  • You've got to be a small percentage of people who are raised Christian and then deconverts. That's rare. I had a Catholic mother but she didn't drill it into me as strongly. I guess that's why I came to question the truth claims of religion earlier on. I didn't want my disbelief to be the result of a secular bubble though, so I do network with Christians and make observations of their ways but I don't directly debate them unless they bring something up to me while trying to evangelize me.

  • @dtoiam I think we're maybe more common than you think. I know a number of atheists in my city alone who were raised in Christian homes.

  • who i am who i am

  • I'm so glad VFX was deconverted!!!!

  • Woah, it's like the point after you joined public school you were saying my story O.o

I did the same thing in listening to metal, which would also make me feel a bit awkward around my super religious family.

  • Only 1 statement. Athiests don't seem to have fallen for the "strong delusion" Unbelievers; Jesus Antichrist's followers have been given. Nice Job!

  • Unbelievers are the ones who are given delusion to believe lies; "Jesus Antichrist". Odd that Atheists arnt deceived so easily. Amorphis

  • @ACLu71 What are you trying to say here? It seems like you're contradicting yourself in the first two statements.

  • god listens.. to slayer thats awesome

  • Enjoyed your video :) I have a similar past and have gone through the same issues...

  • my 'exodus from religion' isn't as severe. no one ever forced religion on me, other than the evangelical family down the street, and of course i found them to be insane. but i suppose my journey was more ...'peaceful' than others.

  • Great

  • As an atheist with feet firmly planted in reality, I must admit there are things I find attractive about believers in spite of the belief. They have a better sense of community, and respect for sacricity. But my respect ends when it comes to perception of reality and understanding of science.

  • @CHAS1422 " I must admit there are things I find attractive about believers in spite of the belief. They have a better sense of community, and respect ."

I'd have to disagree with you on that one.

With the rise of so many former Christians turning Atheist...there is a growing number of "groups" that act very much like a "fellowship" ....they get together, do chairities, & help the enviroment...ALL without the BULLSHIT of Fairytail Friends.

Go to "Meetup" & search in your area.

  • @666xDevilmanx666 I ask is there a genuine need for a "fellowship?" Friends at school, work and around the neighbourhood should be good enough don't you think?

  • @leevan50rrie I don't know.... I've noticed alot of the Ex-Christians I have met all miss the "fellowship" part of it.

I guess it's just the getting together & doing things together that they miss.

Well, good news! You can have all that if you hang around with like-minded people who wont judge you. Then it's all about the fun.

I HATE how uptight Christians are, & how they are "offended" by what others do. I say live & let live...UNLESS you believe in 6,000 year old Earth!!

  • @666xDevilmanx666 Haha fair enough. I'm talking from personal experience because i don't know any ex-Christians myself (although I do know a lot of non-believers).

  • @leevan50rrie Yeah, the great thing is WE can have our cake & eat it too. There are many Atheist Meetup Groups, you just have to search in your area.

They like to hang out, go camping, have some drinks ect.

OH SPEAKING OF DRINKS!!! I just heard the other day that in Dallas, Tx, which I live very close to, actually has a "Church" that serves dollar beers during it's "sermon" ...talk about HYPOCRITICAL BULLSHIT.

I sware, they'll do ANYTHING to put asses in the seats! SHAMELESS!

  • @666xDevilmanx666 ? All Christians are hypocrites to one extent or another - it's in the very nature of the Bible :D but I don't think there's a taboo against drinking is there?

  • @leevan50rrie Yes, there is, sorta. According to the bible, and most Christian groups, drinking is fine. Getting drunk however is not, and is considered sinful (for one reason or another). Some say it's drunkeness even when you're just buzzed. This is a very hard standard to keep. Lets hope the congregation has a lot of breads and restrooms available :) .

  • Thanks for this, looking forward to Part 2. Your story is a very very similar to mine, so I can understand that aspect of it.

  • I really like hearing de-conversion stories. Living in Mississippi, I have a very strong need to know people can open their eyes after being so insulated.

  • @MyPisceanNature DAMN, I think Mississippi is probably worse than Texas when it comes to Bible Thumpers.

    I feel for you.

  • @666xDevilmanx666 I think it is worse off here, because we have a much smaller population. So the variance of the population is a lot higher.

  • @MyPisceanNature Yeah, I can imagine.

    Keep positive...things are changing. ;)

  • @666xDevilmanx666 I know. In high school i knew of one atheist (my younger brother who declared himself so in the 6th grade lol). Now I know of 3 declared atheists, my brother, myself, and my roommate. I know of a couple others whom I have contributed in turning away from Christianity, though they don't consider themselves atheists. One chip in the wall at a time lol.

  • @MyPisceanNature It's nice to know the younger generation has a good head on it's shoulders. ;)

  • @666xDevilmanx666 Not as many in Mississippi, but I am working on that lol.

  • Good personal commentary.

I was never really a practicing Christian but its always interesting to hear other people's deconversion stories because they always have happy endings.

  • I like your story

  • it's crazy how similar our stories are. i can't wait for your next piece.

  • OMFG!!!

    The Believers ARE RIGHT!!!

    IT IS THE DEVIL!!

It makes perfect sense now....I started questioning as soon as I started listening to Heavy Metal, instead of Christian Rock.

How could I have been so blind?? It was staring me in the face the whole time...SATAN DID IT!!

Either that, or Rob Zombie justs sounds better than Stryper...lol ;p

On a serious note...nice vid, looking forward to seeing part two.

    P.S. Welcome to the Real.

  • @666xDevilmanx666 Well from the very beginning the heart of Rock has always been defiance of authority, which isn't exactly a Christian ideal lol.

  • @MyPisceanNature EXACTLY!!

Hell, they had a hissy fit over Elvis's gyrating hips & Chuck Berry's fast guitar playing.

    H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E-S.

The Church is a Business, & like any other business you have to stay up to date & with the times to keep your product hip.

That should prove to everyone that the Church is NOTHING more than a MONEY MAKING CORPORATION.

  • @666xDevilmanx666 Almost anything sounds better than Stryper. The only time I'd rather listen to Stryper would be if they're the only choice against the newer Christian contemporary garbage like Jeremy Camp, David Crowder, and Chris Tomlin.

  • @TaylorX04 I tell you what really hits my funny bone...CHRISTIAN DEATH METAL.

That shit sounds ANYTHING BUT Christian. ...I sware they're so hypocritical it's mind-numbing.

(((IF))) the "WORD OF GOD" was the Truth, it would be able to stand on it's own in it's original form...there would be no reason to "get with the times".

!st "Skaters For Christ", then "Scum of the Earth Church" & Now Demonic "Christian Death Metal".

Just makes it that much clearer what is the Truth.

  • @666xDevilmanx666 Christian Rock made me an atheist. It sucks so fucking baaad!...

    =3

  • @TAz69x I guess they're doing something right then? lol

  • Yeah, I got saved as a young kid as well. In fact I got saved over and over when the preacher would start talking about hell. lol...

  • Thanks for reminding me "why" you are one of my favorite YTubers. Not only are you well informed, you are also as human as a human being can be. I've learned that life's mistakes are very important (whether oneselves fault or someone elses fault), but more important is learning from those mistakes. Unlike you, when I was religious I used to be a horrible person and used to do horrible things to myself, others, and nature itself (I briefly discuss this in my "4 Facts and 1 Lie - Answers" video).

  • Looking forward to the next one really enjoyed this

  • Nice...I didn't realize you were raised fundamentalist,or that you came to your deconversion relatively recently. Well made. Can't wait for part 2.

  • Great quote

  • Your story so far parallels mine exactly. I'm subscribing. Keep up the good work on producing quality videos like this one!

  • Sounds a lot like my story, being a honestly devout believer makes one more likely to question faith.

  • When I first saw this I thought" Oh dear... snoozville..." But it was really well articulated and quite interesting.

Looking forward to the rest of the story.

  • @Yakovich Glad it wasn't too boring, lol. I think from here on it only gets more interesting.

  • @Yakovich A boring TaylorX04 video? You must have confused him for TogetherForPeace or something.

  • Great to hear your journey! It's fascinating how many paths into and out of religion there are.

  • @Evid3nc3 Indeed. I've met other ex-Christian atheists, but their stories are usually still very different from my own. I take your comment as a huge compliment too, coming from the "father" of YouTube deconversion stories. :-)

  • Excellent video! Looking forward to part 2. Deconversion vids are helpful to many people, both those who are walking the same path and those that are ignorant of it. Thanks!

  • ha, i had a similar experience when our youth leader, katie, left the church with her dad who was the interim preacher. that was the start of the dissolution of our church youth group and it left a void big enough for doubt and other worldly passions to eventually seep in.

to this day i wonder if i would be a nonbeliever now if she hadn't left the church.....oh well, cuz im sure as hell happy that it worked out like it did!

  • Is a struggle of faith a hard one? I've never had to face it because I saw right through a lot in early preschool :p They weren't too happy about that. I wouldn't take anyones word for anything nor believe something without reasonable evidence. I did like to sing along though that was great. I had great fun in those days for the socializing and sometimes I miss church for that reason. But when I go back I'm just really creeped out :s

  • @FHomeBrew Yes, when you're a sincere believer, a struggle of faith is very hard. I'll be going into that more in the next episode.

  • @TaylorX04 I'll be looking forward to that. I'll try to take it serious because atm, I cannot imagine it to be that hard to have a fairytale stripped away. It's still like santa clause and the easter bunny to me. The only superficial difference to me is that you'd have to get rid of it yourself in stead of having someone else revealing the truth to you. Hopefully my mind will be changed in the next video so I can be more understanding.

  • A usual, great video!

  • thank you.

  • The fact that your homeschooling made you excel above all kids serves as yet another testimony to the dismal failure of public education.

Anyway, can't wait for your next video in the series! :-)

  • Being born in a secular community by a non religious family, in a country where religion has no place in public forum or politics, I find stories like yours incredibly fascinating. Thanks so much for sharing Taylor! Looking forward to part 2!

  • Great video, Taylor.

We're looking forward to part 2.

  • thanks for sharing man. best medicine against religion is paracletus by deathspell omega, but i guess you know that...

  • A lot of that sounds familiar. Although, being reminded of Audio Adrenaline, Newsboys, and DC Talk took me right back to my time at Messiah College, which, I am trying very hard to forget. Thanks for bringing back those memories. :-P

  • @gz1152 The days when I listened to those bands are ones I'd prefer to forget too, so I'm right there with you, lol.

  • I just wonder why metal listeners wear mostly only black ? Its just why ONLY black ? I can't say anything since i listen mostly to stuff like Trance and such , but seriously why ?

  • @FlowTraceur I never wore only black, I just had a lot of black clothes. Personally, I just think I look best in it, though I do also sometimes wear blue, dark green, and other colors.

  • It's funny, they home-schooled you to give you a better education, yet their beliefs prevented them from teaching you the cornerstone of modern medicine and the biological sciences. Irony!

  • Great video!!

  • Who was frater ravus ?

  • You like metal?

Well, now I like you even more

  • Is there some type of Christian counterpart to the Talmud and Commentaries that Jews have or is it more like a choose your own adventure type of thing? Whenever I have a question I can either refer to the commentaries or play ask-a-Rabbi with one already familiar with them. I notice that (ex-)Christians only seem to ask their priests though.

Is there some type of text that they learn in the monastery that forms the basis of their understandings?

  • @WaysOfMan Well, the closest thing I can think of might be the early church fathers like Irenaeus and Origen, but I think Catholics give them a lot more authority on doctrinal matters than other Christians do. The "basis of understanding" for Christians of all denominations is usually the bible, and they disagree over the meaning and application of some verses.

  • @WaysOfMan Is ask-a-rabbi like whack-a-mole?

  • Very engaging. I look forward to the rest of the story.

  • I'm looking forward to the next parts in this series. What got you interested in studying Judaism more thoroughly and learning the differences between it and Christianity, and why Jews don't believe in Jesus?

  • @GuineaPigDan I'll probably cover some of that in part 2 or 3, but I'd say it was actually wondering why Jews didn't believe in Jesus that led me to study up more on Judaism.

  • "Just have faith". Faith = glorified delusion.

  • I love deconversion stories. It's like giving my skeptical brain a blowjob. xD

  • Nice. I too took an interest in metal back when I was still a Christian and many of my favorite metal bands are still Christian to this day (Demon Hunter in particular). I too listened to Audio Adrenaline and DC Talk although I never really liked Newsboys... this along with Christian bands like Skillet, POD, Pillar and Thousand Foot Krutch. Sounds like you have a fairly similar journey in the music aspect at least.

  • Are those pictures of you at 3:40?

  • @fiend1669 Nope. No pictures of me in here. There is a picture of my old school though.

  • @TaylorX04 Another question, and I know I'm going off topic here, but are still making the " Do You Know Your Bible' series?

  • @fiend1669 Yes. That series may never have an end, with all the material I have to work with.

  • Nice start. looking forward to the rest!

  • Can't wait for Part 2, I was raised in a strict Catholic household, went to Catholic school and mass often as well. When I turned sixteen though, I decided to actually try to read the Bible for myself. Despite never finishing it (I'll get around to it someday) it showed me how generally uneducated I was towards Christianity after just accepting everything my parents, teachers and priest said as truth. I'm an atheist now, a much more happy person, and a skeptic. It's working well so far.

  • @LunaticFringe20 what do you know, starting to read the Bible gets people to stop calling themselves Christians (years later I'm damned near the spot where I think most non-hardcore-fundamentalist are what I'd call "faking it" but they might call faith)

As for me, reading Genesis & Revelation 1st, then starting (but not finishing the rest) was the death knell for any future Christain proselytisers and my "faith." (you had more to read of the 'bible" than me, you being a former Catholic)

  • Dimensions from Beleiver is seriously awesome!!! Their new album Gabriel is pretty good as well:) I was never a christian, but I find deconversion stories fascianating. I'm glad to hear you story, keep it coming!

  • @Ignorantf00l Yeah, I actually still enjoy most of those albums (except Horde). I've heard some pretty negative comments about "Gabriel", but I may check it out sometime anyway.
