If I happened to hear Aimee by accident sing like this in a small setting unexpectedly, someone would need to remind me to breath after she was finished, Aimee's singing can be breathtakingly beautiful sometimes.
For the record, it's not a compliment when you take the time to insult someone else by contrast.
"Wow, I love Singer A so much. Because by comparison, Singer 1 SUCKS ASS!"
And that pretty much goes for everything, "I like hanging with guys because women suck." And "I like dating you, because my last g'f sucked." And "I pick John for the team because that other guys sucks."
Just sayin'. Being judgmental of others in a compliment isn't a compliment.
@VideoMenu you are one of a few who even realize this type of dualism in other's insecurity, that of insult/compliment. Most are too ignorant to see it for what it is,weakness, meekness, insecure, unorigional, parrots mimicking the hive mind. Well done. Solace comes by knowing I'm not alone in the world.Peace
Yes. Yes. A singer who is not screaming every word. Soft, smooth. Wonderful. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the screaming singers, but why can't we get an artist like this winning american idol?
I think I know someone who won the curly fries" haha I wonder if this was from past experience prior to Til Tuesday or somewhere in between after her Rush cameo
I LOVE the line "Now he's numbering himself among the masterminds". I don't know how or why or who "he" is, but this song gets me. I love the nasal quality to her voice in this song in particular.
Any attempts at demystifying the meaning of this song, which I'm sure is very personal (as many A. Mann songs are), would be much appreciated.
P.S. Why does everyone talk about Lady Gaga? How has this bee-otch hurt you, huh? It seems like half of YouTube is a forum for insult of other artists.
@MyAngelMamaMine It's about her time spent on Geffen (I didn't make the connection at first either but then when you see it in that context the lines take on a different meaning), this was on her first independent release as a solo artist. They tried to sexualise her image etc. She mentioned it as the meaning of the song in interviews and I believe also the press release for the album.

Bachelor No. 2 album is best all-round concept album since Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Phenomenal tunes, genius lyricist, great backup band--all recorded, I think, in her living room.
I like the song and I like her music but every time I watch this video I'm a little annoyed that she think she's some kind of mortal lock to win the curly fries. She doesn't know who's up next, it just seems a bit arrogant is all.
This song is sublime in its layers, in its composition, in its execution. One of my all time favorites from this amazing woman. Listen to this on headphones if you dare. It's on Bachelor #2. You won't be able to listen to it only once.
@MITCHWILD Is this no longer a free country now that nazi Obama is in office? You can judge her on anything you want, be it her singing or her manicure or her hairstyle for all I care...I will judge her on what I want to judge her on. God Bless America!
@MITCHWILD Well, 15 years above me would still need about another 25 - 40 years to get there, but I know what you mean. We are a descending society, no doubt! It's like a Reverse Renaissance...very sad!
You can really hear the sound of Doll Congress in her music. I really love the whole sound of that group of musicians from the L.A. area, Michael Penn and everyone. They really do all work well together.
Awesome song, so there's no need for the wrapper, no matter how cute and smart (Karaoke bar, Til Tuesday reference, etc.).
Also, as some have mentioned, curly fries at a Japanese restaurant? I get the point - its part of the overly cute/smart wrapper, but it feels like different people wrote the front and back ends.
I am a Amiee fan for many reasons. Number one would have to be her song lyrics. For example, The Forgotten Arm cd deals with addiction. Being a former addict I can relate to many of her songs. I know this sounds weird but, her songs have helped me deal with my problem. A truly gifited singer/songwriter. Not many of those around today. I wish her continued success.
dmgcat: I have just been getting into her solo stuff in the last two months. It's just awesome...This is from "Bachelor #2." And two other awesome albums are "@#$! Smilers" and "The Forgotten Arm."
What I love about Aimee Mann is that she is an originator. And what she does, she does it well. I am guessing that many people are unaware of her song with Rush. She sings "Time...stands still". Aimee's timing was also perfect in that MTV was HUUUUUUUGE during her break-out era, whihc no-doubt played a huge role in catapulting her career. But again, "Voices Carry" deserved the spotlight because it IS a special and unique song!
Aimee is such a unique and wonderful talent- it's too bad that often the music videos that accompany her songs are weak, this one is no exception- she needs a director with some inspiration.
FoxIslandman - Yes, there is a small comparison between Aimee and Joni... except Joni never was able to capture any serious song brilliance after her first album. Aimee has been nailing it album after album, song after song.
Nothing against Joni, she just can't hold a candle to Aimee's incredible understanding of how to put emotions into notes and words of a song.
This woman has mad skills. Far more talented than the average bimbos who are the darlings of music critics nowadays. But it doesn't matter - Amy is on a completely different level. ;)
As a producer and songwriter, I would say that Aimee Mann is the most consistent "raw" emotional songwriter in the business. Her songs, either with Til Tuesday or solo, are almost mindboggling in their ability to dig down into the depth of desiring despair and enjoying it. No other female artist can come close. Morissette somehow got the jump out of the gate on Aimee, and I think this is an agent/manager issue, because Aimee Mann/Til Tuesday probably has about 20 songs that could/should be hits.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Like any great singing talent.... if you don't have great song lyrics you can't make great songs... 2 bad Voice's Carry was the only rated song for Aimee..... Sadly another 1 hit wonder to go by the wayside...
As I alway's say.... better than a "no hit" wonder...... I am in that group...
Actually Voices Carry was a hit for 'Til Tuesday, not Aimee the solo artist. And IMO, it is not even that great a song. It's ok, but pretty generic 80's. Her solo stuff is way more evolved, she's crafting music that's way more sophisticated than anything that she did with TT.
it's actually 'get tough' girls, and based on the time of the release, I'd say she's referring to the alterna-punk females of the time - Pink, Avril Lavigne, etc. This is ultimately her departure from Geffen Records because David Geffen didn't like her music - 'so I'll do tricks and get paid in chips from a diamond as big as the Ritz, then I'm calling it quits...'
nice... thanks for posting this mannfan... i was in an aimee mood.. just saw her 3rd annual x-mas show last night here in san diego.. awsome show.. I hadn't seen this vid.. so.. thx again!
How's come she's "it" even when the wind dosen't blow in her hair and petals don't precede her every verse! I really enjoy the transition between points of view!
This is so good it hurts. My GAWD, could this woman be any better.....absolutely incredible talent. She keeps redefining herself with her music, and the whole idea of it, she just amazes me over and over. (How's THAT for Aimee praise? Pretty good, eh? I just adore this lady!!)
Awesome! I have never seen this video before, it's so funny how in the beginning the two girls are singing Voices Carrie. What a great song and video, Aimee Mann is the best:)
Okay folks, why would you write a comment to Aimee Mann (a) without using English and (b) spelling it wrong in Japanese and (c) on YouTube... come on, don't hurt the team.
My gosh! What a beautiful video! Without mention that this is one of the most beautifully writen songs ever. I just loved it. Aimee's got those real moments of genius.
japanese culture is obssessed with all things american, so a lot of the time karaoke bars and stuff served japanese versions of american food curly fries with wasabi kobe beef hamburgers things like that
i love Aimee Mann lyrics ...everyone lady singer else is lame in comparison.. in my humble opinion... i love how the cultural Asian karaoke reference-thing... kinda of funny... i should quit writing now.... Bravo A.M.
I like A.M. too, but how about Pink Martini, Tori Amos, Erin Boheme, Erin Bode, Madeline Peyroux, Norah Jones, Joyce Cooling, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Des'ree and about a hundred others? A blanket statement with horrendous grammar is still a broad generalization. Do some research jpl. I'm not trying to be mean, but damn man.
Love the fact that this was in my home town ^_^!

This is so good it hurts. My GAWD, could this woman be any better.....absolutely incredible talent. She keeps redefining herself with her music, and the whole idea of it, she just amazes me over and over. (How's THAT for Aimee praise? Pretty good, eh? I just adore this lady!!)

At first I didn't really like the song, but the lyrics are interesting if you listen, and the melody is good.

I love the rock-star hair moment. And the fact that she can make fun of herself. She's just an amazing lady.

i love Aimee Mann lyrics ...everyone lady singer else is lame in comparison.. in my humble opinion... i love how the cultural Asian karaoke reference-thing... kinda of funny... i should quit writing now.... Bravo A.M.

I like A.M. too, but how about Pink Martini, Tori Amos, Erin Boheme, Erin Bode, Madeline Peyroux, Norah Jones, Joyce Cooling, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Des'ree and about a hundred others? A blanket statement with horrendous grammar is still a broad generalization. Do some research jpl. I'm not trying to be mean, but damn man.
