This, and most other organ clips on youtube, should be about the music. Complaints about the camera lingering too long here or there are a waste of time. As for some other things? 440 is a recent standard, set long after this organ was built. Deal with it! 435 organs are far more common in Europe, and that's just fine. Tempo? Quite reasonable. It's not supposed to be a race, and playing faster in a reverberant environment just makes things muddy. In all, this is a pretty good job.
The best recording I've heard of this is Jorge Sanchez's recording. However, this isn't bad, and at least has integrity. Lots of organists screw around with the rhythm of this piece too much.
If the goal is to show the playing of the organ, then the video production crew failed. For instance, how can someone not familiar with this piece know that there's a pedal solo from 0:54 to 2:02? The camera never shows that he's playing only with his feet. It's as if they did their best to avoid showing his hands and feet at the same time during the pedal solo, and they don't show the best pedal work. They seem to greatly prefer showing the organ façade and Stamm's face.
@ccoraxfan God you're so right! I thought absolutely the same watching the video. Especially the beginning of the pedal solo! This is an important part. In that moment the camera shows the facade! Everybody not familiar thinks he conintues playing with his hands until the camera returns at a totally inappropriate moment.
That could be done much better. And yes, how important is it to show the face that long???
It's the beginning of the next piece! This is the toccata, the last minute at the end is the adagio, which is awesome btw, check it out in the channel!
Very nice. Can someone ask Hans Andre Stamm to play and record Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor BWV 582 and Toccata and Fugue in F major BWV 540 for us please? ;)
Very nice rendition of one of my favorites. This is tremendous fun to play. When I was young and studying pipe organ my nickname for this one was "Bach goes crazy". The toccata really kicks on this one.

I wish 440 was the standard world wide other than just the United States. I have perfect pitch and it's aggravating to listen to music that is written in a specific key that sounds almost a whole step sharp or flat because the wave frequency is larger or smaller than 440 vibrations per second. This piece is also way too slow for my taste.
Wtf, you do know who is playing this don't you? The Organist of York Minster, one of the finest organists in the UK. Mind you he is nowhere near as good an organist as Colin Walsh!
These parameters as the pitch and the Tempo are absolutely subjetive and conventional. I never ask what pich has an organ so beatifull, I never ask for the Tempo on a goode playing: I hear, only. ¡If I change the pitch of an organ of 45 stops, I am changing its voice also!
@organmaster1969 Some people don't like Bach or other Baroque composers to be played at 440. I have perfect pitch too and at the beggining it bothers a little, but is not that difficult to educate the ear to difference.
The tempo is ok, if it were too fast, it wouldnt be Bach.
@VONHIMMELBACH get used to it. Transposition was very common in the baroque era. You could have heard this piece in D major in one occasion and E major on another. (or Eb Major and and F major in your case). Would you still find it annoying? All are common keys. What about an unfamiliar piece in B minor? You'd simply hear C minor. Keys are just a system employed in music notation. Pitch is not set in stone. Standard pitch varied from region to region, and even between church and court, etc
@PraeludiumUndFuge :) I transpose all the time swetheart. Stop arguing, enjoy it! If people disagree with you, why make them feel like they're in "the wrong place"? I can say I love this piece, and someone else can say they hate it. Is Bach gonna come back from his grave to say: Oh how dare you? Come on,
When you hear this piece played all the time in C major and then you hear another one in C# major, you kind of feel the difference, but is not that my ears are going to blow up. Relax
I'm don't have perfect pitch, but correct me if I'm wrong, this isn't using even temprement either. Some of those mixtures sound a little strange. Nice though
@organmaster1969 Sorry, but this is bullshit, completly. I am very sorry, that past times musicians and instrumentbuilders dit not recognice your "perfect" pitch. You maybe should not think to much about european culture...
I don't play the organ, but I have great respect for the instrument and the people who play it. With what other instruments can you make a melodic line with your FEET? This video is GREAT...thanks for posting! :)
What other instrument can you walk inside, and what other instrument makes so many tones, what other instrument can be so loud, and is there many other instrument that when people hear it live, makes them all go WOW!.
Well, for one thing, there's the really rare Clavicembalo con Pedale, whose name says what it is: Harpsichord with Pedals. These aren't piano pedals, but allow the harpsichord to be quasi organesque so to speak. I've made an adaptation of Bach's C Minor Passacaglia and Fugue for it, and it sounds AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus, there's the Carillon as well. What do you say to these two, or were you just being rhetorical?
This has always been my favorite piece

I think this a rather suitable tempo. Too fast, and the notes will be blured and it leaves no space for expression.

440 is the worldwide standard, it's just 465 was the standard for organs in Baroque Germany.
