Simon does highly contrived, overproduced pop acts. Obviously he wouldn't get this. For me, this was the moment Cook won. He'd established he could sing opera and change up the Beatles, but now he was singing a song nobody had ever heard before and for the first time, as far as the audience was concerned, he was debuting a "David Cook song." It's one thing to sing someone else's trash, but a making an unknown song sound fresh and good is so difficult.

@AEDrummer1 What was strange is that Simon said "it didn't sound like a "winning" song" so surely he was totally unaware of what was going on. Example Blake Lewis performing the "winning" song against Jordin Sparks where the winning song was so much more appropriate for her and not him. So in Season 7, they were allowed to perform their choice of one of the songs that didn't win. The song that won was "Time of My Life" which David released as a single and it quickly went platinum.
