I've been to Wildwood every year since 1964. A lot has changed but it is still one the best vacation spots especially for young kids! I love Wildwood!
i was born and raised in the northeast. i just don't "get" the shore, especially wildwood. my parents always went to florida for the beach. they spent the same amount in 3 weeks that people spent in just a week down the shore -- including airfare -- in the later 70s and early 80s.
I've been to Florida beaches many times. They're pretty: the big birds, the white sand. But they're so tiny compared to Wildwood. If you want a cute, pretty little beach, Florida is fine. But for a huge, thrilling, exciting place (especially for a kid in the 60's), that's Wildwood!
A person who doesn't like going to big, exciting places is not going to care for Wildwood. But for kids like I was, parks and amusement parks and things are fun, but the high point of any summer can only be Wildwood.
What a great time to be alive, awesome memories there, I can remember doing many of the same things with a bucket...oops, I think we called it a pail back then :)
this brings back a lot. I grew up in S.Philly and vacation trips to Wildwood were at the top of the list. All through the 60s with the family in various seaside rentals. The memories are of another time, but the experience of it is with me to this day - much like the faded images in this family film.
The summer of 1954 was Wildwood's best. Bill Haley and the Comets were the top act in town and a 12 year old kid like me could hear them from the boardwalk. The Philadelphia Daily News cost a dime but usually you gave the kid a quarter and told him, "keep the change." If the Phillies were playing, half the readios on the beach would be listening to Byrum Saam broadcast the game. Robin Roberts was the best pitcher in baseball and anything Willie Mays could ever catch, Richie Asburn could too,
This video is great for all of us that spent our summer vacations there. When you see older film like this it just brings back fantastic memories of family and fun. There was no place like Wildwood back then. For all those that spent time here know exactly what I am felling when I watch this video. THANKS.
WOW ! i forgot how far the water came up to the amusement piers! the pilings are in the water! today it seems like a mile or so to reach the water in Wildwood and Wildwood Crest.!!! while many beaches along the East coast lose shoreline to storms every years, Wildwood and the Crest actually Gain sand! WOW!
hhhhhhhhh Grandma and Grandpas resturants! i loved the faces in their signs! The aqua circus! and reguards to the GOLDEN NUGGETT RIDE, i found out from a friend of Mr Morey, of Moreys piers, is that the ride is full of asbestos, not good.... That is why it sits there today, untouched. Thanks for these memories!!
I used to go to Wildwood almost every year till 1967. Around 1961 I was standing on the beach when a military fighter jet swooped down about 200 feet over the water. I saw it coming but there was no sound...until he passed....KaBoommm!!! He broke the sound barrier which scared the tar out of me! I was only 9 years old but could actually remember seeing the pilot's head through his canopy because he was flying so low!
Every day after supper we spent the rest of the evening on the boardwalk!
wish i could have experienced wildwood in the 60s. im only 19 so u couldn't even remember the original hunt's pier or when the ocean was up that far in wildwood. great vid.
Glad to see someone your age appreciate what we were lucky enough to have experienced back then. It was truely a special place to be, and just as cool as you could ever imagine from any pictures you may have seen. I still get a homesick feeling when I see these old views of Wildwood, all the memories of family vacations at the shore. Thanks to RickK1 for sharing with us!
I remember summers in Wildwood in the late 60's and early 70's. Grandma and Grandpas resturants on the boardwalk, the Batmobile ride. Mr Softee icecream on the boards. Those were the days.
Wow Thanks for sharing.Mom and Dad took us every year for a week stayed at the Garden Manor at 16th and surf..Still go down to get Macks Pizza.Happier times
Im 46 and grew up in wildwood every summer...I miss the old wildwood..the town, the boards, the hotels, motels....all condo's now..such a shame....I miss the old sportland and hunts pier...and the Aqua Circus on the boardwalk...the smell of waffles & ice cream....all before the over priced water parks..The old wooden bridge on the way in from Grassy sound in North wildwood...those were the days....best years of my life...wish I could have them back..
I'm 45 and I tell my kids all the time that every summer I spent on Magnolia Ave was the best time of my life. We didn"t have a pool,TV or AC at our apartment but we had the mile long beach, Nates hot dogs and Hunts pier.
Where did you stay on Magnolia Ave.?? I lived an old rooming house hotel called the Acadia. I heard it was torn down in the 70s. We had to take showers in an outside shower stall. We only had a toilet and sink in our room. You did not need A C ; it was cool in the evenings
I went to wildwood from 84 to 2003, my grandparents considered it their old fashioned getaway. They never had a TV, AC, etc. Outdoor shower, outdoor steps. 25th st. fond fond memories
Maybe if everyone emails or mails the Morey Family a letter asking them to put back in operation The Golden Nuggett Ride they would.A Nice jester on the morey family would be to get it back into operation and as a community service let everyone ride it free as a reminder of what came before them.
My Favorite ride was the Jets they would go up then when you shifted they would go up another 20 feet.I work for The Spectrum in Philly and some years ago Pat Croce and our CEO Peter Lutko were going to buy Hunts and rebuild it back to Specs but it never happened.I would love to see the Golden Nugget put back in Operation by Moreys Pier .
Hi I remember Hunts Pier very well,My Mom and Dad would take my brother Bob and my sisters Lisa and Donna to the beach in Avalon and no they did not charge to go on any beach then and we would swim and then go up and have a hamburger on the small bathhouse restaurant that was on the pier there, then at about 4 we would go over to the Wildwood Boardwalk and have dinner then go on all the rides.go to next comment...
Wow! I was the same age and probably on the beach that day 10 blocks away. Remember the ocean coming up under the piers? It has been a while.....And the PT-109 passing no less.
I miss Hunt's Pier. I was there between 1980-1983 when Hunt owned it, he sold the pier fall 1985, and again between 95-96-98. The Golden Nugget ride is still there closed since Sept. 1998. Morey's Pier wants to reopen it. I miss Castle Dracula, too. And many motels were demoed for condos recently.
i love wildwood

They're home movies my father took with his 8mm film camera, back in the 1960's (probably sometime around 1967 or 1968).
