He's married now to his first wife. I don't care what this song is about, I'm pissed off that people put the name of America on and kill people half way around the world for holy ideas like Freedom and Liberty when it's really just snakes trying to kill.
who cares, they are all hard as hell to sing, and very few can actually do a good job at singing his stuff. just enjoy the music and stop fighting. SoundGarden rocks!!!!!!
@hottopichouseeatit10 I'm not sure that it's about a person per se. It's about a bitch. Like when he says follow me to the desert . . .and drink the waters below her head. He says take the bait and eat the fruit. The bitch is probably Eve from the biblical story Adam and Eve who made us to fall. "Far out and far away the wooden stake this thing has got me on." Eve caused man to fall and Christ had to hang on the cross to redeem us. "I don't like what you got me hangin' from."
@1776bricks Alls I know about Christ dying for my sins is since someone died for my sins, I'm allowed to sin more and kill people in other countries for Jesus. Or that since George Washington fought for freedom, we should spend money and time and lives on killing for this man Washington who was raised from the dead so that people could die so that a god of war can eat their fruit.
Wow...it's like when Brian Johnson from AC/DC said:This is a song about a dirty women...and the song's called she's got the jack, you ready?Uhh yeahh!!!AC/DC AND SOUNDGARDEN ARE THE BEST ROCK BANDS IN THE UNIVERSE
@Beckedorff lmao it sounds like neither of you have heard of soundgardens music, they had an entire catalogue of shit thats in a higher league than both those songs, beyond the wheel lol, thats what they all say, maybe youve heard of screaming life fopp, sg has 120 songs plus, i bet youve only heard a third, im no obsessive fan, the songs just happened to get better and better, even on the second lap..plus
@easyeasy007 you're wrong, I've heard all their songs, because i have a band and we played only Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog ... ok, I'm the drummer, but listening to Beyond the Wheel this seems the hardest song to sing of SG. And that's just my opinion dude, so relax and fuck you...
I must say that I just checked out the Stand Stills and its amazing how a two-person band can make that kind of sound. Renee the drummer seems very passionate and the lead vocalist Johnny Fox has one of those highly recognizable sounds to his voice, like a Cris Cornel or Jimmy Olsen.
My fav vocalists (Cobain, Cornell, Staley) are hardly pitch perfect singers but it is the SOUL, the passion and pain and EMOTION that captivates you. LONG LIVE GRUNGE!
It was based on talent. Cornell is unbelievably talented on record. but live he is out of tune constantly. You are right, early Soundgarden he sounds better, but I still think he is overrated. I mean I haven't seen one video of him where he sounds as good live as he does on a record and it makes me wonder, how many takes does he have to do in a studio? And, if you can't re-create that sound live, then how good are you?
1) in Soundgarden, on recordings he's not playing guitar while he's singing, it's near impossible for him to recreate his studio sound live while doubling on guitar
btw, i know elvis, mccartney and sometimes vedder play guitar live, but their vocal sounds are/were much easier to recreate live even with a guitar. however, i dont disagree with your other choices of singers, very good. but cornell should also be there lol
very good point, it is harder to sing while playing guitar, but he doesn't play guitar in Audioslave, and the live from Cuba dvd sounds terrible compared to his voice on audioslave's albums. I forgot someone on my list. Steven Tyler. He can blow Cornell off the stage any night and he is like 20 years older!
why do people think Cornell is one of the best rock singers of all time? He sounds good on album but everytime i hear him live he sounds like someone is choking a cat. I can name 10 singers better than him right off the top of my head
Those are all great singers but i'm guessing you based your decision more on the popularity of them instead of talent. Plus this a shitty recording of Chris, look around for some pro-shot of him in early soundgarden.

Uhh excuse me, Paul Mccartney has one of the best voices in history, I think many will agree that Cornell can't touch Paul as a singer or a musician. He has pipes, listen to the Let It Be album
I agree Paul McCartney shouldn't be on the list with Grunge but You can't say that Cornell wipes the floor with McCartney because first of all... The Beatles brought rock n roll to America with the British Invasion.. sure there was rock here without them but some of the biggest bands out there are British.. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Of course The Beatles, The Who and the list goes on.. and 2nd why he shouldn't be on the list with the others is because not even the same Genre.. Long Live Grunge!!
you are right about susan silver, but chris suffered from depression having lost his close friends Andy Wood(motherlove bone) & Layne Stanley(alice in chains). chris had also checked into rehab for substance abuse(meth and alcohol) you can hear references about the addiction throughout Superuknown and Down on the Upside. this song isn't about Susan Silver because they divorced after 2000and this album was released in 1996.

are u serious. SG is pretty much always better than PJ and Nirvana.....Chris has way more talent than both of them. They may have been better songwriters, but definately Chris was the best singer.
Too bad Chris has been getting too wasted for too long. Hard to keep up the good sh*t when you smoke and drink too much. I have to say his vocals on this piece are kinda messed up...unfortunately...cause I rly like the song a lot...

I havent been so blessed as to actually see Soundgarden live, inspite them being one of my favorite bands of all time. I saw Chris Cornell recently, he performed 'Spoonman', 'Fell on black days' and 'black hole sun' from the Soundgarden days,it was great, but nothing close to what it would be with a reunited Soundgarden, sigh

Your right. He's way out of key, doesn't have much energy, and he seems to be in a pretty bad mood.

Ya he definitely doesn't sound like he's in a good mood. It kind of seems like he just wants to get the show over with, lol
