  • Could I use this with an inverter instead of the Grid? Example my Honda inverter generator or the inverter in my camper?

  • @timcat100 yes definitely I have tried it, you would need to make sure that the inverter is pure sinewave but as for the Honda generator I have used this setup with the exact same kipor generator as that is what is powering my caravan look at my other videos of solar panels in the caravan.

  • Is their any easy check to see if the inverter is working? How do I check the voltage of the inverter? The voltage from the panels are between 12 and 20. But I need to double check that? thank you for your help.

  • @seandanm If it is working then the green led’s will flash and it will buzz if it is flashing but really slowly then it is either dull or the solar panels aren’t the right voltage for the inverter. The solar panels are probably 18v and the inverter needs to be 14.28v.

  • Thank you for the reply. I do have a socket monitor like yours, but for me it records no power going into the socket. I have 3 * 100 watt 12V panels . The grid tie inverter I have is the same as yours (300W). The inverter seems to be working, but don't know how much. So either the inverter is not working or the device I have to record the power is not working. So If you could give me the make and model that would be great, I could rule out the inverter or the socket monitor. Thanking you.

  • @seandanm Hi, the electricity meter is a Proteam plug in energy monitor and I would think the problem is with your inverter as 300w of panels in this inverter will kill it, I would not put anymore than 160w of panels on it because it can get really hot. For 300w of panels you want a minimum of 600w inverter. Also have you checked what voltage the panels give off and the voltage of the inverter.

  • Thank you for the video.

Quick Question in the relation to the device that you are using to record the power generated by the inverter. Will any watt meter record the power or are there different types? What is the make and model of the one you are using, Thanking you.

  • @seandanm Hi any meter will record power but what ever you do make sure you get a digital one as the one i have in this video uses most of the power that the panels generate i quickley replaced it with a AMPY 5196 which uses no power at all..i have i digital meter on my 1.3kw system please check out my other videos

  • is that a 12volt grid tie or a 14 volt ??

  • @peeinginthewind hi it is 14-28v

  • is the grid tie inverter wired up straight from the panels or have you got some battery's

  • @caravanman08 This is done directly to the solar panels there are no batteries and I do not recommend using battery with a grid tie inverter unless it is a dump load as it is not efficient and you need lots of extra controllers etc to get it working right.

  • Is this done by Ozzy?

  • @seanm1973 LMAO yes!

  • Good video. Thanks for uploading. Gives people an idea of what they can expect with these units. Just be mindful of radio interference generated when they are operating. Place an AM or shortwave radio nearby and you will see what I mean. You are right about recouping the cost of the panels. It would take many tens of years for the miniscule power bill savings to recoup the panel costs.

But it's interesting and all good fun... Mods for radio interference:

  • @sparktastic1 The AM radio thing is very interesting I would never have thought of that. The panels have been running about a month now and generating 1kwh a day which I did not expect from 2x80w panels. So I have decided it would be a good idea to get some more panels as they only need to generate about 12-15kwh a day to fully power my house. And nice website very interesting I have been looking at the PowerJack inverters on eBay and that is probably what I would use.

  • @aljisonline You are producing excellent Kwh figures for only 160w of panels. Trouble with this stuff is that it can become a little addictive. I started off with only one 60w panel. Now, a few months later I have 600w of panels on my roof and more coming. The great thing about the 300w inverters is you just buy another each time you add more panels. I wouldn't be running much more than your 160w into each 300w inverter anyway as it will only overheat and your conversion efficiency will suffer.

  • @sparktastic1 You should make a video of your solar panels and I have bought an inverter now but it has to come from Germany it’s not the powerjack one but I have also decided to put a small wind turbine up for this I have decided to use a powerjack inverter as I don’t want to spend so much on it. I shall see what happens and hopefully get some more videos of it all.

  • @aljisonline Will try and post some more videos in the next week or so. I purchased the PowerJack 1200w GTI, but it only lasted about half an hour on the test bench, then it blew up! I wasn't even putting much power through it. Anyway I don't know about the UK, but 'down under' the price of electricity is going up by 65% over the next two years! We currently pay about 21c or about 12.5p per Kwh.

Everytime the price goes up I/We save more money on our bill by using these GTI's.

  • @aljisonline I have standard solar panels at work that have been in service since 1985 and they still put out at least 95% of what they did when they were first installed. What other equipment can offer 25-30 years of maintenance free, useful life like that? The way I look at it, the price of electricity will keep rising and I will never not want to reduce my power bills, so I think these things are a good investment no matter how long it takes to pay the gear off.
