Reger, to me, is Bach FOR SURE with a HUGE twist. Also, Paul isn't concerned with being "completely correct"...He's all about reaching out to people through the music and that he clearly does. One thing is for sure, classical musicians and enthusiasts alike need to get off this 'high horse' of politics because you only live ONCE to make a difference and impact. If you don't like something, stop talking about it and do something on your own to add variety, not negativity.
Reger did say that he and Brahms unfortunately wrote in tempi that are to fast. The church acoustics certainly have a lot to do with that, as the fast-paced harmonic rhythm becomes distorted. Essentially, it feels like one is on an extreme roller coaster ride. I believe Paui is a stunning player and person, but this Reger is simply not to my taste. Often those with the great talent of an unbelievable technique tend to misuse it for show. That said, I must say I wish I had such a technique!
[This comment also applies to the preceding Fantasia played on the same instrument by the same player (likely same occasion?).] Roll over Liszt (regarding his effort on the same theme!)!!! Reger here wrote a pair of masterpieces that deserve to be heard and loved a heck of a lot more than they are - all played here sympathetically yet with the required "complete technical mastery of the instrument" (as Reger put it) by an organist obviously in love with the music!! Bravissimo!!!
@kosmologie Sorry but you have no room, whoever you are, to judge Paul Jacobs. He's supremely awesome and when you are head of the organ department at Julliard, I'll listen.
@kosmologie Nathan Laube is very, very good, no doubt. But finest organist in the US is a bit of a big statement to make. The US has many fine organists to its credit, not all of them are big in the spotlight right now.
@Caezar460 I'm not weighing an opinion in here, but I will say that just because one isn't as highly placed in the world as Paul Jacobs doesn't mean one can't have an opinion about him.
Juilliard's mostly just a name these days anyway...

I appreciate the technical mastery of this organist and the powerful interpretation, but I must admit I have never heard such a confused fugue and this is definitely the great difference between Bach and Reger: Bach use fugues to sing in an extreme "cantabile" and the entrances of subjects are always perfectly clear and expressive, Reger is erratic, not able to orchestrate properly, ultimately with a poor sense of bigger forms in which fugues can be contained.
You sould try, in my opinion, the fugues from the Hiller and Mozart Variations, which both should prevent you to repeat such remarks about Reger's ability to compose beautiful fugues and to orchestrate properly. Concerning the organ, perhaps the fugue from the Chorale fantasia "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme", wonderfully played on youtube by Joachim Essig. Reger can sing too :)
Bach is the greatest master of the organ, no doubt. But that doesnt mean Reger is terrible. His style is just different (different personalities, eras of music, composing styles, etc).
I didn't want to say that Reger is terrible, only to emphasize the fact that Reger's fugues, although very complex indeed, are actually rather confused, at least this is my perception. Anyway I like Reger as I like fugues.
Very well, I'm very found of Baroque as well, and I mean Purcell, Haendel, Vivaldi, Bach. I don't like the romantic period, but, perhaps rather strangely, I find Schoenberg, Webern, Berg and Hindemith very interesting to listen to. As far as Reger is concerned, I agree with you, it's the very top of technical difficulty in organ literature, like Liszt for piano.
This video does not do Paul's playing justice. I got to see him perform 20 or so feet away when he played this piece and some organ works by JS Bach at Brigham Young University-Idaho on thr Ruffati Organ. He was spectacular. He is very kind too - I had the privilege of meeting him.
But the thing is if you want to play music like this, all you have to do is let your soul GO!!!! Look into Paul Jacobs! Watch and learn...OH YEAH! fasten your seat belt too because he is quite dynamic..He is a good friends trust me!
Everyone, this is a not only a musician but a pure artist. All those oh are out to ALWAYS judge and say "that's not how he wrote it how dare you!" Might just need a reality check from concert organist and chair of the organ department of Juilliard, Paul Jacobs. The man is purely Genius!!! NO ONE can play music(in my opinion)as blissful, transcending, surreal, and true as he can.

It empty into a hysterical finish. The two last minutes are too fast. Reger admired Bach but he was not barking mad for this reason.
@ dihydroxypho: I think BACH is "absolute Musik". Reger payed homage to Bach with this not to the lord.

Masterful playing of this monumental fugue - - Reger, Lizst, Widor, Vierne, and Bach are all cheering from the wings!! Bravo!

so WE GERMAN ORGANISTS have the right to protect his music against

... and sorry, Nathan Laube ist the finest Organist in US. Jacobs maybe is an
Virtuoso like Camweron Carpenter, but they are Showorganists!
(I played Reges BACH op. 46 as well and exactly fast as Jacobs but not
with this ugly staccato - each good german Organist can play it!).

Ah gotcha. I like them fine enough, though I am much much more the baroque fan. I dont listen to Romantic as much and seldom do I listen to modern.
Heck, Id be confused trying to play this piece -its one of the hardest in organ literature!
