He was awarded the "Prince of Asturias Award"by the prince of Asturias himself and the queen of the Kingdom of Spain' on October 20011, that is the biguess award given by that country to talented poets, writers and other luminaries!!!
That verse is the best-- it is what makes the song so powerful, such a summing up of human life-- even more than "it's a cold and it's a broken halleluia"--- it is that "I'll stand before the Lord of Song, with nothing on my tongue but halleluia" which makes it a prayer, an anthem, a whole cry from the whole human heart. It is good that he recited that verse for the audience for this award. God bless you Leonard!
Oh my God...wen he recited that verse of Hallelujah, i broke down in tears...this song has such a deeper meaning than we could possibly understand...thank you Mr. Cohen for blessing this world with this timeless song...
" I did my best - it wasn't much. I couldn't feel so I learned to touch. I've told the truth - I didn't come to fool you. And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the lord of song with nothing on my tongue, but Hallelujah." ~ Leonard Cohen
I first heard of Leonard Cohen when they used his sing "Im Your Man" in the movie Secretary. Ever since then ive been a huge fan. All you people that say Jeff Buckley or anyone elses version of hallelujah is the best one obviously havent heard K.D. Langs version sung at the 2005 Juno Awards in Winnepeg. She sang it with every ounce of emotion in her and her voice soared to the Heavens when she sang it ... Hallelujah!...... and that version is right over there>>>>> :)
I heard Leonard Cohen for the first time on the Pump Up The Volume soundtrack. They play his song in the movie, but when I bought the soundtrack it was a Concrete Blond cover, Everybody Knows. I was so disapointed. It took me FOREVER to find real Leonard Cohen music, in the early 90's it was easier to find covers of his stuff. Now his music is part of my soundtrack. No one sounds like him. And no one else could write such haunting and perfect lyrics. I LOVE him forever.
@raeraetippy That is EXACTLY what happened with me! I remember being introduced to Leonard Cohen in a movie theater, the volume fully pumped on those huge speakers in the dark, and just leaning forward, fucking amazed. Same sad disappointment with the soundtrack, where, even in 1990 I was ignorant enough to think that Leonard was part of a band I didn't know by name at the time--Concrete Blonde. Then I found glory: 1988's 'I'm Your Man' album and everything since, and before. Awesome.
@hardkmel And yet several artists who covered the song were mentioned, no? And anyone can see that Buckley's cover was the best, most famous, most influential, etc of all of them. Respect to Cohen and all that, but I think Jeff should have at least been mentioned.
@GlenMuse795 really the most influential version is john cale's, seeing as that's the version that everyone else covers. and the most famous is surely rufus wainwright's, since his version for the movie "shrek" is how most people found this song.
Cohen's music has always been an affirmation for me that the seat of our soul, if it can ever be personified, would be in our legacy of music and song. Many have given expression to all the goodness in the world through word and deed. Cohen's music reminds me of that legacy.... A great musician and a good man.
i could listen to this man all day & all night whether it be him singing, reading poetry or reading out the entries in the local telephone directory :) beautiful man, beautiful artist & beautiful soul <3
This song is one of my all time favorites....Cohen is a Jewish man who boldly expresses his love and adoration to the "Lord of Song" in Hallelujah. God who is the Giver of all good gifts is pleased as His children sing this great hymn of the century. Thank You Leonard Cohen
when listening to Leonard's own lyrics quote, i watched kd lang's deeply touched by what she heard, though she must've read them so many times before. this is her fragile heart that shows in all of her life PATH, in all her DOINGS. God bless Cohen, God bless kd lang, God bless us ALL!
Leonard Cohen should have been in the "song writers' hall of fame" before most people involved in his video were born. It's fine to be honoured, but they left it a bit late didn't they?
@furrcola ..you left out the obvious... Happy Birthday . Seriously, I am sure that by "popular" , martbook meant "covered". The only ones that I can think of that have been covered more often are: Yesterday, White Christmas and My Way.
Oh and bty, I sincerely doubt that Redemption Song belongs on your list. I mean, who, outside of reggae fans have really heard it much.
@mab06 Sometimes true taste and talent isn't appreciated in its time, but I'm so thankful Leonard has received larger recognition during his later years! He's been my musical joy since 1974, I thank the late William Edward Compton for introducing me to his music on Phoenix radio!! RIP Bill Compton.
Thanks for sharing and think it was great to see Leonard honored and big fan of them all really. i prefer k.d.'s version of this song but the what a writer of poetic songs he is.
Thanks for a really wonderful video. An important correction, though: Judy Collins did NOT write "Suzanne" with Leonard Cohen, as the narrator claims. She was the first person to record it, but it had already been written by Leonard Cohen when she did so.Collins tells the story in the video, and it doesn't include her being part of the writing process.
this is awesome my choior class preformed this song my solo was: baby ive been here before i know this room and ive walked this floor i used to live alone before i knew you ive seen your flag on the marble arch love is not a victory march its a cold and its a broken hallelujah
