  • So glad this video of Cab exists !

  • Mr. Calloway's been listening to some Louis Jordan here, sounds like. What year is this?

  • Having fun is always appropriate. These pros make everything look easy and they very well respected by the audience. Anyone who doesn't get it can't enjoy anything. Class act all the way and they knew it back then...

  • The earliest roots of "white" Rock and Roll is right here.

  • @pucksterz12

    amen school em!

  • @pucksterz12 the roots of nearly all modern music is here

  • Hes so energic!

  • This woman is cabs neighbour .

  • Comment removed

  • But today black people singing about how to shoot somebody while.... not even singing, just talking with back ground music....man, back then it took talent to be famous....

  • Who's the woman? I've seen her in Mr. Beebe also

  • @dustygrady Marie Bryant - check her out in the video "Jamming the blues" (it's on my channel)

  • freekin love it - yeppers, I'll dance to it any night!!!

  • He's pretty tired toward the end there (2:44). Even Cab Calloway runs out of energy at some point =p

  • @Saturos007

Anyone who dances and then sings live will be out of breath. Happens on Broadway all the time.

  • What we miss is elegance and taste. This is style and we don't have that now. It's part of a bigger picture and these people were masters. This is American art.

  • @gcpropertymanagement

When this was new, I don't think mainstream culture regarded it as "elegant" or "tasteful."

  • ...keeps you Groovy 24 hrs. a day!

  • So cool here, and then he did the Blues Brothers Movie and showed he still had it coming and going! Solid Jackson!

  • can`t think of a better way to start the day

  • The trumpet man is Jonah Jones.

  • in my opinion, this guy was the greatest musician to ever live.

Look how much enjoyment he's getting simply from preforming, the man's a genius.

  • Yea Calloway Boogie!!!!

  • Dude, if you don't care for the singing/dancing, then you don't care for Cab Calloway. Why even bother posting the video, then?

    Thumbs up for the singing/dancing!

  • How how in the hell is some one going to post a Song and Dance video and then complain about' it Just dosen't make any Damm sense. There is a Good bass player, good band ,and all around excellent performance so i guess (Honestly I don't care for the trumpet player

  • he is ALL TIME AMERICAN SUPERSTAR LEGEND !! my god he is so unique that's america has been build !! i love it ! no comparison you never gonna see that Again ! :D!

  • I hope i'm not the only one who was worried that they had a headless bass player in certain shots...

  • @CourtJackal001 ..... *_* ... LoLz his skin blends in dude! Haha

  • ahaha, I love how he is ALWAYS dancing around with a big shit-eatin' grin on his face.

  • HE IS THE SINGLE GREATEST ALL AROUND PERFORMER OF THE ENTIRE 20TH CENTURY UNDESPUTED HEAVY WEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION !!! CAN I GET AN AMEN 2 DAT ??? !!!

  • @stovall1231 He's right there with the very best of them. With the three Louie's.

  • this is how i fell when i get stoned of weed

  • hail the trumpet

  • best thing about this guy is you look at him and everyone in the band they are always really smiling and enjoying it

  • Comment removed

  • @shutty2582 The best thing about Cab is, there is no way to sit still while listening to his music. It has a way of makin' you groove to the tunes.

  • Love Cab !!!

  • Comment removed

  • cab is burning

  • omg!!!! how could you NOT like the dancing!!!!???? That's what it's all about! ;) woot!

  • Mr. thavault, I do care for the dancing and singing but I love cab calloway, I hear your point and i just wanted to say thanks for posting.

And you taught me something, pay attention to that trumpet, your right it IS burning ;)

  • Such a different time. Now-a-days it seems music has gone out the window. I love the older stuff!

  • this guy new how 2 dance no joke

  • this generation was the best!!!! what happened to us???

  • The girl is sure hot!

  • why comments like "I'm 13 and I love these old songs" or "I'm 4 years old and I simply adore Bill Haley and His Comets" became so common on Youtube? It's fucking annoying.

  • @dbonfa555 You are so right, I've said the same damn thing. Like "I'm 12 and I love this." Who cares how old you are, it's so stupid.

  • Joyful......We should be dancing these at party's not house-music, trans and so on. If there was a place where you'd get only these kind of music I would go there twice a week. Keeps me fit! And doesn't give me "headache".

  • That there is some footwork!

  • the man was the esence of koooooooooool daddy ya hep to da jive

    and Ellington's "Bli-Blip"

  • I always play Cab Calloway when I get high, it's a must for me! :D

  • No mikes or amps, pure talent. Crap today.

  • love it!

  • did anyone alse know that theres an underground dicsco scene?!.... and so there is one for swing aswell...worry not my friends it will rise again! history repeats its self all the time!

  • @RAMMSTEIN2SETH I go swing dancing every week, it's so freaking amazing, I love it.

  • @RAMMSTEIN2SETH it's never gonna be as good - there's a reason people in the entertainment industry had more talented way back when

...you actually had to do something to get people's attention and that record deal

  • @busessuck1 They did not have more talent back then. That is one of the most absurd comments ever. Yes, there are some people today famous for the wrong reasons, but the talent is still excellent.

  • @IronHawk Had more talented "people"...

is what i meant to say, there were MORE people who were MORE proficient at what they did because them people in charge of record companies had to be sure it was gonna sell or they'd be out of bussiness

when someone has it easier they're not gonna work that hard, i don't get what it is you're contradicting... show me some talent from today i'll give you a hundred people who could have done it better in black and white hehe

  • Swing It!!!

  • Back when dancing meant something and actually looked like dancing.

  • @stunnerand3

    I second that emotion!

    :-)

  • You know what is the biggest disgrace ? The revenues of the ads of this youtube video going towards that Hudson Music instructional drum DVD.

  • I was born in the wrong time, man can't believe i missed this!

  • I'll like it verry much

  • I like when Cab's hair flops around when hes dancing

also pianist be checkin da fine lady out heeeyyyyyy

  • hey why not dance with a babe while everyones soloin

  • thavault, if you didnt like it, whyd yo post it.

  • @vetb882

just as he wrote, he especially likes the trumpet player.

  • A young Panama Francis on drums and a young Milt Hinton on Bass.I don't know anyone else.

  • @jamlear thanks for the info. Panama was one of the greatest drummers of all time. Man he could swing!

  • @Dittmoe13 this kind of music IS making a resergence, its not mainstream (thank god) but its out there, you've just got to find it. I dance to live bands playing this kind of music, young musicians that know how to swing! If you look into the lindy hop/swing dancing scene....you'll find the bands. Check out George Gee and his Orchestra.

  • The dancer is Anne Bryant

  • Cool is cool, don't matter how old or off the wall it is...Just is

  • Strictly from wowsville, daddy-0! If Cab & his band had been any more cool, they'd have been frozen! I'd rather listen to this kinda jive than most of what passes for "music" today! As they used to say, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing! THANKS for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! :)

  • ERios@Rumba351.com

  • Thumbs up for the vid. Down for the description... :/

  • @goggishdotcom Indeed I agree Cab Calloway was most definately the Coolest Cat EVER!!! And loved his dancing so much energy in everything he did on stage and tv... He was an amazing entertainer!

  • To hell with today, I'm going to build a time machine, and go back to right there! Go man GO!!

  • Dave Rivera on piano; Jonah Jones, trumpet.

  • im 17 and i think cab is one cool cat wish i was alive then so i could have seen him swing and jive. Rip Cab

  • Tremendously enjoyable

  • Cab Calloway could out dance all of them.

  • I agree!!!

  • Don't like the singing and dancing? You don't like nuthin' then!

  • I agree the singing in this isn't that great in this video (I'm sure he had time constrictions given the era)... However the recorded/album version is brilliant. Though I have to say any time I see or hear Calloway I get goose bumps.

  • go Cab!

  • Wonderful film...great quality....the singing and dancing is just great!!!...Don't know what the heck you were watching thavault,,,It's Cab Calloway!...head banging and hair flying...loved it!

  • tumpeter is almost gen... but dancing and singing is not so bad.

  • Well if you "don't care" for the singing/dancing then you must be with two feet in the grave! Gorgeous dancer w Cab, but I must admit that the trumpet player was kicking tall ass! Great video and thanks for sharing it!

  • I LOVE Cab C!!!!!!!! He's the king! I could dance to his music forever! (Lindy Hop for the win!!!!!) ^_^

  • Sorry the trumpet is JONAH JONES not Doc Cheatham ............too much POWER !!!!!

  • They don't make music like this ANYMORE! When was his 'reign'?

  • The dance steps (when there actual dance steps) are basic time steps that are the first thing tap dancers learn. It's the Calloway talent that puts them across so well.

  • youre right

  • the dancing appears to be the remnant of the "flapper" style of the 20s. i personally love his music and have several original 78s

  • He's chasing a trend here, but he does it well.

  • He wasn't following a trend, he was helping to set one.

  • It contains the elements of 50's Rock 'n' Roll

  • Charles Lindenberg, crossed the Atlantic, Solo, on May the 20th, 1927.

When "Shorty George" Saunders, was asked "What kind of dance are these guys doing ?" at a Dance off, at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, He didn`t know. But glimpsed a News paper Head Line, "Lindy Hops the Atlantic" George replied, to the Reporter "The Lindy Hop!" And so, this is the BIRTH, of what you called "elements of Rock`n`Roll"

    The Date. May 1927

    The Dance. The Lindy Hop.

  • Thank you! I for one care for the singing and dancing!!!!!

  • @jM2542 amen to that!

  • for great music ....... cab calloway .. louis armstrong .. billie holliday .. duke ellington ... the rat pack ...squirrel nut zippers

  • on drums?

  • "how can one not care for the dancing"? sexy woman dancing to calloway ....damn I'm double turned on

  • CAB CALLOWAY IS THE SHIT!!!

  • im pretty sure this dude was tore up lol he looks like he is

  • GAAHHHDDD Why Can't This Make A Resergenece In Popularity? Pop Music Now Days SUCKS!

  • Even if it did, I don't think it'd do well. our world has changed quite a bit since these days, stuff was much more.. I guess you can say relaxed?

nowadays music is about drugs and much more.. secular aimed, which is fine. I have no problem with society becoming more open but there is just no way it can ever reach this quality again... then again that's just my opinion, earlier music has a strange attraction to people, I usually listen to rock but tunes from back then always get my attention

  • Yeah, That Makes Sense, And Wow, I'm Essentially In The Same Boat As You; I'm A Metal Head At Heart, But Jazz And Swing Get To Me As Well. "Sing Sing Sing", "Jumpin Jive" And "Drunk Daddy - Cherry Poppin Daddies (Do Youtube This, It's BRILLIANT!)" Are Some Of My Favourite Songs Ever - This Coming From A Guy Who Enjoys Everything "Slayer"!

  • Good point PredHulk. But it's funny that you should say that music is now about drugs and more...secular aimed. Check out Cab Calaway's song "Reefer Man" about Marijuana. It's a funny song.

  • I was actually aware of that one :D but in my eyes marijuana is harmless compared to cocaine or heroine, or even alcohol for that matter.

  • @PredHulk I totally agree with you! Heroine, cocaine, and many others are an entirely different thing, and it's unfortunate that they get lumped into the same negative public image. I guess I just enjoy irony too much and wanted to point it out lol. Glad you've heard of Reefer Man. It's a good one :b. And btw, there is good music out there, it's just buried under the garbage. bebop will never be popular again, but someone somewhere will be playing it!

  • marijuana slows your heart rate down but it better than cigarettes

  • Sorry PredHulk, I don't buy that Calloway is good because of clean living. His big hit Minnie the Moocher is about a prostitute, he mentions kicking the gong around in chinatown (opium), and being cokey (cocaine). He and Ellington led house bands in a white only club. This music is in a sleazy/impure context. I think it's good because the best music of old is the music that lasts.

To support your thesis, Duke Ellington and Aretha Franklin have some amazing sacred music worth checking out.

  • Oh I forgot gambling! In St. James Infirmary Blues, he wants the boys to know he's standing pat, which is from poker, and wants craps shooting pall bearers. And there is a long form homefire radio commercial where he is cavorting with a married woman.

  • Comment removed

  • because everybody is too busy thinking that that singer , goo goo gaga actually has talent. stop listening to the crap they have out now and stop promoting it.

  • @Dittmoe13 well it tried to with Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Brian Setzer Orchestra lol. Didn't work out to well

  • @ajatkinson2004 Ironic That I Know Of Both Of Those Bands. Also, Get "The Big Bad Voodoo Daddies - How Big Can You Get" - It's Them, Being A Swing Band, Doing Cab Calloway Covers - Pretty Dam Groovy

  • @Dittmoe13

i play upright bass, looking for some musicians to revive this kind of music lol

  • @Dittmoe13 if you don't remember (not sure how old you are), it DID make a resurgence for a little bit in the late 90's, and it was totally awesome, but i was only 14 when it all ended. i freaking HATE the music that is popular right now too, so i'm right there with you - a resurgence of this would be swweeeeeeeeeeeeet

  • I'm 19. LOVE THIS STUFF. So into swing dancing. I agree. We need this music back to popularity.

  • amen bro ^^

  • @ladyrasberry It's getting there, and we have video games to thank for the resurgance. The popularity of Fallout, BioShock, and those kind of games are breeding a new generation of swingers and jazzers, bluesers and lounge lizards, and I say if video games are doing that: So be it.

  • That trumpeter was the great, but under rated Jonah Jones!

  • Nice video - the trumpet player is On - and the dancing is great too

  • I love this!! I wish more people my age still listened to this music. It's so much better than most of the crap that's popular today. Thanks for posting!

BTW, was that Louis Armstrong playing trumpet in this video?

  • @Les342 im 15 been listenin to this sincei was 13

listen to mood indigo by louis armstrong

    thats my favorite track

  • REAL JITTERBUGGIN!!!! SMOOTH AS SILK

  • Michael Jackson could not hold a candle to the great Cab Calloway!

  • yea

  • This was back in My Day!

    Cabs a COOL CAT!

But I like the Hot Mama "Better!

They acted like they were a little afraid to show the Mama! They were like that in DEM DAYS!

About Black Mamas! JOE FRAZIER spoke about it in the 70s, when he had a BAND!

  • Cab Calloway was a genious.

  • Cab's hot as the devil burned black. One of my favorite band-leaders.

  • Hidy hidy ho!

  • This guy was the king long before Michael Jackson!

  • @bdienstag

    hell...before Michael was even born!

  • lol my last name is Calloway, and my grandma used to sing this to me to make me dance when I was little! My dancing was NOTHING like this though. lol

Even though I'm only 18, I really love this music!!! Thanks for posting! =)

  • @treneacall91

lol i know ur grandma was fun...

    mine was too

  • wooooooooooooooooooooo!

  • Wow!Este hombre fue un genio! Tiene un ritmo loco, una manera de cantar y bailar!

    Es fantastico!

  • The way is hair is moving is funny to me.

  • Cab Calloway sure could move one cool cat.

  • DAYUM they sure could SWING! Nice!

  • Honestly, Iove the singing and dancing. It's pure unbridled joy. Bartender, give me two tokes of red reefer, a strong cup of coffee and go ahead and sell my car cause I ain't never goin home...hodeeodeeodeeoooo!

  • Well, I was dancin...on the furniture even! LOL

  • My Grandmama told me when she seen Mr Calloway in 1930 he and his band came to Nashville and was ran out of town because when he sang and dance his hair would fall in his face, and the white women would cry and fall out.I just loved this Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awsome! i have no words to say! :D epic

  • Simply Marvelous! It shows the Olympian heights African american music and dance had scaled. It set the standard for all uniquely American venacular dance and modern complex instrumental music - by comparison there can be no doubt that we live in a time of pervasive commercial banalities and creeping decadence!

  • Absolutely agree!!!

  • im sure you are aware that they called this decadent when it was new lol.
