@arcangellives@decemberschild1217 April 6, 2004, the City of New Orleans derailed near Flora, Mississippi, approximately 15 miles north of Jackson, while en route to Chicago, resulted in 1 death, Clara Downs, of Chicago, 3 serious injuries, and 43 minor injuries. A subsequent National Transportation Safety Board investigation determined that deterioration of the track due to poor maintenance caused the accident - During fiscal year 2011, the City of New Orleans carried over 230,000 passengers.
Although Arlo wrote AND performed many great songs, this 1 was written by legendary Chicago folksinger-songwriter Steve Goodman who also wrote and recorded A Dying Cubs Fan's Lament when he was terminally ill.
@WytZox1 As I recall he actually talks about first hearing the song from Steve on the album Arlo (which I REALLY need to find on something that isn't an 8-Track ;-) )
Awsome, this should of been the rallying cry for support of New Orleans after Katrina. It makes you think of the tragedy and how important the city is to America. The "Good Morning America America how are ya", part is fitting and it's ashamed that the tragedy seemed to unfold with most forsaking our "native son" town of New Orleans.
If you get a chance to see movie "Alices restaurant" it is quite marvelous--Arlo is great, somewhat rambling but ver entertaining--just thot Id recommend

@warren3427 well Arlo Guthrie read Ron Paul's last book "End The Fed"! The backcover reads "Rarely has a single book not only challenged, but decisively changed my mind." - Arlo Guthrie
Real quote from Arlo: "I became a registered Republican about five or six years ago because to have a successful democracy you have to have at least two parties, and one of them was failing miserably.
We had enough good Democrats.
We needed a few more good Republicans. We needed a loyal opposition."
We have plenty of loyal American Democrats.

Ron Paul,. Anne Raynn "Atas shrugged" b.s. A ship of fools headed over the water falls. The only good libertarian is one that doesnt drive on the government made highway system.
@phixxxer11 And after government subsidies have made Wal-Mart the only store in town, then the libertarians are hypocrites because they'd rather shop there than starve to death.
@phixxxer11 At the Philadelphia Folk Festival, it seems his politics have drastically changed. Between all songs, he made pro-union statements(and sang a couple pro-union songs) in regards to Wisconsin and other unions getting beaten up. This especially appealed to me since I'm one of the Verizon technicians that was on strike. I'll definitely forgive him for his past.
This song means a lot to me as in 1981 my father gave me a 30 day excursion trip on Amtrak and one of the trains I took was called The City of New Orleans. It went between Chicago and New Orleans and I went there. It was my first time in New Orleans and now I want to get htere again during Marde Graus.
I saw Arlo twice back in the 90's. If you have a chance to see him you must. It is a glimpse of folk music Americana style. His style his so unique. He keeps you mesmerized with his playing and story telling and the humor is never ending. Alice's Restaurant is an experience all by its self. There is a connection he has with the audience that is genuine. I was in awe knowing his dad was a folk legend before him and he mastered his own unique style which is squeezing folk out of the 60's!
One of my all time favorite songs. I can still remember the first time I heard it and wearing the grooves out on the vinyl listening to it time and time again.
I may hve been born in the late 80's but i feel like i was born in the 40's and lived my 20's in the 60s! if that makes sense :) then i would be alive when they were all playing there wonderful music instead of the crap we have now adays!!!!!! i still listen to 60's and 70's and i love it !!!!
Republicans arent fit to lick woody's dusty boots out law the republican party(tea party) and bring george w bush on criminal charges for an illegal war!
@phixxxer11 Being registered one way does not necessarily mean voting that way. He could just want to vote in the Republican primaries to influence the party's choice of candidates, and you have to registered to vote for the party.
@HalfBornUnicornFetus So your type of Republican has abandoned their Republican views to support the Wisconsin teachers' union and make pro-union statements at all of his performances?? That's my type of Republican, too! :)
@phixxxer11 : On Jul 26, Arlo returned from Europe and immediately went to Madison, WI to do a fund-raiser for the unions at The Barrymore Theater. He sang a few songs with the crowds gathered at the capitol building.
@phixxxer11 He's a Ron Paul supporter. He has no use for foreign policy interventionism, paper currency, central banks, drug war, the force of the welfare state, centralization of power in the national government, among other things.
He wrote a blurb for Paul's books End the Fed. Interestingly, Vince Vaughn introduced Paul the other day out in California. Not all of entertainment is full of statist drones :)
@joepeeler34 Ron paul is an old fool and theres nothing worse than an old fool means he's learned nothing. Joes a younger fool so there s hope for him and vince vaughn? please He's as big as he is dumb.
@phixxxer11 I don't see the point of personal attacks. Perhaps the people who support liberty just have a far deeper understanding of economics, history, philosophy, civil society, and the proper role of government.
From what I have read, Mr. Vaughn reads voraciously. He's not reading pulp fiction either.
Also, Dr. Paul predicted the weakness in the dollar, the collapse of large banks, Freddie/Fannie, and the housing bubble collapse 6-years before it happened. Did you do the same?
I love this song. In this recording, Arlo sounds different, more like Dylan, which I don't really care for (just my opinion). It's a wonderful train sound and I loved Arlo's original recording.
according to Wikipedia, Steve Goodman wrote this song while travelling on Amtrak from Chicago to New Orleans and he performed this song to Arlo Guthrie who agreed to put it in his repertoire of songs and Arlo recorded the song in 1972.
Johnny Cash cover came out in 1973 and Willie Nelson's version in 1984 but Arlo is most associated with this song
@PaulMax1957 Arlo said the way it happened, was after a little gig in '70,This "dude" asked him to listen to a song he wrote. Arlo said "i hate songs! Mostly mine!!" bein the jokester he is.So he said ok-you buy me a beer and i will listen to it.Arlo said it was the best beer he ever had and they became friends and Arlo recorded it in '72. Goodman was diagnosed w/Leaukimea at 20--died in'84. R.I.P.Stevie!! Thank you Arlo for bringing his song to AMERICA!
Back when songs still had a meaning... I'm 16, and I grew up with this stuff, because my Mom has a CD with all those songs, and when we were kids, we kept listening to it over and over again. I hate today's mainstream music.
Yeah, it was a great time, if you could just ignore that feeling you got every time you checked your mail and thought how this could be the day you're told to report for duty in Viet Nam.
I have grown up listening to this genre of music, Un like some I am a music lover, and believe it's one of the most important legacy's we can pass on to our children, no matter what the era, it all tells a story of us,
through the ages, whether you like the music or not.
I rode a train that ran from Chicago to my home in Peoria. This song always reminds me of some of the things I saw on my journey. It wasn't just the train that went away but it was our whole society that changed.
Amost everybody recognizes the quality and greatness of this song.
Written, and also sung, by Steve Goodman ( R.I.P.). Made an international hit by Arlo Guthrie. Willie's version is also very nice. But my favourite rendition is done as a duet by John Prine and ( I think ) Rodney Crowell. Hope it's uploaded to YT. If so, treat yourself. And if anyone knows where get their recording of TCONO please let me know.
One thing I like about this guy recently: he's doing his hits at least the same speed as the originals. I often wonder about the slowed-down speed of the live recordings from the 60s and 70s; did he think he had to slow down so people singing along could keep up? I sang harmonies to his radio hits so much I could sing them in my sleep... Arlo was AMAZING at Clearwater this year. He's a great guitarist, a great entertainer and a national treasure. Happy Thanksgiving, y'all... ;)
This is awesome. I live in Chicago, and in August I am going to New Orleans for my birthday, and watching this has basically sealed the deal, I just bought my ticket from Amtrak, one way, to New Orleans, all 19 hours of it . . .I'm sure there will be some very cool scenery along the way . . .I was gonna fly there, but, watching this has altered my plans, I will fly back to Chicago, but take the City of New Orleans there, should be a cool trip . . .
@pkotowski If you get a cabin you will be MUCH better off. I found out the hard way.I went from Boston to Jacksonville. Yeah its extra money but its worth it. Have a good time either way.
Guthrie really puts a "Dylan spin" on this version with his phrasing. I like it, but like his original '72 version better, and also Goodman's(writer), Nelson & Cash's versions. Great, great modern folk song.
Just stumbled across this and realized I was at this concert. A great time I still remember. Great Southeast Music Hall. About as big as my kitchen. Sat on cushions on the floor with plywood backs across the rows. Draft beer in little buckets (and I was underage). What a blast from the past. What a tremendous talent. He brought the house down..

@Chiefjohncrow Willie also did a good cover, because he had Mickey to play harp. But remember that the original was Steve Goodman who generally performed it with just an acoustic guitar, taking a back seat to no one.
New track construction is (or was in 2004) $1,000,000 a mile. Hopefully, everyone that thought tearing up track in the last few decades have regained their sanity & this wonderful mode of transportation will flourish again.
I love music. I don't care what the copyright date is on the record. About the only thing I don't like is pop country. What boggles my mind is why on every comment page there is always someone showing their ass and cursing and putting down the video and the poeple that watched it. I cuss like a sailor, but I also put the words where they're most effective. You won't change someones opinion by insulting them or the music. Go watch the stuff you like, or shut up and learn something.
im 18, and if i could go back in time i would take my bus and go straight to woodstock. if i had the choice to live in 2011 or 1960s-70s. easily id pick the 60s-70s. pink floyd and arlo and all those artists kick the asses of all those non talented, mainstream, sellout artists of today.
I agree in one way with you, the music was sooooo much better then than now. But the 70's were pretty shit, 3-4 days weeks, power strikes, Winter of Discontent; then again, today isn't much better!!! :)
@richtogo no cuz u still have all the great old stuff but now u can get greta new stuff not sayin theres not a lot of crap but the good is still out there
@VeeDubBus73 It's all right. You'll see that this stuff is not then nor now. It's timeless because it speaks to reality, never some trend. This ideal was shunted just as well as well as any now are. But it does not change. It's the face of compassion and talent throughout.
@VeeDubBus73 I grew up during the 60's and 70's. We didn't know we were part of history. We took the good tunes for granted, but now we look back fondly. Best music ever! Good for you for enjoying this stuff, it's the best!
Talent is just a concept, mainstream does not equal low quality (Pink Floyd was and is mainstream, by the way), and almost every band/artist has sold out at one point (some in worse ways than others).
@VeeDubBus73 kris kristofferson also echoed such sentiment in this one liner "Well, I'll trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday" - Me and Bobby Mcgee.
Been coast to coast and top to bottom on trains. Daddy was a mgr. for Fruit Grower Experss so i rode for free. Good times, great memories . You had to change train stations going West thru New Orleans.
@dennyshonda - Hello. I spent every summer for over a decade riding the rails, especially the Atchison-Topeka & Santa Fe Superchief. We children often "took over" the top part of the observation dome, playing assorted games, having the times of our lives. Aren't we all glad that trains have Not disappeared. Such great memories. Steve Goodman has captured the feeling perfectly here. Arlo G. sings it perfectly, also. THANKS TO BOTH. PEACE TO ALL!
@mjcamck71 My grandfather worked on the Southern Pacific for forty years. He was a roustabout. He would throw bums off the train, and bring home cartons of stuff that fell of the train. Trains built this country. And Arlo and his dad are part of our history. Like what is left of our train system. Peace to you too.......
Trains were a symbol of America’s industrial strength at one time. They represented freedom and helped bring the nation together. Now, they’re something for the disenfranchised to graffiti and for the Government to subsidize. What a loss. What a shame.
@xshorty852456x - Hello. Yes, it's great that trains are making a comeback both passenger & cargo, a silver lining in the high-cost-of-oil situation. Best Wishes To You.
Can't begin to tell ya how much joy it brings to me to hear this song again!! Thanks!!

@paragtime Arlo is a libertarian. He's a big supporter of Ron Paul.
joepeeler34 5 months ago
@phixxxer11 He's a Ron Paul supporter. He has no use for foreign policy interventionism, paper currency, central banks, drug war, the force of the welfare state, centralization of power in the national government, among other things.
He wrote a blurb for Paul's books End the Fed. Interestingly, Vince Vaughn introduced Paul the other day out in California. Not all of entertainment is full of statist drones :)
joepeeler34 5 months ago
@joepeeler34 Ron paul is an old fool and theres nothing worse than an old fool means he's learned nothing. Joes a younger fool so there s hope for him and vince vaughn? please He's as big as he is dumb.
phixxxer11 5 months ago
@phixxxer11 I don't see the point of personal attacks. Perhaps the people who support liberty just have a far deeper understanding of economics, history, philosophy, civil society, and the proper role of government.
From what I have read, Mr. Vaughn reads voraciously. He's not reading pulp fiction either.
Also, Dr. Paul predicted the weakness in the dollar, the collapse of large banks, Freddie/Fannie, and the housing bubble collapse 6-years before it happened. Did you do the same?
joepeeler34 5 months ago
@joepeeler34 I think it is very funny.Talking politics while listening to the music of that time. You just don't get it yet.
phoenixatcom 5 months ago
@phoenixatcom I think it is "very funny" that you thought I was typing while listening to music. I commented after the song was over.
Paul isn't about politics by the way. He is about ideas. That's why Arlo supports him :)
joepeeler34 5 months ago
@phixxxer11 SO sorry jerk. He grew up & wised up. He even sings songs supporting our troops nowadays. How 'gross' huh?? LMAO!

@phixxxer11 Way, way far away from being your modern day standard issue Republican. Check out arlo.net and his wikipedia page.

I love this song. In this recording, Arlo sounds different, more like Dylan, which I don't really care for (just my opinion). It's a wonderful train sound and I loved Arlo's original recording.
mopbrothers 7 months ago
according to Wikipedia, Steve Goodman wrote this song while travelling on Amtrak from Chicago to New Orleans and he performed this song to Arlo Guthrie who agreed to put it in his repertoire of songs and Arlo recorded the song in 1972.
Johnny Cash cover came out in 1973 and Willie Nelson's version in 1984 but Arlo is most associated with this song
PaulMax1957 7 months ago
@PaulMax1957 Arlo said the way it happened, was after a little gig in '70,This "dude" asked him to listen to a song he wrote. Arlo said "i hate songs! Mostly mine!!" bein the jokester he is.So he said ok-you buy me a beer and i will listen to it.Arlo said it was the best beer he ever had and they became friends and Arlo recorded it in '72. Goodman was diagnosed w/Leaukimea at 20--died in'84. R.I.P.Stevie!! Thank you Arlo for bringing his song to AMERICA!
TheZayne34 7 months ago
Goodman was a genius. The song has the natural railroad sound built in. And Arlo knows how to exploit and enhance it. PURE Genius for both of them!

Arlo's website says he never had a "hit song"...
... Exactly what do you call this? They'll be playing this song hundreds of year from now.

Back when songs still had a meaning... I'm 16, and I grew up with this stuff, because my Mom has a CD with all those songs, and when we were kids, we kept listening to it over and over again. I hate today's mainstream music.

It wasn't just the train that went away but it was our whole society that changed.
nymanjohn 8 months ago
Amost everybody recognizes the quality and greatness of this song.
Written, and also sung, by Steve Goodman ( R.I.P.). Made an international hit by Arlo Guthrie. Willie's version is also very nice. But my favourite rendition is done as a duet by John Prine and ( I think ) Rodney Crowell. Hope it's uploaded to YT. If so, treat yourself. And if anyone knows where get their recording of TCONO please let me know.
Thanks - Joe

One thing I like about this guy recently: he's doing his hits at least the same speed as the originals. I often wonder about the slowed-down speed of the live recordings from the 60s and 70s; did he think he had to slow down so people singing along could keep up? I sang harmonies to his radio hits so much I could sing them in my sleep... Arlo was AMAZING at Clearwater this year. He's a great guitarist, a great entertainer and a national treasure. Happy Thanksgiving, y'all... ;)

This is awesome. I live in Chicago, and in August I am going to New Orleans for my birthday, and watching this has basically sealed the deal, I just bought my ticket from Amtrak, one way, to New Orleans, all 19 hours of it . . .I'm sure there will be some very cool scenery along the way . . .I was gonna fly there, but, watching this has altered my plans, I will fly back to Chicago, but take the City of New Orleans there, should be a cool trip . . .

Guthrie really puts a "Dylan spin" on this version with his phrasing. I like it, but like his original '72 version better, and also Goodman's(writer), Nelson & Cash's versions. Great, great modern folk song.
ALFV8 9 months ago
@ALFV8 Could be that Dylan got his spin from Arlo's father Woody. Woody Guthrie was Dylan's inspiration.

Always figgered' Jerry Jeff Walker did a better job covering this tune than Arlo did the original..all due respect to the writer.
Chiefjohncrow 10 months ago
