Was this video shot at Lake Cumberland in Kentucky? If it was, the water level is normaly much higher than that. The earthen dam was leaking & there was some concern that it might fail. Hate to be down stream if it did. The amount of water in the lake was greatly reduced (it's a huge lake) to relieve some of the pressure against the dam while repairs were attempted. Normally, one would just step off of a pier right on to the deck of their boat.

I took my wife repelling recently, she fell- just like this chick. After watching this video I think the tricky part is going over edge in such a way that your legs are always perpendicular to the angle of the top rope. Starting off standing your legs are vertical- the rope is horizontal- while repelling your legs become horizontal and the rope vertical. In that transition either go very slow or hop down a bit. Otherwise you get dirt on your shorts. :D

Well, I learned to rappel (and other rope stuff) by myself..

And with my (by no means enormous) experience, I could quickly and safely (assuming good anchor) rappel that cliff in flip flops, slippers, or barefoot at a push.

Unless your planning on really screaming down the rope (not really advisable, though fun), footwear is not an important issue.

In fact I've done vertical rock climbs in flip flops, though that is a bit more tricky.

It's tricky for beginners to get over the edge when the rope is anchored low. She was probably told to keep her feet on the edge and let out the rope slowly.

But if your feet are on the edge when the rope is anchored low, your weight isn't supported when your legs approach horizontal, and your ass drops until the rope hits the edge, which puts it way below your feet.
