  • Whoa you have the same keyboard I do

  • @pogokenny I don't have that keyboard anymore :)

  • I just joined a band playing keys and I have no idea what direction to go in, I know scales and chords and bla bla bla but i just cant seem to really do anything original :/. You on the other hand WOW!

  • @Greensockism I know that it sounds so cliche, but really it just takes a lot of practice. When I started writing it took me a little while. I was way to overcritical of myself and that made it even harder. Now, I just do whatever. If I mess up or if it sounds bad, then so what? I laugh to myself and think, "yea...probably should go another direction" - good luck with the band!

  • @phillipmills thanks for what I will now call "The Words of Wisdom" lol seriously good advice and thanks

  • This is great Phillip, could you maybe send me the chords and melody as a message please? I wish I could compose music like you :) subbed & liked

  • @TomWallis04 sorry, I don't even remember. If I recall, I thought that I gave the chords in the video?

  • @phillipmills No you didn't

  • Thank you for sharing your talents with others, beautiful, I love it and you definitely add that touch of feeling into your songs that really move people.. Not everyone can do that, you have quite a gift. I recently sang one of Jim Brickman’s songs for a contest to win tickets to his concert. I have never sung alone in front of anyone other than my husband. I saw your video you played on stage in front of Jim Brickman, about a year ago, such an inspiration.

  • @MsMollybrownie thank you very much. I understand the nervousness and outright terror it can be to start branching out performing in front of others. Congrats on getting the courage to do the video!

  • How long would you say it took you to put all of that together? For my music class we're going to be given four chords and then have 45 minutes to write a piece of music. I'm trying to get some practise but I have no idea where to start...

  • @Georgie1996x honestly...no longer than 5 minutes. Writing comes really natural and easy to me

  • @ThatCommenter I'll have to go with ThatCommenter on this one lol. If I were teaching you to write a song with lyrics, I'd had put that in the title as such. My goal on this was to teach you to compose a solo piano song.

  • @ThatCommenter i say its no longer relevant, cause the important fact is that you guys understand that a song needs friggin lyrics, and a piano piece does not... so, like you said... a damn piano piece, not song.

  • @vengadorsky I'll have to go with ThatCommenter on this one lol. If I were teaching you to write a song with lyrics, I'd had put that in the title as such. My goal on this was to teach you to compose a solo piano song.

  • @ThatCommenter forget a bout the title, thats no longer relevant, the point is that a song needs to have lyrics, other wise its just a piece of music.

  • @vengadorsky besides, you dont write a piano song, you compose a piano piece

  • isnt the title of this video wrong? shouldnt it be ... a piano piece..." cause if it was a song it would implied someone singing right?

  • @vengadorsky nah, i don't think so. a song is a song. verse, chorus, bridge, etc.

  • @phillipmills no i was being polite before, but im pretty sure that song implies someone singing since the word "song" comes from the verb "sing"

Dont mean to be a jerk or something, i really appreciate your upload.

  • thank you sooooo much... :)

  • @Michaela241198 and you're so talented..:)

  • how....how do you make seem so easy haha i cant hardly play much your like amazing at piano!!! ive only taken it for 2 yrs but i take drums for about 6 yrs now but im a year inhead of my self! but really how do you make it seem so easy

  • @tomatoe35 it comes easy after a while :)

  • Not bad at all. It's always refreshing to see talented song writers who write for piano. I am so sick of all these women playing guitar and writing songs. They all sound the same. But I think your piano playing is pretty. Simple, but very pretty, and unique. For me, I literally just play around on my piano until I get inspiration and then I just play what I hear in my head.

  • @ZeldaTetraSheik that's me...keep it simple lol

  • could you make a video with a happy song?

  • @6161unknown maybe one of these days

  • @icestarly i kinda just "wing it" lol to be honest

  • you just inspired me. thank you

  • @laurastdeleon great! my pleasure

  • Hey man, your skills are amazing. Im trying to learn piano myself but im only learning my favorite songs on piano and that doesnt helpmy improv for myself when i want to write. How do you know what sounds good together? Id appreciate the help

  • @BulletProof0193 just takes practice. lots of it

  • I don't know what to say besides your really dope at piano lol

  • @ProductionIlluminati haha thanks a lot! I appreciate that

  • hey, I have the same piano =)

  • @Brianthelion1000 awesome!!

  • i never thought about how those minors and majors and change the mood of the song like it does.. im def gonna attempt that when playing

  • @d0nk3yb0i yup, it really sets a different mood

  • one thing i do NOT know is NOTES lol i play by ear.. ive taken classes 2 try and learn the notes but c is my only key! lmbo a bit of transpose will do me well.. but i REALLY have 2 learn them notes and chords if i want 2 REALLY b able 2 play some top notch im gonna upload some vids of me playin tha keys

  • @d0nk3yb0i yea i play by ear and read notes. it really increases versatility in playing

  • Hi, I kind of create songs in my head. But I can't get them to my hands if you know what I'm talking about xD

Got any tips to begin with?

  • @ThunderDonkey sound it out with one note at a time on your keyboard/piano. then you can slowly figure out the chords. then it will slowly begin to come together.

  • @phillipmills So just got to take my time.. I'll just try to be patient ^^

  • @phillipmills

can you explain me something of chord progressions?

    Please? :)

  • @lucas1997bom there is so much but here's something quick.

every key as three main chords it almost always utilizes - the I, IV, V chords. (in the key of C those chords would be C, F, G. If there is a minor chord being used it will be be the IIIm or VIm a lot. Those aren't set rules, just trends i've noticed through my playing

  • @phillipmills oh, in the key of C those minor chords would be Em and Am

  • I really liked your video. :)

  • @lucas1997bom thanks!

  • I remember watching this video a couple of years ago when i was pretty early in my piano playing... After watching it I wrote a pretty basic piano song. Now I'm watching it again and am a lot more advanced, and writing a song for a Creative Industries academy for my entrance piece.

I just wanted to thank you:)

  • @briannemb I'm glad that it could help!

  • Good song...

But what's with the excessive head movements?

  • @brycedbjork not sure, really. a lot of times i close my eyes and that happens. i'd like to think i'm "one" with the music :)

  • Alright I am trying to write a song for this girl I really care for, and I wanna tell her how much I care and how I feel. If you could, please help me out with writing a happy song . I am not the best pianist, in fact I'm a percussionist, bit I do play a little piano and I wannt her to know how I feel, so no matter how hard the song is I will learn it.

  • @MinusI5ive i am sorry, i barely have the time to play/write much right now.

  • OMG you play soooo amzing it makes me wish I was a better pianist!!! You should write sheet music for this song. Wow, you comvered my sould with musical talent!!! BRAVO :0)

  • @BirdLoversUnited i'm glad :)

  • awesome man youre a great teacher helped alot much appreciated! :D

  • @thewolf498 i'm glad!

  • Sound like an Evanesence song.

  • @tscassid oh yea? which song?

  • @phillipmills No I mean it's just that style. No song in particular.

  • @TSCSOUNDS oh lol

  • what are the notes for the Ebm?

  • @SuddenlySmile Ebm = Eb + F# + Bb

  • @phillipmills you mean Gb. it's the third (G) that you lower a semi tone. (you probably know this but if somebody learns the theory the wrong way... it's not good)

    Peace

  • @kynoks lol well when u begin piano most people learn the note as F# instead of Gb, but they are the same note and it doesnt matter what you call it really :p but then again, i am self-taught so i never had formal piano training/theory. just know what i taught myself

  • @kynoks Gb and f# are the same,, you'll probably just confuse people with all your ~THEORY~ so just stop complaining. Peace.

  • @phillipmills Ebm = Eb + Gb + Bb.... :-)

  • what sort of thing do you do with ur left hand when writting just play the chord or actually play a bassline??

  • @haydenv2 i do random variations of 1-5-1 or just plain randomness within the chord.

  • @phillipmills alright kk thanks cuz when i try and write the left hand just sounds boring sometimes

  • @haydenv2 yea i just do a lot of random stuff. i "hear" what I should do if that makes sense.

  • @TheSamandJonShow great!

  • You're great. Very informative, thanks :)

  • @8BlueSkies good :)

  • You look like barack obama . i wish i could play piano like you.

  • @rockpig57 haha ok then, thats the first time I've heard that :p

  • nice job, check out my vids of my origian piano compisitions, well really there all improvised but whatever, I like the sound that it turns around so to speak, is that a traditional chord progression, Im trying to stay away from regular chord progressions, I was wondering do you know how they write jazz ballad piano songs the harmony is so foreign to me. Awesome work man!!

  • @kiowaloveflute i would say this progression is in between traditional and non-traditional. and sorry, not quite sure

  • I've made a couple of own songs, but I just make from maybe 3 melodies that I thought sounded good. I'm not so good in improvisation yet so I could have some difficults sometimes with playing like you. Great work!

  • @coollein thanks a lot

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooow...

    ◘_◘....nice one...

  • @MarkEric26 thanks

  • You are really good, like for reals!!!!!

  • @xXxiPodSingerxXx thank you

  • nice! and thanks! :p

  • great video! it's you tube footage like this that ecouraged me to learn the piano. on a downside though i spent 5 hours coming with my own song last nite when i should have been doing my dissertation lol. seriously, good work though phil, judging by other comments i know i'm not the only one you've inspired. thanks again fella!

  • @jake41988 haha thanks a lot and I'm glad it could help!

  • Beautiful, it is very inspiring

  • thank you

  • Comment removed

  • i'm confused...

  • someone help are u in a particular scale and if so what is it or are u just playing what sounds good

  • yes there is a specific scale/key I have to stay around but I just play what sounds good too. its a mix.

  • Perfect :)

  • thanks you

  • its so beautifull you are so talented i wish i could do it

  • you can! just practice at it.

  • accidentally deleted your last one in regards to not being able to do it -- my answer, it doesn't happen over night. gotta keep at it. took me a couple years to be able to compose

  • What kind of piano are you using

  • In this video = Yamaha YPG-625

  • Damn I wanna learn how to create music like this..

  • just takes practice and trial & error

  • Very Good and clear, Thank you!

  • thanks. i tried to be as clear as possible in 10 minutes lol

  • Hi Phillip, found you on facebook but, wouldn't let me send the message. I am interested in writing a praise and worship song on the piano and need direction with coming up with a melody. Thank you!

  • all i can say is to try what its this video. its not easy when you're first starting. it takes a lot of practice to be a songwriter and start getting melodies out. ull get it.

  • Hi Phillip I tried to find you on Facebook. I am interested in writing a song on the piano and need some direction to get started. Thanks!

  • well i'm there :p

  • hey thanks -- this video was cool :)

you explained things clearly and stuff and i was really getting into that song

    Ur awesome :)

Do you have any methods for developing lyrics too?

  • lyrics just kinda come. just like writing a poem i would say

  • can i ask,

when you choose to write a song in say a mojor scale, do all your other chords need to me major?

example : c major (easiest) dose the following chords always need to be major chords

    your awsome btw xx

  • no not at all. if i were playing in C then the majority of chords would indeed be C - F - G but there would be some Am - Dm - Em chords in there as well. all depends on the sound you're lookin for. Play around in "C" with those chords and see what you come up with and let me know if it helps

  • o okay - i kinda know what you mean.

    thanks dude

  • i need help. my left hand cant keep up with my right hand when i change the melody. i dont know how to put them together. can you explain why? im a beginner, so i dont know much about piano. i know how to play chords and keys. thanks.

  • well why is because u just have to practice. it took me a while to play with both hands. practice songs slow until u start to get it, then speed it up. then, eventually ur hands and brain will just start "getting it"

  • The more songs you can play, the more note combinations your brain learns, and the easier you will play both hands together ->

    Experience = Skills.

  • very true

  • what a nice ear. really really nice ive been playing by ear along with two other instrements im barely in high school so thanks it helped a ton

  • awesome. glad I could help! :)

  • im doing this because im trying to be a rapper and i have is a piano so im tryin to make some cool beats

  • well i hope that it can help

  • Hey Nice to hear your doing what i do, Sadly i gave up for a short time vocal lessons after 4 years and songwriting. Im back and have completed 14 songs in total 2 which you can hear on my channel. This isn't to steal people from here but just a thought on what you all think abou the singing technique and production, and lyrics. The Song Dont look back took 4 hrs to write from scratch to end. hope you all enjoy

  • i'll check it out

  • If you're looking for anyone to write lyrics and sing to your songs I'm totally game. I love your style. :D

  • thank you, i'll keep that in mind! :)

  • Dude, I totally always wished I could play piano like you. Beautiful.

  • just takes practice :)

  • Oh, it's terrific mate, I like it. You have a big talent, you should be so proud of yourself! <3!

  • thanks a lot. i appreciate you saying/thinking that

  • wow, amazing! your very talented!

  • thank you!

  • Hey i like your style of playing and I noticed that you really know how to play. You really know your music theory as well which has always been something i have lacked. Well im wondering if you could check out my original song if you have time and help me out a bit if you can. Its fast but simple.

    Thanks.

  • yea its really fast but really creative! it sounds like it could be a soundtrack to a Final Fantasy game or something :)

  • Thanks. I was hoping other pianists wouldn't just shut it down :)

  • that is the same chords as in the Linkin Park song ''in the end''

  • is it? i'll have to check that out...although ive never personally heard the similarity

  • You are seriously great. I've been playing for 9 years and I bet you could totally dominate me! Keep up the awesome work :D Oh, and I have the same keyboard as you! haha

  • haha yea that was an awesome keyboard!! i loved it, but i sold it :p

  • Wow, you're awesome! =)

  • thank you very much

  • Ur cute...=)

  • thank you :p

  • thank you :)

  • The song was great but when u played the final version u looked like u were smelling something

  • haha i always make funny faces when I play :p

  • That lil bit at the end, have you finished the song and posted it on youtube yet?

  • nope...never finished this song

  • so do you mind if i take it and finish it for you? lol

  • well yea i mind if u TAKE it but as far as having permission to use my song and write your ending, then be my guest. post a youtube vid of what u came up with :)

  • sorry not take, that was the wrong word.

  • great!

  • thanks! :)

  • would you suggest a person learn cords before attempting to write a song?

Cuz I really would love to make a song for my girlfriend but I don't know cords. So when I play I sound like a little kid banging on the keys. Would knowing cords fix this?

  • i would say that it helps A LOT!! cause the melody comes from what chord you are currently in and the chord helps you "hear" a melody in a lot of cases as well

  • omg! i was looking for how to write a song on the piano and i have that SAME exact piano!!! lol

  • lol yea i liked that piano a lot. i have a new one now

  • ive been playing for a year and have completely self tought and can write decent stuff..Any tips?

  • just stay with it. ur compositions will get better and better :) stick with it and get feedback from others on what they think you can improve on. i lucked out on that one, in that jim brickman occasionally gives his feedback

  • so when you do a melody do you use the key scale or the chords notes? and how do you know it its major or minor? i know i learened in school but i forgot. and isn't an inversion when you move the top note of the chord to the bottom? idk but if you can you expain it in a video.

    thanks.

    i hope you respond

    -melia

  • you actually use both. you have to know what key the song is in so you know what scale to use but then the melody has to fit whatever chord your in too. it all has to match up (although there are always a couple exceptions :p). a major chord turns into a minor when you flat the "3" of the chord. you are correct on an inversion. you can move the top to the bottom, or the bottom to the top. there are three inversions to every chord :) memorizing all of them will help with composing and playing

  • i watched this video, for inspiration.

    youre a very talent musician.

i wish i could learn to write a song as well as you. i have a couple written. but the thing is i guess everytime i play the song i wrote i change it. lol any suggestions on how to make it the same each time?

  • i mainly remember the chord progression. then the melody pops back in my head or sometimes I still forget so it's nice to have a keyboard that will record (or a camera)

  • Hey Phil! Great as usual!! You inspired me to do some writing of my own.. a left hand tutorial would be great if you have the time to make one though! =)

I found that I can get a melody going no problem in the right hand, but finding just the right rhythm and combination of notes to back it in the left hand has proved itself to be a little more troublesome.

But yeah, still a great video, and congrats on the Jim Brickman performance! That's an awesome opportunity, and you definitely deserve it!

  • Thank you very much :) Yea, I hope that I can find the time when I get back to school to make that tutorial vid. I think it'd help a lot of people

  • that was amazing, iwish i could do this but im too un-co to get both hands playing at once, any tips?

  • i took it small steps at a time. i plan to do a tutorial video on it sometime

  • One word- WOW

That was like Musical Genious stuff right there... i cant beleive you can do that so easily and swiftly

    Jelous =X lol

  • Aww thank you very much. this is truly my passion and i just wanted to try and help other people out :)

  • You're really amazing...and that video helped a lot.

    Thank you!

  • aww thanks :) i'm glad it helped!

  • Your amazing. I'm writing a song right now and I just cant get the verse and the chorus down. I just can't make it flow. I have the intro. I'm also in choir. I'm a tenor and I just love to sing while playing the piano. Since I know a lot of journey songs on piano, I decided to make a song. Also people say I'm an Alto. Any advise?

  • not really. im sorry
