  • I dont see how "sword shops" can stay in business... with the exception of utility knives, what (pray tell) can you actually use for its designated purpose?

  • @Forthepaycheck88 Mostly it's for recreation, cutting up bottles, etc. Some buy them as self-defense weapons (strange, I know, but they have been used for that recently in home invasions). And a lot of sword shops also sell things like machetes or folding knives, which are utility items that many people use.

  • @ToothpickMcBrainy Idk, man. Sounds like a whole lotta "maybe". Even if you happen to be rather well-trained with a sword, its hard to justify hackin someones head off in "self defense". Im right there with ya, though. I long for a world where someone wrongs you, they are one Iai cut from gazin up at the underside of their balls. Unfortunately, we dont live in feudal japan, or a lush jungle, and while i might need to cut a rope here and there, its not enuff to keep stores open

  • @Forthepaycheck88 And yet the stores exist. Clearly, your analysis is incomplete.

  • 0:49 he wasnt expecting the tatami to fight back.

  • oh yes you wanna see me sword collection to proof im a 40yr old VIRGIN

  • @duece956 1- this is publicity

2- he has a sword shop.

3- he gets more money than you.

  • I'm assuming you're testing right out of the box, the blood reign's probably not a bad sword, I'm guessing it just has a factory edge still.

  • "Your stance was offff omfg u suck lol. watch me im the best, mang. forreal."

Bitch, you watch way too much anime.

  • @swordbuyersGuide. Thank you very much for these videos. As a Kendo practitioner after several years have begun to think about the purchase of a real katana to practice tameshigari to see if my technique is developling properly. Your video are invaluable, not to mention fascinating Keep up the good work!

  • Your cutting to high? Unless your getting ready for when the Lakers break into your house, I'd suggest aiming a little lower, haha. I did the same thing for a while too though, so I suppose I don't have much room to talk.

  • @nagohsemaj He is doing it well.

  • What do you think about Han Wei swords particularly "katanas " ?

  • fail

  • hey i need your help picking out a katana, do you have an email?

    :)

  • I've seen guys cut those rolls with a blunt european sword.

  • Um... isn't this more a failure of sharpening than the quality of the sword? I can probably sharpen a cheap carbon steel machete for like.. $10 that would cut through that just fine.

  • It would help a little if you knew what you were doin too

  • Are those bamboo things expensive

  • did you sharpen them at all?? are they full tang? if a spelt it correct

  • @soldier4God01 If he sharpened them, it wouldn't be an accurate review. They have to have been straight out the box or it would be a biased demonstration. Also yes you spelled tang correctly but you spelled spelled wrong.

  • @soldier4God01 They have a review on their website

  • did you sharpen the sords before using them?

  • did you sharpen the sword before using it

  • all you do is prove that the real skill comes from the swordsman and not the sword.

  • @TheMasterTonberry They quality of the sword has something to do with it :D

  • looks to me all hes trying to do is show that you don't need proper technique to make a sword cut if its well made enough. as far as i can tell, sure his technique may not be perfect form, but at least hes not whacking it in rapid succession. in the right hands the wind dragon would be plenty deadly.

  • lacks the power

  • How did u guys get on the subject of what weapons best to take down a near this a sword review video not let's see which weapon will stop a bear u guys are remedial quite off topic.

  • You might try holding the sword properly, stand properly [don't HOP UP when you cut] and swing it balanced.

Always try to cut straight, don't change the course while swinging and keep your shoulders down, too. ;o Remember that katanas were made for cutting, so you have to move them like you want to cut , not like you play baseball. :)

  • fuckin bad technique

  • a tameshigiri mat was designed to replicate the density of skin and bone. so if he can cut it even with that fucking HORRIBLE technique, then that lets you know how sharp the blade is. price doesn't matter.

  • lol your not even holding the freaking sword right your just cuting like a madman

  • Comment removed

  • the way you use the sword can make a difference

  • his form is excellent. It just doens't show it in here. the Shogun musashi sword is more of a stabber than a slashing-like sword like most katanas. The wind katana is really great. i wish i had it.

  • I'm looking for something to carry in the woods while I mushroom hunt! I see that you test lots of swords.. I want something that isn't going to fall apart if I have a run in with a bear!! I don't want to spend a ton on one, but if it falls apart.. thats no good... What's the bottom line on these?? I can sharpen a blade... that's not a problem...

  • well considering you might gore the bear even with a nice blade, one swipe of it's claw after you hit it and you'll be a fillet

  • A gun. If your worried about bears, get a gun. I bear has as much reach as a man with a sword, and his claws can gut you like a fish in a swipe.

So i'll say it again. GET A GUN. Swords are great, but if your wanting to protect yourself from a bear, get a hand gun or a rifle. It'll be cheaper, quicker more effective and you'll live through the encounter.

  • Eh... To be fair, unless you're sporting a 357 or something similar, a handgun won't help you alot against an aggressive bear :\

Probably as effective as a sword ;)

  • @Chudzhaal People constantly underestimate the power of a gun. If I put a whole clip into the bear with a .22 it'll feel it, If i hit it in the head and eyes, it'll go down or give up.

As it is, most guns people use for self defense are made to have high stopping power. Bear should go down for most of them.

And I've seen bears taken down with hand guns.

  • Hmm... But don't forget, bear's are pretty fast. If its charging you already, a .22 will enrage it unless you're really lucky.

I don't have alot of experience, but my great uncle used to hunt bears and deer, and he always sported a 357 magnum, said that was one's best bet on stopping an enraged bear. *Shrugs* But I'm not a gun expert, so I can't tell.

  • @Chudzhaal Yeah, those bears are faster than wolves and stronger, too. I frankly wouldn't hunt one unless I had a desert eagle in one hand and a decent sword in the other.

  • @Chudzhaal any gun shot to the head of a bear will kill it trust me seen it happen lots of times

  • to those ppl who commented negtively..u guys r fucking assholes. hav u read his youtube name? its swordbuyers guide hes just showing which swords are good dont hav to bitch on how he swings it. fools....

  • learn how to use then you get it : )

  • 1st one just needs some sharpening... not bad for the price... you could do better, but you could certainly do worse.

  • One does not swing a katana like a baseball bat. Poor technique. But still, a proper katana can still cut tatami with bad technique. Did I say he used poor technique? I meant AWFUL.

  • dude. wo gives a crap about how he swings a sword lol

  • To all wondering why "how he swings the sword" makes any difference.

Cutting with a sword is 90% technique, 10% blade sharpness. A slightly dull sword in the hands of an expert swordsman can still severe limbs. The cutting comes from the fluid motion, and precise blade alignment with the weight of the blade staying consistently along the path to be cut. This guy is just hacking at shit.

Either of these swords would be just fine if you consider their unused potential.

  • With this said, put a expensive sword with a novice vs a master with a less expensive sword any give time master with the dull sword would cut better if not cleaner than a novice with a expensive blade .

  • @esko23q Actually, with a decent sword, cutting that mat is as easy as cutting a grilled cheese sandwich with a butter knife, or so I've been told. True, technique still plays a huge part, but you'd rather go for a bat than a bad sword.

  • You do know that this guy sells the damn things for a living, right? He must have a hojillion Tameshigire videos on the net - in terms of raw experience I doubt anyone on the comments thread can touch him.

Can't speak as to his level of formal instruction, of course, but I imagine the man knows how to cut stuff up quite adequately.

  • @JadeFa1con13 its the sharpness that matters, id rather have a box cutter than a katana any day

  • made in china?

  • well u get what u paid for.

any high quality katana would have done the job from any angle with greater ez.

stil good results for the price though.

  • sowas nenne ich billige scheiße

  • lol

  • thats not how you use tatami. your sapose to have bamboo in the center to simulate bone. tatami alone only simulates flesh

  • your form is all wrong, and to begin, the tatami mat is way to high, Try lowering it so that you may cut it from top down,

  • Hes actually holding it correctly. Hes shifting the weight towards the front when he swings it. He holds it like a person who knows how to hold a katana.

  • niiice

  • were they factory/maker sharp or did you have to sharpen them? Just wondering

  • where did you find the wind dragon for sixty bucks? everywhere i find it its eighty.

  • lol

  • I am buying one my self so i would like to know does it come a part :) and how durable is it :) i need it to perform on stage :) tnx

  • HA HA HA XD

    Bloodrain FAIL!!

    LOL

  • i'm getting my Wind Dragon this week!

  • That tears it, I'm buying a Wind Dragon :]

  • jajajajaja he doesn't evenknow how to hold the katana, but agree, not all the cheap things suckz....

duby149, if you wanna use a katana, start with kendo, perhaps a year or two after, if your sensei finds that you are actually suitable for the katana he will move you to iaido so u can learn how to use a katana, because its really diferent from the shinai but ittl be a good start with kendo, hope you do it

  • Why would you start training with kendo if you want to use a katana? Kendo is a sport; it and kenjutsu (and iaido, for that matter) have completely different mindsets. Bad advice.

  • this proves that not all cheap swords suck. but it does have to do with tecnique as well. any way you put it, i like seeing stuff get sliced lol

  • i want to get a sword but i want to take some classes first do you think kendo is a good fighting style to start with ??? oH and i'm a big dude i was thinking of getting a long Katana to widen reach even more

  • duby149, if you wanna use a katana, start with kendo, perhaps a year or two after, if your sensei finds that you are actually suitable for the katana he will move you to iaido so u can learn how to use a katana, because its really diferent from the shinai but ittl be a good start with kendo, hope you do it, and well, a longer katana will be a nodachi sword, wich is another really diferent technique, all katanas are the same size not matter how big you are

  • assuming that the tang of a blade is decent.. doesn't its cutting ability based upon how sharp it is and how hard you swing? and therefore anything that is sharpened properly can cut through a tatamis? correct me if im wrong!

  • true, anything that is sharpened properly can cut tatami, but the question is...

how clean will the cut be?

and how much effort will it take to cut?

he probably could have cut it eventually with the first one but that's not the way the katana was designed to cut.

I hope that answers your question!

  • If you are trying to get more bang for your buck, buy a practical katana from hanwei. They are only slighly more expensive than $59 U.S.D, but are vastly superior. I nearly made it through 21 tatamis with it, vs. the 1 you made it through with the better of the two swords in this video.

  • That's an interesting uppercut type method... I believe it may have worked better if you didn't use the katana as a baseball bat...

  • I have a musashi katana and it cant even cut a water bottle, I payed like $50 for it...

  • Fifty bucks on the very, VERY cheap end for a katana.

  • It looks like this fellow is either self-taught or not trained in any japanese method. His cuts resemble what I've seen in European styles, but I could be wrong since I've never studied them myself.

In either case, a sword is a sword. European or Japanese technique will work equally well with either type of sword. He does an excellent job of testing the various pieces that are on the market.

  • is carbon steel a good blade material

  • jup its actually the only good material for cheap functional weapons. Don't buy stainless steel if its meant for cutting that is. If its a wallhanger or a knife fine but not for a sword.

  • go with one of the world war two ones if you dont want a katana that sucks

  • yeah watching homer simpson use a samuari sword makes me afraid that bubba thinks he is a ninja warrior.

The practice of Bushido should be left to those willing to dedicate thier life to the practice of the sword not Ralph Cramden.

  • learn how to cut without using such that power... don't use stregth.. use your mind..

  • Musashi swords are awesome swords for a low price

  • ha ha ha LOL

  • ROFL, with the way u set up that tatami mat, no wonder..... remake this vid with a better set up

  • hey, sword buyers guide,

i know you probably have alot of knowledge when it comes to this kind of stuff, but why don't you support the mat a little more. i mean, i know if i were fighting a person and cut him, he wouldn't be completely stiff but, that just seems too flexible. maybe that's what you're after though. just wondering

  • i knowfive gang thay all good to me.

  • wait a 59 buck katana cut through that easily I find that hard to believe since that sharp fake ones starts at around a hundred bucks.

  • Good on ya. Your comments certainly make you something of a cretin yourself bright boy.

  • I think the answer to this is self explanitory. Are you really such a cretin that you can't figure it out for yourself...

    Apparently so...

  • Are you so stupid that I need to repeat everything twice? Duh...!

  • @SwordBuyersGuide what the fuck is wrong with you is really what you do with your life?

  • @scar504 It's called FUN asshole!

  • @dirtyazza

Just a small question...can you speak fucking english?

  • @dirtyazza wow the dumbest person I have seen on youtube in 4 years

  • man f u get off his comment bar asshole

  • hey would any of u people here who are watchin this vid recomend the MUSASHI BAMBOO WARRIOR katana for the price of 80 dollars...?

  • go fuck yourself with a katana. Tell us all how it works out.

  • works well.

  • wow! that first sword was crappy.

  • ffs i need a tatami lol

  • "a tatami"

one isnt going to be enough plus you get a deal if you order big!

  • when u is go to buy a sword, is it like a gun where they is do checks and what not?

  • no you dont need any licence or check to buy katana. lol it's same if they would check your ''Knife Licence'' to buy normal knife to kitchen. I'm not comparing katanas to normal knifes, they're cool weapons and i have one.

  • you have a cool knife weapon?

  • were do u get all your swords from,u have some pretty sweet weponry!

  • your strokes with a katana look off, the bottom hand is responsible for most of the force and the top more a guide

  • hahahaha "once last chance.... Nevermind" hahaha is there any particular sword you recommend un the 50-200 dollar range? im looking to get one in a week :) please respond :)

  • Try the Wind Katana by Musashi or one of their other 'elite' line swords at the $159 price point. Best Katana under $200 by far. (there are several other full reviews on my site too - sword-buyers-guideDOTcom).

  • yeah i definately saw that review :) ive been looking on trueswords and i read like a bunch of reviews you have writen on your site haha my brother just suprised me with a bushido mc-3050 and it cuts very very nice. it cut through a thick plastic gatorade bottle like butter its awesome i dont know if you want to review it but that would be awesome :) i WAS going to get the wind kitana but its sold out :(

  • Yeah, that sword is to darned popular for its own good!

  • If you can not affort a Tamahagane blade buy one bainite katanam they are real swords for cut, practice even self defence.

  • Do all of the Bushido line use the same blade, I am looking at some of the swords on true swords I kind of like the Dragon Fury and the Orient Pearl, I still wonder if they ill be as good as the wind dragon, however.

  • Most of the blades now use the same one as the 'Rosewood Shirasaya'. Which is actually an even BETTER blade. :-)

  • Go fuck your self. This guy kicks ass and gives great sword advice. Awesome vids by the way. ^-^

  • Ah, I see you are familiar with 'loose fat monkey' form...

  • Actually I am the grand master of said form.

  • Then I make myself low in your presence master.

  • Haha ha. legends

  • To test a "sword", a katana, u first need to learn how to cut, how to use it, wow!!!

  • lol you have no idea how to use a Katana.

  • my bad. bullshit may have been a little too strong of a word, all im saying is that i have not paid over a hundred bucks for any of my katanas, even the folded steel ones, and they love bamboo and tatami

  • i havent paid over 100 bucks any of my masahiro or musashi katanas either, and they can cut tatami and bamboo also. i think wallhangers seem to give decent musashi and masahiro swords a bad mark cause they are such a cheap price! but they do their job.

  • bullshit!!you dont have to break the bank to cut thru tatami, i have a $40, 1065 carbon steel katana that loves to eat tatami and bamboo, masahiro and furubushido swords are just fine and wont cost more than a $100,

  • Um, both of these swords were $59. One performed and the other didn't. How is that BS?

  • The Blood Reign test was very funny. Was it checked for sharpness or used right out of the box.

  • All straight out of the box.

  • never cut with a sword that cost less that dinner for you and four friends at pizza hut.

  • Hehe, is that you Matt? ;-)

I agree with this. But I'd probably go further 'never cut with a sword that you haven't fully inspected and do not have reliable information on'. Price alone can be misleading, even $1000 swords can have fatal flaws...

  • I am not intending to flame here so.....

I think you are setting a bad precedent by cutting with swords that are not designed as 'real' swords.

I agree, price is not everything, but buying a good ito and investing in quality is the first step. Frankly most fatal flaws are so small that the human eye would not see them, or they are internal and imposable to see.

you do not have to spend 1000 on a good sword to cut with either, but I would not spend say, less than 300 and expect it to perform

  • Fair enough, to each his own. Many people swear by Cheness and the Practical Hanwei line though (and not just 'backyard cutters') - and if you read the full review, you'll see that it isn't really advocating these as a serious cutting sword...

  • to get a katana simply that can cut threw bamboo is hard to find at those price's altho there are seller's who sell razor sharp swords for $80 - $500 (the $400 katana'a are forged traditionly but i dont think they use the right materials)

  • I bought the blood reign a while back. I haven't seen anyone selling them anymore and thats the way it should be. After the ito unraveled i figured i would take it apart to learn all i could about it. the handle was made of some really cheap crap wood. when i did a bend test on the blade it stayed bent. the sword literally had no temper. in short, it was a real pos.

  • psh >_> i make better swords than that...

  • Lol. Well, for $59 one of them is pretty good. But like all things, to a large degree, 'ya get what ya pay for' ;-)

  • tameshigiri is hard!

  • Hey nice video, I have a brief review of some real old school swords. They can cut through anything. Seriously I'm always shocked at how tough and sharp they are. So check out the video Katana Review, to see these real samurai swords.

  • how do you figure out how much the shipping costs on trueswords? (I live in CA)

  • Just go through the cart as if you are going to order. You can see how much the shipping is that way without necessarily buying it (works on just about every site out there that has shipping).

  • the wind dragon is a beast for the price

  • Paul!thank you so much for all the test wideo.i am look foward to one cheness "Tenchi" fromm your website

    thanks man.

  • No probs Mike. The Tenchi ROCKS... :-0)

  • Hm...I never even conceived the thought that any video showing a katana with poor form would be of use to me in any way. Now I'm seriously starting to consider placing my faith in cheaper katana, because let's face it, you won't be going around cutting with an antique blade.

Much appreciated, Mr. SwordBuyersGuide, if that IS your real name.

  • Lol. That's my surname. ;-)

    My real name is Paul.

  • Okay, Mr. Paul SwordBuyersGuide, you just convinced one more person to pick up a Wind Dragon. Nice job. =D

  • Lol. You won't be dissapointed. :-D

  • yo do u thing i should get that wind 1 cuss i just wanna cut stuff up cuss i dont need a pricey 1

  • I have this sword but, I don't plan on cutting someone down any time soon so why would I worry about how sharp it is. Any way if wanted to make it sharper, all I would have to do is get a water stone or some flint.

  • It certainly does... But funny that, despite the fact that he is obviously self trained, both swords are the same price and yet he can cut easily with one of them and not at all with the other...

  • Looks like the man in the video doensn't have the first clue how to cut properly.

  • i read your web site and went to trueswords, i noticed

another katana in the bushido series, the sea dragon, do you have any opinion on that one? i am considering buying it.

  • Yeah, performance wise it is the same as the Wind Dragon. Only the fittings are different.

  • the problem may be about the katana but since you use it like a baseball bat, may be we shall give one last chance to you to prove your technique..

  • Sure, my technique sux - but the same baseballing cuts fail on the first one and work on the second - plus looking at the geometry, I think despite poor form these tests still prove SOMETHING..? ;-)

  • :) the more blunt it is, the more it will hurt:D

  • LOL - very true!

  • hey can you give me some katana tips like on how to use a katana

  • what should I tell you?

    :)

  • oh like what the best way is to cut down things and what speed should you run at all of that thanks
