  • What a great band the Doobies were and still are. Saw them a couple years ago. Not all bands can maintain the crispness and quality in their playing but the Doobies clearly do and it is a joy to continue to experience such great music live... and on Youtube.

  • Hardworking, honest band. Nice sax here. Nice steel. Nice all around. Memories. Ex-Wife. Saw these guys in 1976 or thereabouts. Doesn't matter.

  • ...and, did it for over 4 measures- again, great solo-

  • who is that wonderful sax player, email me at: pilotfire at sbcglobal dot net

    drummer/firefighter tim andrew

  • This song came out the year I was born- 1973. I really appreciate when I see other people around my age who know the greatness and value of these songs. I love the Doobies!

  • Takes me back to a wonderful period in my life! Those of us who got to live through those days (the 70's) are truly blessed to have had the opportunity to experience a time that will never return. We are the luckiest generation of all and I'm glad we still have the Doobies to remind us of all the good times we had!

  • This is music. Each individual is a professional at his craft!

  • I'd love to hear the original studio version; but truly this is one awesome song!

  • @nightprowlerful

you are listening to what the track sounds like these guys can sing and play for real

  • Sheer ear and eye candy!

  • I love this song! What a blast from the past. It bring such nice memories of the 70s back to me. A band that can play instruments and sing great live as on the album! What a missing art!

  • One of the best live versions of this song !!!! I was at this show. Everything they did was great. They were sooooooo tight.

  • Dear Doobies,

When are you coming back to Wolf Trap?

  • The current lineup of Doobie Brothers is fantastic... as good as any combination they've ever had. They just seem to get better with time, like fine wine.

  • 1972.. as I first heard it on the radio.. Bought the record in 1974..Still brings tears to my eyes this piece of art!

  • One of my favorite bands but I still Would like to see Michael McDonald join them

    sometime.

  • A feast for the ears and soul!

  • One dislike on this song? Are you kidding me? How can you dislike a Doobie's song, especially something as mellow as this song is? I hope the Village he is missing from soon recalls their idiot.

  • How many other bands in the world are as good as these guys. They have stood the test of time and the stand tall. My girlfriends 15 yr old son is now in to the doobies. Of course I had to tell him waht a doobie is.

  • Russo is great, but I miss the moog synth.

  • O.k. I'm going to admit it - I have a "man crush" on Pat Simmons. He is so smooth and talented.

  • Simmons, McPhee, Clapton, Felder.... All greats in my book... Not necessarily in that order.

  • Pat is Great!

  • Thought I'd heard all the Doobie songs that I really like. First time I've heard this 'un and I've gotta' add it to my list!

  • People my age have The Doobie Brothers. Kids nowadays have Lady GaGa and BeiberFever. Damn it's good to be old.

  • @bld9696 You are exactly right. It's the difference between electronic fluff and musical art. There's simply no comparison. People will appreciate The Doobies 200 years from now. Breathtakingly beautiful.

  • @bld9696 and aman!!!!!

  • Such a sweeeet song everyone! The buildup and fallback in the sax solo where they drop back into the tune is soooo incredible!! See Patrick and Tom look over grinning right there. What a groove they all caught there. Beautiful music! Light up a Doobie on that one

  • I'm an old time Doobie fan and the sax kind of grows on you after awhile. I like it!!!

  • Get rid of the sax!!!

  • @Grisostomo06 btw, you left out a 1 from your !!1!.

What a beautiful contribution Marc Russo on sax makes to that rendition of the song, let alone, the horn section arrangements he does for the Doobies. You play that song your way, let them play it theirs: it's awesome.

  • Doobie Brothers = great band!! I've seen them twice and they just put on a great show.

  • this reminds me of driving down I-85 in a '72 mercury flip-top thinking of how i fucked up my relationship. better than a therapist.

  • live/in the studio-doesn't matter. still a great song

  • Cottonbuds2005 -

I don't think that was considered an instrumental. It had words in it, but still an excellent song from The Doobs, a true all-American band for sure. Bless'em all.

  • Such a beautiful song. I heard this song again and just had to pick my guitar up and start learning it!

  • @MystikalPooka Yeah, I just added it to my guitar play list.

  • My opinion, todays kids dont know what real talent is. Bands dont play instruments like they use too......

  • Marc Russo's crystal-clear sax is a cool addition to this great song.

  • I agree 100% with Smokeydog..best album they ever put out...

  • had no idea skunk baxter did lead vocals on this intoxicating tune, he good, too

  • @RonyMexico

That's not Skunk, it's Patrick Simmons on lead vocal.

  • @buckmusial thanks, my bad, still a good tune

  • Someone, please teach me how to play the lead to this song.

  • Anyone who is a musician - I am 45 and when I was young about 19 the general opinion was that you were finished by the time you were 30. But now there seems to have been a sea change so you can now carry on to any age you like. Paul McCartney is 68 and still one of the greatest songwriters ever. The Eagles and Doobies are all in their 60's. Maybe getting older is not such a bad thing after all?

  • @steveevh1 mccartney is a joke and a sellout, lennon made mccartney famous and the dirtbag jackson family gets richer for it

  • Keep coming back to this cut. Can't go more than a few days without the mellow muchness of it. Just plain great.

  • An incrdible song...beautiful!!!

  • Love this song and The Captain and Me Album - Ukiah, is another one I love - These guys really epitomized the 70's

  • @mannythedrummer Yes I agree Ukiah is a wonderful song. Share the Doobies love man !!

  • The Doobie Brothers and fine music.............two of the many joys in a world of trials and tribulation.

  • My favorite Doobie Bros song!

  • Sax man can blow!

  • I LOVE SAX!

  • best harmony i ever heard....fact is..better then what ppl use effects now in the studios and they did this live..amazing

  • There are a lot of guys that do it, But few that do it as well as The Doobs !

  • The Non-Michael McDonald Doobies were among the best bands ever - All these years later it's still true. This is superb!

  • So many wannabes...this is the genuine article. Almost 40 years of the best music that's ever been made. Behold, unto you music is given!!! 5 stars

  • Who said the sax was okay? bye

  • yes-------------sax player is awesome

  • These guys are part of the reason that i became a musician - I still have the album 'The Captain & Me' on cassette dated 1973 (37 years old).. Great to see & hear this music again............

  • True professionals! Hard to find these days! These are REAL musicians.

  • Thanks sooooo much my brother Marvin...who let's me know and listen this great music ...I really falling in love in sax solo of them...Have a wonderful weekend.

  • Are they touring this year?

  • The only downside of Sept. '09's concert at The Oregon State Fair was that they didn't play this gem from "The Captain and Me." Can't wait for their visit this summer to the Edgefield hillside amphitheater in Troutdale, OR.

  • The Captain and Me. What a great album that was containing so many of the

best songs that truly captured the essence of this band. This particular song reminds me of those far out times living in this area . in northern california.

  • @MrSmokeydog Dude, how true! They have it, then and now.

  • @MrSmokeydog I'll drink to that brother..this brings back so many memories!!

  • @MrSmokeydog This song is from 'Stampede'.

  • @Trapkitt uhh...no it isn't...The Captain and Me...

  • @RantingGerman Memory doesn't serve me well sometimes. My bad!

  • @Trapkitt Really Trapkitt this song is from 'Stampede' the album that came out

in 1975 not ' The captain and me' that came out in 1973 I guess I was living

in the past and imagined the song before it was recorded. Hey Bud why dont

you go back and check out the record before you comment from memory.

  • @MrSmokeydog So my memory was wrong on this one. No need to be a complete smart ass, though.

  • @Trapkitt Sorry Man I dont mean to be a jerk but a lot of the people making

comments in response to peoples opinions on you tube about music and

current events can be almost considered aggressive some of the people on here

want to tear your head off for disagreeing with them its ridiculous I guess I

got a little too defensive anyway the Doobies rock and Tommy Johnston is the

best I sure dont miss Michael Mcdonald in the band.

  • @MrSmokeydog --you are both retards...It's from "Live at Wolf Trap" !

Now shake hands with your brother and go to bed. Big week next week.

G'nite Beave, Nite Wally --now,..Ward Cleaver is going to be hard on another kind of Beaver!!

    G'nite all.

  • @rwwagsneb LMAO

  • @MrSmokeydog Tommy was ill with an ulcer and could not do the "Stampede" tour. Dont get me wrong Mike Mac is brilliant but he is NOT the Doobies. Mike Mac took the band over with the help of Skunk Baxter. The Doobies were whittled away but I dont blame Mike Mac. The Doobies are Tom and Pat end of story. Their colaboration will always be the Doobie Brothers. Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons - they ARE the the Dooby Brothers

  • @steveevh1 Yeah Dude I was standing outside of Bill Grahams nightclub in the city The Old Waldorf. Waiting for the gig to start. I cant remember who was playing that night. But this dude walks by holding a Guitar case and I asked him "Hey Man" what band are you with and he smiled and pointed to the back of his shirt. and it

said Tom Johnston Band. It was none other then the man himself what a cool dude.

  • @MrSmokeydog Cheers man you have met "The Johnster" in person wow. What a great musician, he and Pat have wrote some of the greatest songs ever. I am totally jealous of you man. Real stars are humble and have presence not like the affected talentless idiots we call "stars" today.

Love and peace man. Let us reclaim "real" music !!!

Take care of yourself dude, I play guitar. Whatever you do - keep "listening to the music".

Cheers dude - Stevie. (Music brings us together :)

  • @MrSmokeydog You are not a jerk at al man but you have to understand what happend with the band. Tommy could not do the "Stampede" tour so they recruited Mike. Of course the sound totally changed for "Taking it to the Streets" I personally hated it even though it was brilliant. I stil think that "Stampede" is an absolutley brillliant album. "Cheat the hangman" is sublimely brilliant. And "Sweet Maxine" and "Neil's Fandango" are two of the best Doobies songs ever written.

  • @MrSmokeydog Just chill man I have been through losing my uncle colapsing and dying. My uncle who got me intto the Doobies. I totally agree with you, please just share the love man. Michael Macdonals is just incredibly brilliantly talented and I love him but he is not the Doobies. "What a fool Believes" is one of my favorite songs ever and it is brilliant but The Doobie Brothers are Tom and Pat and Tyran end of story XXX

  • @MrSmokeydog SmokeDog, I hear ya , bro. Grew up in Sacto and went to the Bay Area for college. Love that album.

  • @MrSmokeydog I agree I live in Northern England but my Uncle Marty went to San Diego to find work as an engineer when there was no work in England in the 1970's. There was a great fan base of Doobies, Eagles, Jackson Browne etc up here and I got their influences when I was young. In the cold winters of Newcastle in NE of England I had dreams of California, driving an open topped Chevy along the coast ha ha. I have worked hard and have a lovely Jaguar XKR now and dream of the Ventura Highway!! XX

  • @steveevh1 Hell, Ventura may as well be Newcastle man; too much fog up that direction. Come on down to San Diego. That's real California weather and the eye candy isn't bad either! LOL!!

  • @MrSmokeydog The Captain and Me was probably the best Doobies album in terms of songs. But "Vices and Habits " was equal to that and better in a lot of ways and more sophisticated. "Stampede" was also brilliant but Tom's illness led to a change of direction. No blame but they just became Mike Mac's backing band and cracked the pop market - Minute by Minute was a brilliant album, but imagine what they could have acheived with the Doobies sound if Tom had not fell ill.

  • Yeh BreekieMe, It is a song from a man to a lady.

From just 'bout any man to a special lady.

A man may give his smile out in every point of the compass. Once in a long lifetime the, "Smile that I sent out returns with you" it's that specific lady who brought his smile back to him. No other lady could have.

  • What a GREAT old song...my all time favorite band...wish I could find a video of "Texas Lullaby"....

  • Tommy usually introduces it as a "song for the ladies". I don't care, I'm 100% male and it's my most favourite song in the entire world! Oh what a romantic old codger I am!

  • Patrick Simmons guitar and voice...smooth as silk

  • like a warm blanket .... man, what a great song (and sax by Marc Russo)!

  • Comment removed

  • Man...this is sweet....

  • If only Tiran Porter was still in the group.

  • I agree. I really miss his backing vocals.

  • @Slapbass7991 Tiran should still be. His lovely baritone vocals and brilliant bass playing was essential for the Doobies. The essential Doobies will always be Tom, Pat, Tyran and "Little John Hartman". Keep the faith :)

    Steve

  • i miss the guitar solo in the sax solo on this song though, epic.

  • And no Michael MacDonald to ruin the song!!!

  • no kidding, my feeling exactly. i had seen them three times in colorado, in the early seventies. moved to niagara falls and they were coming to buffalo, i was so excited. heard michael mcdonald singing and i was so ticked off tom johnson wasn't with them anymore, had no idea, i left.

  • amen to that.

  • can not believe both they and the Marshall Tucker Band are not in RR H of F

  • captain and me super killer album

  • I have seen them 23 times with all the different line ups and they are all Doobie Brothers........no matter what they connect and have entertained........and endured.....as long as they come to or near NC i will do my best to catch them!.....no matter who is on stage!

  • This is open G tuning for anyone who plays guitar.

This song brings back so many good memories. Why is ABBA in The R&R Hall Of Fame and The Doobie Brothers are not? Love The Doobie Bros.

  • Comment removed

  • hell yeah. i've seen them twice and they were awesome both times.

  • Such a lovely song. It captures the essential nature of the Doobies. Thanks very much for sharing!

  • Marc Russo on Sax, always awesome!

  • Absolute beautiful song. Once in a lifetime lyrics and musical melody. FABULOUS.

  • Gorgeous posting. Damned-near Blu-Ray quality! And if any song deserves it, this one does.

  • I just can"t get over this sax player! He"s great!

  • Dam, me too, I never get tired of this song. Saved my sanity many times as a young man.

    thank thank thank DB!

  • I will never get tired of this song, brings back so many good memoriies.

  • This song shows the awesome diversity of the Doobie Brothers, from the rockin' "Without You" to this slow-paced love melody.

I've always loved the slide guitar in this song.
