  • great

  • .. This is terrific! What Talent MrClark was.. He is sorely missed.. Gotta love, MissCarlo, too :)

  • People talk Crosby, people talk McGuinn, people talk Hillman...I just wish more people realized and understood the greatness and influence of Gene Clark and the Byrds. They sure did.

  • @bughead3 I think everyone who was part of the days and times of the byrds like I was do know and always did from the very start gene was the songwriter and lead voice of the group. I'm not sure where you're coming from unless you mean after the byrds, and solo careers that followed? mcguinn is a great music arranger and fine guitarist. crosby's voice can sore fantastic heights. he proved it in the byrds and crosby, stills, nash, and young.hillman is just so multi-talented at everything he does!

  • @TheBabyboomkidof53 did you really mean to say "sore" or was it "soar" you were after?

  • @bughead3 I hear you man, right on !!! Gene will always be my fave Byrd !!!

  • @bughead3 Gene Clark was talented but dysfunctional, what his fear of flying and his heroin and booze problems.

  • @bughead3 I always tell people who like the Byrds to look and see who wrote all the best Byrds songs...Gene Clark was a really great songwriter and singer. Set You Free This Time; Feel A Whole Lot Better...and then after the Byrds, She Darked the Sun; Polly Come Home; Through the Morning, Through the Night, etc, etc, etc...great, great stuff.

  • carla olson is getting into it! LOL

  • I've been a gene clark fan since 1965 and the first byrds album and singles were issued. one of the very best singer/songwriters ever. he sings other peoples music with just as much conviction also. john fogerty should be proud here.

  • well, lol, yeah, when i get a computer I'll do that, ...shoot fire, it probably better than trying for intelligent conversation among fans, huh

  • Genes vocal range and knack for singing a solid melody made harmony fun I bet, and carla does great...Im not familiar with Carla Olsen...what is her history???/

  • @MrBruceBarham Try Google

  • @MrBruceBarham She was the singer in The Textones, an 80´s band, right?

  • @ClubViking63 I googled her, shes down quite a lot with several people..I certainly like what she did with gene.....there's a sense of earthiness , a reality that shes really a musician instead of a singer, ya know?

  • @ClubViking63 yes she was. out of Texas I believe.

  • @MrBruceBarham Carla is a true singer & has been around the block for over 30 years........dating back to the 70's. has played in venue's throughout her career, a laid back performerm but a solid person and true singer to say the least

  • @MrBruceBarham she's an olson twin

  • @MrBruceBarham the textones

  • @MrBruceBarham s

She used to be in a Texas punk band, The Textones. But has extensive roots in blues, country blues and country music.

  • @MrBruceBarham country rocker going back to the 60's, tough strong lady that will out sing anyone

  • Thought I was the only Gene fan who is also a fan of of the Jayhawks! No-one I know has heard of either!! This is GREAT!!!!

  • Last song the Jayhawks did at first ave....Tim and Karen it sounded great!!!!!

  • @DougM63 I'm sure the Jayhawks will see your comment posted here on a Gene Clark video,

  • @McGarVision Don't be so sure. A lot of these bands don't even look at youtube. And even to the extent that they do, I think they are more apt to look at video clips their own material.

  • Oh Carla, what big teeth you have. Big enough to eat me with. .....This is a great cover.

  • Beautiful & sweet take of this great song. I lost my "So Rebellious a Lover" years ago, and miss this one and the rest of the cuts, like Gene's version of "Hot Burrito #2". In a perfect world this song is better known. Also, in the same world, Gene Clark is more popular and highly regarded than Kenny Chesney! Country Rock Forever!

  • he was great even choosing songs and doing covers!

  • singing with spirit

  • Forgive me, I never heard of these folks before but there is talent there.

  • What a great voice Gene Clark had.

  • Gene and Carla look and sound soo beautiful together on this! We're big fans.

  • Gene and Carla were great performers together.

  • Reminds me of Ian & Sylvia's style of duet singing.

  • Carla Olson also did an album with Mick Taylor of the Stones. This particular song sounds like an Everly Brothers number.

  • I like it! It does indeed sound like Don & Phil!

  • Gene is so great and so missed!

  • <Me too. the greatest!

  • I really hope John Fogerty has listened and watched this - what a credit it is to him!

  • another fogerty classic. great job by gene.

  • I miss Gene Clark and Rick Danko

  • One of the most under-appreciated talents.

  • Gene Clark willl never die. He will live forever in our hearts.

  • I like this, beofe ilost everything to a fire, my fav album was Gene with the dillards, songs were great, both albums, nice to hear this , never heard of the gal,,glad we have youtube

  • All of Gene's recordings with Doug Dillard are available on a single cd which is actually very inexpensive. "So Rebelious A Lover" has been recently rereleased on CD as well. Both are nicely done and well worth it.

  • This is great - Is the full video available anywhere?

  • no...see our motto

  • The most underrated singer of all time. This man was pure class.Forever missed.

  • just an awesome, awesome feel good song

  • The look he shoots her at 1:46, when she gets the words right that he botched earlier(let the music have it's day), is priceless! But who cares about perfection? This is soulful stuff.

  • If you watch the John Fogarty version of this song (that he wrote)it appears that he sings it the same as Gene Clark.

  • Gene was at his best when he had someone to work off imo-with the Byrds, with Doug Dillard, the Gosdin Brothers and here with Carla Olsen.

The album this is off of is brilliant but around the same time he released a solo effort called 'Firebyrd' that was pretty woeful.

  • When Gene was "on" he was REALLY on......great song.

  • They are an excellent pair.

  • Don't really know about Gene and Carla, but their version is incredible. That's what i respect about the old songs; they transcend any style...

  • I guess I never realized until now just how much Gene sounded like Rodney Crowell.

  • This is more folk than country, very good cover. John Fogerty's live version is my favorite. Gene was the best songwriter in the Byrds, too bad they could not keep it together longer.

  • Gene has always had good taste in music

  • Searchers also covered this in their 1980 Rockfield sessions.

  • John Fogerty??? Gene Clark was a genius, way in front of everybody, This is brilliant.

  • Ahem. John Fogerty wrote and recorded this song first.

  • @McGarVision - yes, indeed he did and he did it well ;-)

  • Really glad to see this on video. I've collected hours of Byrds-related video but had not seen this one before. Thanks!

  • I have been listening to this performance and actually like it far better than John Fogarty's, and Fogarty wrote the song! Shows you what a great song can do. Kudos to John and Gene is missed so badly.

  • It is so cool when this stuff comes out of the woodwork. It makes me love YouTube again, briefly.

  • "Dillard and Clark" seamlessly blended bluegrass, country and rock and was done in 1969, a full 10 years before JD Crowe and the New South gained great acclaim (and hatred)for doing the same thing. Just listen to their rendition of "Crying Holy". This is a lovely country themed rendition of Fogarty's great rock a billy tune.

  • yes, your so right........God bless Gene and bless his soul.....I miss his beautiful music...too long. What has it been??? 17 years ago.......

  • Awsome..

  • WUNNERFUL!!

You know that of course. ;-)

    Christian

  • Their unique voices blend wonderfully. Neither Gene nor Carla has yet to get the attention each deserves.

  • IMO the best versions of the song are by Dave Edmunds and by The Searchers.

  • Fogerty's original trumps them all...

  • Sure - but this is a wonderful country version - love from a JF fan

  • @ShockDoc before listening to this version i thought like you but now i think gene shows so much talent that even if its very simple its the greatest.

  • @ShockDoc you can here an audio track of the searchers version at a site called imeem

  • @spacepatrolman imeem is gone but almost saturday night by the searchers is in youtube

  • It's so much better than the album version!

  • Amazing! Beautiful!

    Thanks a lot for shared!

  • thanks and don't miss my other Gene Clark video posted here--"Gypsy Rider"

  • This is before my time. Could somebody give me a brief history of Gene Clark?? Carla?

    These videos were really good!

  • Gene Clark was a founding father of "folk rock" as a key member of The Byrds and their best songwriter. After the Byrds, he also influenced the birth of country-rock through his work with country roots artists Dillard & Clark. In the latter part of his career, he teamed briefly with Carla Olson--formerly of The Textones-- for a brilliant album called "So Rebellious a Lover" The song performed on this video appeared on that album....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

  • Approximately what year was this version performed? And what show, if you know?

    I LOVE IT! thanks.

  • The record was released in 1987, so this should have been sometime in 1987 to 1989 I would guess. Clark died of alcohol-related problems in 1991. Carla Olson was quoted as saying "The really talented people have no sense at all".

  • Thanks for the info! The harmony here is outstanding!

Sorry to hear that Clark passed away. Gene Clark, rest in peace!

  • A Major League baseball scout, Jay Camel enlightened me on the genius of Gene Clark in the early 90's. Among the many brilliant tapes he sent me were a half a dozen tunes of Clark's duet with the beautiful Carla Olson. How special it is to see these videos of them!! Thanks so much for posting and thank you Mr. Camel....wherever you may be 'bird-doggin'" these days, buddy!!!

  • Incredible performance.

  • Nice country version of one of John Fogerty's best tunes. Kind of reminds me of the Everly Brothers! A+

  • Blonds and Fogerty....am I in heaven?

  • This is a great country version - John's is the only and best rock version.

  • That's a big word, as good as the original. John would blow theim of the stage!

  • That's a big word, as good as the original. John would blow theim of the stage!

  • Wow! Thanks! This is awesome! This is as good as the original. I'm a huge Fogerty and Byrds fan by the way. :)
