It's very difficult for me not to be entirely dismissive of bible thumping. The story is the same over and over again. "I hit rock bottom and god saved me". You all revel in this as if it's an inspiration. What it says to me is that you don't have the inherent moral ability to keep your own lives in order without the external crutch of "god". Religion is for the wounded who need structure and guidance to make it through life. Since birth I've never felt that. I've spent years going to church...
both baptist and catholic at an earlier age. It all felt like a bunch of frightened people bunching together to put salve on their emotional wounds and make them feel safer. Just because things out there are effed up sometimes, doesn't mean a 2000 year old fictional anthology of works is the answer. We all possess the character within ourselves to do what's right, of our own free will.
As to MK's preaching, I'm fine with however preachy he gets in the confines of his church. I like a lot of his music because he has an ability to write lyrics that are mostly ambiguous enough to have meaning that is universal beyond whatever religion he subscribes to. Those xtian artists that lack that ability, no matter how good they are as artists, will never get my attention because their lyrics will always fail to resonate with me.
@ubicomp Despite what it may have felt like, its hard to generalize even a small group of people. No doubt they were broken people in a hospital for sinners. I see however you consider the gospels and epistles to be fictional and beyond that the Torah and prophets as well. Was there a turning point to lead to this conclusion of rejection? I do implore you to not give up on your seeking, somethings do require faith on our part, even a little, and God does reward those efforts. All the best
@ubicomp Sometimes people don't hit rock bottom before they come to God but are faithful from youth. I think both are in fact inspirational stories. As a churched person you may have heard that He wrote his law on our hearts, also Jesus came to save the sick not the righteous. Everyone needs structure and discipline or else the role of even parents wouldn't be needed, and I would be very happy to find an unwounded person. I used to reason along the same lines so I know where you are coming from
don't judge him on stupid things like cursing. just because he's a christian doesn't mean he doesn't sin like everyone else. there are much more important things to worry about than dropping the A word
You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Romans 2:1
Funnily enough, that verse is for me more than anyone, because I just judged you (Jesusfreak1John17) for judging Mat. Funny how that works, isn't it?
No it doesn't. It says "You who pass judgement on someone else... Because you who pass judgment do the same things." This is simply talking about pointing out each other's faults and failures and highlighting them.
There is a place for accountability, but biblically, it should be private to begin with--not express on YouTube videos where the entire world can see it, and where it is unlikely that Mat Kearney will see it.
I am not really religious at all, but I think it's great Mat believes in something and he should hold onto that. It obviously drives his music, and it makes him a pretty funny guy as well^. So he should believe what he wants to believe. And by the way, he's not as big as Coldplay because he's a solo artist and he hasnt had the same exposure as them. You cant blame his believing in God for why hes not as big as Coldplay. Also, oh yeah, COLDPLAY ARE GODS!!
seeing how you seem to have an open mind (yay) - you should listen to the band anberlin -- especially their songs Fin and An Unwinding Cable Car -- if you like Mat Kearney & Coldplay, you may like them...
I dont think he should have to change any of his beliefs for his career. At the end of the day God is the only thing that matters and his acceptance is all thats wanted. So who cares what people think of him if he talks about God. PEESHAW
"God is all that matters" ... LOL! You really need to quite literally "get a life" because you're wasting this one, and that's all there is. If you want to put blinkers on and ignore evolution because it proves that religion is just nonsense (and genocidal nonsense at that), then it's sad that you're wasting this short life that we get. God didn't create man, it was the other way around.
I'd been wondering for the last few days why Mat hadn't become as huge as Coldplay, considering that his songs are equally brilliant. Now I see why though, with him being a religous nut. He needs to drop the god-bothering if he wants to make anything of his career outside of the Bush-voting idiot sect of middle America.
what is a career in this 80 years of life compared to eternity? Its a vapor. Why put 100% of your focus on what is temporal, a mere shawdow fading away? Its not wise to be so focused on now instead of where you will be for eternity. Today and this 80 years depends on where you will be for eternity. No one is taking their careers',401Ks, their cars only their choices they made. Mat is wise to not give up God. God is first in his life and everything comes second, including his career.
almost every one of the "brilliant" songs you speak of is laced with talk of a higher being. to drop the "God-bothering" and sell out to "make something" of his career would be to cut out the majority, if not all, of his material.
& i find it interesting that of all the combinations of words, names, numbers in the english language available to describe yourself you chose 'matkearneyfan' yet don't even know the basic, extremely (and explicitly) clear subject that he bases his music on.
matkearneyfan -- have an open mind - do you know how many atheist have set out to prove - really prove -- that christianity is a sham and there's no proof of it -- did you know their studies almost always result in them BECOMING christians? IF you have an open mind, you should read the Case For Christ -- its an atheist's story - he got mad when his wife found religion -- and he set out to prove her wrong --
also - you do realize there is historical evidence of Jesus' life & death, right?
I so love to see main stream artist use thier music platform to share the Gospel- its so powerful and it just makes you love thier music and want to support them- He has great humble boldness- what a great guy
I just met Mat here in Birmingham. What a first class guy. To walk out your faith with such boldness is a true testimony to the Power found in Christ! God's work is perfect!Keep up the amazing writing and vocals.
I hear you BigSaplo, I love his music and to find out that he is a Christian makes it all worth while. To see that he is open with his faith and doesn't care about what anybody else says is amazingly inspiring and I hope to follow in his footsteps. Thank you Mat!

I have a question for all my fellow Mat Kearney fans.
He has a song called "Tomorrow" that seems to me to be pretty much obviously about abortion and his view being pro life.
I'm looking for articles about it or preferably a statement from mr. Kearney himself.
If anyone knows anything, could you send me a message?
Thanks and God Bless!
