Why Queen never re-made this song later on, I'll never understand. It sounds like something that ol' Freddie could've sang the hell outta, and the operatic harmonies would not have ruined the vibe for sure!
I was reading an article that documents the history of the members pre-Queen, and it said that Tim's voice was identical to Freddie's on this song and "Doing Alright". I don't think they sound that similar, I mean Freddie's voice back then was higher and dare I say it, a bit more... girlish?
But this dude was clearly talented in his own right as a singer. And I do agree that Brian and Roger should have called up Tim and reformed Smile as oppose to doing Queen + Paul Rodgers.
i think smile is a real under appreciated band. just goes to show that the other members of queen were really talented despite not having freddy mercury.
It would be great to have a Smile reunion, with a project album, new songs. Tim Staffel's style is certainly closer to Queen than Paul Roger is... But 40 years passed. Tim Staffel remains a very good singer, but the voice changed a lot. It sounds far more bluesy now, broken. In 69 it sounded so young, simply rock'n'roll, rythmically straight, oddly close to the early Freddie's voice (compare Smile and Queen/Queen II). So yes, let's hope a return of Smile, but it'll be different.
Queen and Paul Rodgers should break up. There is NO Queen without Freddie and John, So Smile should reunite:D then we can have songs like this again:D
They don't technically go under the label "Queen" anymore, it's sort of a side project of the remaining members of Queen. And they broke up back in May
I agree. Queen haven't played together since No-One But You (Only The Good Die Young). Queen in Queen+PR is just a name in stead a new band name. It's just safer to stick to the old, successful name Queen. I didn't like Paul Rodgers taking Freddie's place, but he didn't. He just sang his new band's songs together with his band. Queen+Paul Rodgers was actually a very good band. Smile is also one of my favorite bands of all time. But let's all agree that Queen is the best, most unique band ever!
That is a piano we hear here. Could have been Brian. Tim or Roger even. Could also have been just someone working at Trident - an engineer or mixer or what-not.
This is a great song, best by Smile in my opinion, had this for a few years now and have always loved it.Not to sure about him singing for Queen, although would definetly be interesting to hear them together now.
More of the fans I think would of prefered Tim but Paul Rodgers is a bigger name.
Dave, i think you've made a mistake in the lyrics; Tim said "been asleep from all the journeys a little while" and not " been asleep for more than just a little while"

With all respect, but I'm quite sure this is Freddie who is singing. At this period Tim was a better singer than Freddie. Just listen to "Doin' Alright" by Smile (with Tim) and you'll hear the difference.
And I must add that no one is better than Freddie :p Staffell is good, but he has another voice. And I think that without Freddie they wouldn't be so famous, there wouldn't be piano and fairy tales and so othet. But I like Stafflell voice in Smile ;)
Another voice? Actually Freddie was taken to the band because his voice was so similar to Tim. Unlike Tim he didn`t play bass so they had to take extra bass player too.
E, I can't speak so vell in English, so I can't write everything I want too. I think Freddie has another voice, maybe it's cause that 3,5 octave, I can't explain in English. And Staffell can't play piano I think. Anyway if there won't be Freddie we probably can't hear about John Deacon.
why is paul singing in the new queen? why isn't tim singing. god he's really good. i think he could fill freddie's shoes. not exactly but ya kno what im trying to say
So I assumed that he played piano...I mean could Tim even play piano? And Roger wasn't that good of a keyboardist at this point. So it's either Brian or a session keyboardist...
well it was written during their time with 1984 were i thought i saw somewhere that it was written by tim and brian. that is most likely who wrote it other dispute on writing credits was blag which had liner notes that said Roger Taylor but brian said he wrote it.
This song is too beautiful for words!!! Every time I hear it I cant help but be happy & have a smile on my face!!!! ♥

If anyone replaces Freddie, it should be Andy Sturmer from Jellyfish. Those guys sound a lot like Queen.

Dave, i think you've made a mistake in the lyrics; Tim said "been asleep from all the journeys a little while" and not " been asleep for more than just a little while"
... but i'm wrong too ..

RedSpecial-yeah you were wrong. Dave had it right. But I can see where you got that idea though.

That's quite odd, cos it really seems like he's saying "from all the journeys" !!
Well, never mind what he said, it doesn't change the fact that the song is GREAT !! ^^

even the sense, it's quite logical "for more than just a little while"
