  • Just read part of John Steinbeck's East of Eden when they explain how to do this. Wanted to see it for myself. Very cool!

  • 1927-2012 Look where we were and where we're at. T model/ Bugatti... I wonder what will be out in 2097. our most "technological advanced" automobile now is gonna look like a joke.

  • @twistedyogert How much are these cars today? Well it depends on the condition of course, An original, unrestored & well-maintained T could be worth a substantial amount of money and a fully restored T could probably be worth even more, You might want to do some research on the Internet to answer your question.

  • It is fun to see how they had to do it in the old days... very interesting

  • I'd love to have one of these

  • How much are those cars today?

  • @linyuan123 It can STILL snow at 38 degrees in some places, Apparently, You don't seem to realize that.

  • It's snowing. How can it be 38 degrees?

  • @Zultarkius i litterally just had that conversation, as i just inherrited a model t, and my grandfather pointed out that there were so few cars that you would be easy to find... still funny though, and true...

  • BAH!

tis' but a toy for the rich. If man were mean to roll about then he ought to have born with wheels on his feet.

  • ford needs to bring this back for 2012

  • you can get those in any color you want, as long as its black

  • So i guess cars were automatic to start off then huh?

  • @AutoJunkieMan Nah, more of a Half-automatic. The T-Ford had a gearbox of it's own kinde.

  • I remember these old Model-Ts, my father always used the hand crank. I have seen many people break their arms from the hand crank. That is a great looking car, I remember them well.

  • I guess they never thought of the "pull rope" yet have they?

  • that is not a distributor it is just a timer that completes the circuit enabling the coil to buzz and fire the spark plug. It does not distribute spark directly to the spark plug like a distributor.

  • My Great Grandpa has one of these but it's not worth even 2$ because it wont start and it's all rusty and stuff :(

  • Excellent video - your instructions taught me how to get my own Model T going :) Thanks!

  • so are the turn signals on the floor.........lol.....

  • wish it had a 351 block with 400 hp...lol

  • Wow...that started like god, in the cold too, my 2006 taurus(64,000 miles) doesn't start that fast

  • Dear Santa.

  • Some bleeding heart liberal auto editor from LA times or Time magazine (also one of the biggest green poser) put Model T top ten worst war of the century hahahaha! He compares the car craftsmanship to a YUGO! he added that its responsible for sending American troops into Iraq. hahahahahahahahaha!

  • is the spark retarded

  • what are the hand levers on the floor for

  • what kind of mileage does a model -t get ?

    Williambhinshaw@yahoo.com

  • @trooromeo 15-20mpg(not a joke!)

  • The difference between this cars magneto, and a lawn mower is that this one creates an alternating current that ranges between 8- 20 volts depending on the RPM.... the ignition commutator closes the circuit for each coil during the phasing cycle. Each coil; during contact; produces a continuous arc due to each individual coil having a set of vibrating points atop. This is why a model T starts with little effort by hand when the ignition is on battery.

  • I once owned a 1964 Renault "Dauphine" with a four cylinder engine in the rear. I think the company made the car from old beer cans...the quality was terrible. But the engine and transmission were not too bad, designed by a German, Ferdinand Porsche as war reparations. The car came with instructions on how to hand-crank the engine if the battery was dead and a sturdy crank was included in the tool kit. It was an easy start with the crank just like this Model T. Thanks for the video.

  • Where and how can i find and buy this car??

  • very interesting. theres obviously a knack to that

  • Old Henry was distrustful of newfangled crazy ideas like 4 wheel brakes and electric starters!! But these cars always ran, and they didn't have plastic, or computers!!

    Nice old girl...enjoy her :)

  • Stupid question... but can you push the car and get it rolling, jump in, kick it into gear, thereby turning the motor over that way, and crank it up? I've done this so many times in a modern stick shift car its now second nature.

  • broke my hand starting an old Allis Chalmers B ...i gripped the crank with my thumb around the crank...it kicked back and broke my wrist......i also had an old triumph tr3 that had a hand crank...i never could start it with the crank though

  • hj

  • @FelixTheHouseFreak I'll gladly answer your question, The choke is used to give the engine a rich fuel mixture as you said, And also to prime the carburetor, All modern car engines are fuel injected, Therefore they do not have carburetors or chokes, With a manual choke, You pull the knob all the way out before starting a cold engine and as the engine warms up, You gradually push it back in until the engine's running smoothly, You don't want to drive with the choke all the way out as that will e

  • If I decide to own a Model T, where do I buy the parts??

I know Model Ts have no oil filters so I wouldn't worry about that, but can I use a Mercon or Dextron II transmission fluid in a Model T transmission?? What kind of transmission fluid is used in a Model T?

Do Model Ts have air filters and, if so, where can I buy them??

    I welcome any suggestions

  • @harley55100 The Model T clutch and trans shares oil with the engine just like many motorcycles, so a motorcycle oil would work. Transmission fluid wouldn't be good for the engine. It's a splash system, so 10w-30 or 5w-30 would be light enough to flow when cold but still heavy enough when hot.

Good air filters weren't available back then but you can find & adopt something today. All mecanical parts are available from several vendors, see mtfca com - the forum answers any questions

  • I still dont quite understand what the purpose of a choke is, i know it gives the engine a rich fuel mix, but why is this important when starting a car? Thanks.

  • @FelixTheHouseFreak It's important to give an engine a richer fuel mix when all the metal surfaces inside the engine is cold, since some fuel will condensate on these surfaces leaving the spark plug just the compressed air almost without any fuel vapor to ignite unless you richen it up. The air/fuel mix has to be about 15 to one weight wise to be able to ignite - too much fuel is just as bad as too little.

  • After riding horses for all years prior to the car, this must have been pretty amazing to see it for the first time.

  • Can those Model T's last 100,000 miles or more???

Is there ever a Model T that's been driven that many miles???

  • @harley55100 model T's can drive hundreds of thousands of miles and still be fine, they're built like tanks

  • @harley55100 um there are people that have drivin their modle ts for 1,000,000 miles

  • @harley55100 it's a ford... what do you expect xD

  • Those noisy things keep scaring the horses! Those machines will never catch on. For one thing, they are expensive, noisy, and difficult to operate. For another thing sir, I have a friend who actually bought one, but he has no idea of how to operate it, and ran it straight into a tree. He gave up on it, but still has hefty payments remaining.

  • @Smashinz2002 This car is a classic how can you say that?

  • very cool. thanks for sharing your ride man.

  • I knew if there was a video on it it couldn't be simple to start up the ignition.

  • Battery? It doesn't run on gasoline?

  • bravo dude!!

  • that T is fbeautiful.

  • Ford was the first car/truck ever made!!!

  • @myluvhorses

    No it wasnt.

  • @myluvhorses Actually mercedes was they made the motor wagen. I forget the real name and im pretty sure it was mercedes.

  • @myluvhorses Im wrong its the benz motorwagen LOL i think i know how i though it was mercedes... Mercedes "benz"...

  • it be cool to put a turbo in a model t

  • i has bad experiences with hand cranking engines D: kick back + thumb in not good position = bruised

  • incredible! so simple yet so useful

  • Hand-cranking -- one of the lost sciences. Like the (WWI-era) rotary aircraft engine and others. Thx for posting.

  • Starts up more like an airplane than a car.

  • B-H

Doesn't the ECM have to be in the correct software mode so the sensors and EGR will allow the engine to start? Also, the body computer knows when the transmission is in neutral, otherwise the engine won't crank. Your keyless start won't run in crank mode...;0

I miss those simple days...when cars could be fixed even on the road!...Bill H.

  • What a grand ol' buggy.

    Questions:

    (1) Electric start was available (as an option, or standad?) on the Model-T, starting in 1919?

    (2) Some cars, up until the late 30s, had both electric start and the handcrank provison?

  • if the belt breaks literally take someones belt and put it on there :)

  • cool video

  • it should have a throttle like tractors with turtle and rabbit speed and a slower speed named ford lol

  • Very fun video! Here are a few little things explained as I read a few comments, and something that the author missed which is EXTREMELY important. First, car batteries of the era were expensive, had very low cranking amps, and had a life expectancy of 6 months or less. The less you used it to crank the starter, the longer it would last. The reason you did this, was that the headlights were brighter with a battery. Secondly, MAKE SURE YOUR SPARK ADVANCE IS RETARDED!!! (Engine prefire/broken arm)

  • I was always leery about hand cranking an engine...because of the broken thumb (or shoulder or arm) thing. Now I know how. A wonderful piece of automotive history, thank you for helping to preserve it and for sharing your film with us.

  • how old is that man?

  • I have a 24 roadster and 21 touring. I remember grandpa talking about they would have to boil corn cobs and put them under the oil pan in the winter so they would crank easier.

  • cars have gotten easier to drive, not harder, especially going back to early cars. hand throttles, manual spark advance, and many other things no longer used.. most people wouldn't know where to start.... crank starters were put in place on many cars up until the 40's and Chevy kept the provisions on the crank snout until 1952. can't use it because the rad is in the way but it's there

  • Wow! No gas pedal!! Does anyone know the reasoning behind putting BOTH an electric starter AND a handcrank starter on later Model T's? Seems redundant, unless electric starters weren't reliable.

What a great, informative video!! And a really cool car! Thanks for posting, David!!

  • Having an electric starter was not even an option on the model T until 1919. It became standard in 1926 on all model Ts. The electric starters and batteries were not very reliable at that time so all cars were made with a starting crank. I have spun over a model T engine with the crank before and it's surprisingly easy to do. It does not require much strength at all.

    Thanks

  • You are correct. Electric starters weren't reliable then. Batteries at that time were also dry-cel batteries that didn't hold the stored charge very well eiter.

  • @canine2 incase the battery didnt work

  • You answered your own question my friend The handcrank was always left on to have the provision of starting it by hand if the starter/battery is faulty

  • i wonder how many people back in the day broke there arm. haha

  • Actually, quite a few broke their arm or wrist! My understanding is it was refered to by doctors as the "Model T break". Cadillac was the first with a "self starting" (electric start) car...in 1912.

  • I Love FORD T!!!

  • Imagine having to do that with a big V8? That would Suck! Especially If it backfired. Forget breaking your arm! More like breaking your arm off!

  • hehe =p

  • Yes, it would. That is, IF you could even turn it! Hand cranking limited how large/how much compression that you could have in an engine. If you hooked a hand crank to a modern car engine of any size, I'd bet that no one could generate enough force to start it.

  • thank you very much for making this video ... i learned alot!

  • 350 engines and computer controls?

Please people, go back to your look alike condominiums and your maroon Toyota's.

I'll take the fun of a Model T.

The point and fun of it all is to experience how things used to be. Anybody can drive a modern car, or build a hotrod from a catalog.

I want a ride in the original!

  • Same thought, old cars had a more complex design. Anybody could drive cars back then, because they were a lot easier to control, and learn the buttons/gears. I personnaly perfer an old car because of their looks, controls, and all the styles they had. The Model T was a fun ride, especially the touring and the 4-door. They were also as tough as steel, because they were made out of actuall steel other than todays easy to break, fiberglass.

  • i wonder how many women could drive these cars, pretty complex compared to now days, everything electronic controlled and automatic. Alot has changed compared to the pioneers of the automotive industry, I would favor the enginerring of this car instead of something with sensors everywhere on the engine making my check engine light flip on all the time, trust me it gets annoying, specially if its just an O2 sensor, who cares about emmissions

  • I drove a model A around for awhile till my EX blew it up and I am a woman:).

  • that would really suck if you have a "crank no start" on these old cars.......verry cool vid!!

  • I am confused about how the low forward gear works. The drive gear is held still by the weight of the car so the tripple gears are driven around the drive gear which then turns the reverse and low gear drums, but when a drum is locked still the driven gear is forced to move. Both the reverse and forward gears turn the same number of gears which makes it look like the car can only run in reverse. How does low forward gear work?

    Thanks

  • Now imagine its 5:30 in the morning, middle of winter 10 degrees below zero and you've got to get to work!!!!! Have fun crankin!!!!! I'll take computer controlled fuel injection thank you very much. VERY cool old car though. I like to see these old survivors still puttin along thanx for sharing.

  • Damn, I wish I could hand-crank to start my car!! :(

Very nice car and video :)

  • @playa1313

    no, you dont. haha

  • @playa1313 wel allmost every french citroen

  • @playa1313 Youknow that in the 1980's and 90's lada sold cars that could be hand cranked in russia?

  • @playa1313 Nice that it gives you the option to start the engine if your car dies.

  • thank you for the info.

  • that is very cool!!!!!

  • works better than my car does!

    haha

  • Ab Fab!

  • That is a beautiful car! Thanks for showing how to start one? I never knew any of this before? Thanks...

  • Nice ride Dave!

    Bob Hargrave

  • Great car!

Maybe you should have put some more emphasis on always making sure the ignition lever is retarded before starting.
