People talk Crosby, people talk McGuinn, people talk Hillman...I just wish more people realized and understood the greatness and influence of Gene Clark and the Byrds. They sure did.
@bughead3 I think everyone who was part of the days and times of the byrds like I was do know and always did from the very start gene was the songwriter and lead voice of the group. I'm not sure where you're coming from unless you mean after the byrds, and solo careers that followed? mcguinn is a great music arranger and fine guitarist. crosby's voice can sore fantastic heights. he proved it in the byrds and crosby, stills, nash, and young.hillman is just so multi-talented at everything he does!
@bughead3 I always tell people who like the Byrds to look and see who wrote all the best Byrds songs...Gene Clark was a really great songwriter and singer. Set You Free This Time; Feel A Whole Lot Better...and then after the Byrds, She Darked the Sun; Polly Come Home; Through the Morning, Through the Night, etc, etc, etc...great, great stuff.
I've been a gene clark fan since 1965 and the first byrds album and singles were issued. one of the very best singer/songwriters ever. he sings other peoples music with just as much conviction also. john fogerty should be proud here.
Genes vocal range and knack for singing a solid melody made harmony fun I bet, and carla does great...Im not familiar with Carla Olsen...what is her history???/
@ClubViking63 I googled her, shes down quite a lot with several people..I certainly like what she did with gene.....there's a sense of earthiness , a reality that shes really a musician instead of a singer, ya know?
@MrBruceBarham Carla is a true singer & has been around the block for over 30 years........dating back to the 70's. has played in venue's throughout her career, a laid back performerm but a solid person and true singer to say the least
@McGarVision Don't be so sure. A lot of these bands don't even look at youtube. And even to the extent that they do, I think they are more apt to look at video clips their own material.
Beautiful & sweet take of this great song. I lost my "So Rebellious a Lover" years ago, and miss this one and the rest of the cuts, like Gene's version of "Hot Burrito #2". In a perfect world this song is better known. Also, in the same world, Gene Clark is more popular and highly regarded than Kenny Chesney! Country Rock Forever!
I like this, beofe ilost everything to a fire, my fav album was Gene with the dillards, songs were great, both albums, nice to hear this , never heard of the gal,,glad we have youtube
All of Gene's recordings with Doug Dillard are available on a single cd which is actually very inexpensive. "So Rebelious A Lover" has been recently rereleased on CD as well. Both are nicely done and well worth it.
The look he shoots her at 1:46, when she gets the words right that he botched earlier(let the music have it's day), is priceless! But who cares about perfection? This is soulful stuff.
This is more folk than country, very good cover. John Fogerty's live version is my favorite. Gene was the best songwriter in the Byrds, too bad they could not keep it together longer.
I have been listening to this performance and actually like it far better than John Fogarty's, and Fogarty wrote the song! Shows you what a great song can do. Kudos to John and Gene is missed so badly.
"Dillard and Clark" seamlessly blended bluegrass, country and rock and was done in 1969, a full 10 years before JD Crowe and the New South gained great acclaim (and hatred)for doing the same thing. Just listen to their rendition of "Crying Holy". This is a lovely country themed rendition of Fogarty's great rock a billy tune.
@ShockDoc before listening to this version i thought like you but now i think gene shows so much talent that even if its very simple its the greatest.
Gene Clark was a founding father of "folk rock" as a key member of The Byrds and their best songwriter. After the Byrds, he also influenced the birth of country-rock through his work with country roots artists Dillard & Clark. In the latter part of his career, he teamed briefly with Carla Olson--formerly of The Textones-- for a brilliant album called "So Rebellious a Lover" The song performed on this video appeared on that album....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The record was released in 1987, so this should have been sometime in 1987 to 1989 I would guess. Clark died of alcohol-related problems in 1991. Carla Olson was quoted as saying "The really talented people have no sense at all".
A Major League baseball scout, Jay Camel enlightened me on the genius of Gene Clark in the early 90's. Among the many brilliant tapes he sent me were a half a dozen tunes of Clark's duet with the beautiful Carla Olson. How special it is to see these videos of them!! Thanks so much for posting and thank you Mr. Camel....wherever you may be 'bird-doggin'" these days, buddy!!!

If you watch the John Fogarty version of this song (that he wrote)it appears that he sings it the same as Gene Clark.
Aleksandar417 3 years ago
Gene was at his best when he had someone to work off imo-with the Byrds, with Doug Dillard, the Gosdin Brothers and here with Carla Olsen.
The album this is off of is brilliant but around the same time he released a solo effort called 'Firebyrd' that was pretty woeful.
