thus, they lose their flats or houses, making them homeless. It is really backward thinking and the US pays in terms of high crime rates. It is a shame for such a rich country.
There are many homeless people in my area, The OC, but they stay away from shelters because of the number of drug addicts and people that need mental treatment. This is a BIG concern for the homeless that just want to be safe at night, and it's also the biggest hurdle in understanding how to help the poeple that need it most. I find that the answer lies somewhere between public healthcare, and available shelters. What do you think?
You are amazing, Shawn. And this video is fantastic. Homelessness is a cause that I care about deeply and it was wonderful to see this video. I am going to share this with as many people as I can.
You are an extraordinary human being. Just keep it up :)
I love how easily the discussion on poverty and aid transfers between Bangladesh and America.
(And from a production perspective, I really didn't miss the music. The video was every bit as powerful - perhaps more so as my attention was really focused on the words being spoken.)
I've been wondering were there people out there who are concerned about OTHERS.....people are so selfish nowadays......This is uplifting and needed. It keeps me grounded......This could very well have been me! God Bless You!
Amazing. And they're right. It's true, if you chase money you do run forever. Homeless people are normal people. So much awesomeness in one video. How do you do it? We need awesome like this everywhere.
There are so many amazing quotes in this video that really show how truly awesome people are. Thank you so much Shawn for showing us these ultra inspiring videos-- they can make even the worst, 'hardest', most boring day a lot brighter!
the white dude with the well trimmed goatie, i like him. smart. fuck the government, we'll do it ourselves. he needs a tax break, not the koch brothers.
He is so right when he said, "Homeless people are just like everyone else, the only difference is that they don't have a home". If only other people view it the same way. And if only others try to make a difference like Shawn, wouldn't this world be a better place?
Man, you manage to convey so much in your videos, it's amazing. I love them. I've said it and I'll say it again: this may be the best subscription I have. :) (and, um, I'm subscribed to TEDtalks too... so that's saying a lot). :) Keep it up!
Love the new camera. The American government has the money to do a lot more for the homeless people of America. Even just the prejudice. People act as if they are not there, ignore them and treat them like they aren't humans. As well as that, its unfortunate to see that much of the world is devised into hierarchy due to wealth. You would never see a wealthy business man and a homeless man sitting down having a chat. We need to decrease world suck!
@MacFadden01 Problem is people don't want the government to spend money to help the homeless. During the bottom of the recession around '09/10, when the government wanted to extend the unemployment aid and increase it slightly so that the unemployed don't become homeless, a majority of the congress blew up in flames crying socialism and what not. Imagine what a tea party member would say reading your comment
The problem isn't the government. It's us. So your right: WE need to decrease world suck
@adventerer Yes. I totally agree with you. I am doing what I can to decrease world suck. But imagine the impact it would have if the government got more involved as well? The American people don't know what they want. What we need is a group of people in the tea party to just go through with it. Its an obvious choice and I don't think it should be voted upon.
This is beautiful; thank you for maintaining the integrity of this organization in your video and for promoting a NGO that truly promotes change from the roots up! :D
This is the America that people from other countries should see. Especially from Europe, where I live, where many people just have stupid clichees about Americans in their head.
Then they would realize that outside the clichee-box, you guys aren't selfish and ignorant at all.
I'm glad those restaurants hold onto the leftovers so the shelter can take them- and that they're allowed to do so. There were laws making it highly difficult for that sort of thing where I went to college, and it frustrated me to no end that so much food was wasted as a result.
But they aren't all like everybody else, in Norway the only people who are homeless are those who choose to be (excessive social security gone amok really...) and they are weirdo's, they have 50 cats etc.
So many great quotes! I love it when people can put things in brand new ways, and I really love watching people help each other out just because it's the right thing to do. Thanks for this video :)
@fizzylimon It is starting to feel that a video uploaded on this channel is not complete unless it has a comment from you <3 Thanks for sticking around :D
"When I walked out of my apartment for the last time, I didn't leave my brain inside... I didn't leave my soul inside". That just really struck me. So often you see homeless people being treated as though they are blind, or deaf, or stupid, or unworthy. This video is awesome.
Hey Shawn, a technical question, if you don´t mind. What kind of setup do you use for this kind of run-and-gun interviews? (Camera, mic, stabilizer...) Thanks a lot.
@1650million Hey - i used a Panasonic GH1 with a prime lens to film this. I used a shotgun mic for the stuff filmed indoors and I, for some of this, borrowed some sort of brace device from Mark Horvath. It's hard to describe it - it's not a tripod, but more like an extension poll.

Inspiring. Thoughts with all people around the world without a home of their own. We regularly go through our house and be pretty brutal about looking at what we dont use or havent used in say a year. If we dont see it honestly being used in the near future, it goes to charity to either distribute or sell for funding at their 2nd hand shops which is then pumped into the charity. We were below the poverty line for many yrs and still strugle, but always know there are worse off. We do what we can.

This is so amazing! I actually do a project here in Miami every week where we go to feed the homeless Downtown and distribute food. It's an amazing feeling.
I'm currently doing an Opposing Viewpoints project in English 11 Composition Class, and I chose the Homeless, I believe more effort and aid should be applied towards the homeless, and as the title suggests, Homeless are like everyone else, except that they don't have homes.
What an eye opener, in only 3 minutes, my perspective on homeless people is already changing! I feel guilty for being suprised at Eric's eloquence! This video inspires me to watch more of his story. I love that he says "When I walked out of my apartment for the last time, I didn't leave my brain inside, I didnt leave my soul inside. That's still tucked neatly inside of me."
nystate dosent allow resturants to give unserved food away! ive worked for many resturants and we've had to waste food instead of giving it to a shelter. As a person that is a part of the hiring process at my job its sad the hear that employers are recinding job offers to the homeless. as an employer I belive you have a responsibility to invest in the community you do business in! And homeless employees prob show up to get the job done!
Thank you! More people need to realize that you can be poor or homeless and yet have a phone! And that they are just like you and me. I love this channel because it spreads the truth out there (: I did something like this last year (8th grade) and we went to LA and stayed there for a few days to do service, buy food, etc. for homeless people. Even though we stayed up really late and woke up at 4am it was worth it :) Thanks for the videos guyz!
