My English 'side' agrees with German Trudysotherpage :) and now to here - by magic - I can put you into the little playlist I have here (so far only 2 in it that I found) of 'people who have something interesting to say'... :) which you do in a funny way.
Funny, I was just listening to that album today. Random thought: The media tries to blame Dems for not getting anything done, but ignore that Republicans wouldn't even condemn Swift Boaters or Max Cleland attackers (members of their own institution)and demands no accountability from the WH. The media lets the "General Betray Us" story overtake the "spin" the general put on the Surge and moves on from one Bush scandal after another.
The generation that I teach doesn't have a passion for much except the consumption that their parent's generation has fostered. I will say though that the kids who are aware of Dylan and the world/issues around them are the ones who are targeted with labels. These kids are not goth but look much like them. These are the kids who are great to have in my Social Studies classes.
Bob Dylan WASN'T a big mover in this regard. However, JOHN DENVER WAS..and he is the example I followed till his untimely death. The AXIOM 5 concept is a good idea hopefully picking up where John left off. Times are changing again. I agree. Hopefully we all can be part of it and become "rattled" again by the need for change. Great video.
I thank everyone who stands up like you and says what is true instead of joining the bullsh*t-media choir, telling that everything is sooo great.
BTW: This song by Bob Dylan is one of my alltime favorites. I often sang it when I was a street musician and I allways liked that "oh sh*t, I'm caught "-look in the face of, for example, wealthy businessmen passing by... ;-)
There are a lot of bad things. Religious ideologies preventing people from thinking. Huge corporate chains dominating local communities as well as large urban ones. Politics having died. A president that promotes abstinence only programs in HIV ridden parts of Africa. But, the icing on the cake is the 24 hour news networks which systematically destroyed the credibility of what we used to call, the news.
Yepp, if there is really some place like hell, the liar-media people will burn there along with the greedy po-lie-ticians. I would like to watch it, but I don't wanna go to hell ;-)
I wish everbody would ditch the 24-hour news networks and switch to NPR(National Public Radio), one of the increasingly few credible news sources left.
Here we are, trying to go about our daily lives, blind to others' problems, and someone with a voice of reason has the nerve to ask, "Where is our social conscience?"
Regarding your comment on people being preoccupied by all of this "Rich and Famous" and pointlessly following celebrities lives, and whatever short lived marriages they have, I wouldn't be surprised if the government had a part in funding all of that to intentionally distract us from all of the major blemishes they have so kindly put upon our nation...
Somewhat unrelated but, it sickens me to hear that all of the people playing at support events like Live 8 (in particular), etc... (which is supporting poverty in Africa) all of the celebrities and artists are giving a $12,000 gift bag. Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose? How is knowing that you are improving the quality of an entire region not reward enough?
It's great to know that one of the more popular YouTube user is also sending out a good message.
Good to see you, as always, Gpert. The promise of the 60s still haunts many of us, doesn't it? The spirit of the times, and youth, made us believe anything was possible. Human beings have made great progress but so much remains undone...
Gpert, I'm afraid people here are accepting YOUR statements without question. Exactly how are minorities, the aged, and the poor subject to "social injustice". If anything, these 3 groups have special rights. Also, with the advent of the Internet, government and corporations are taken to task like never before. I think the whole premise of your video is faulty... no matter how emotionally appealing it might be. Can you name one recent example of social injustice?
Don't be so narrow with your own definition of 'social injustice'. I think it's an injustice that my mother must work past the age of 65 so that her health insurance will pay for my dad's prescriptions.
Gpert specified social injustice being applied to minorities, the elderly, and the poor... I thought these were poor examples. Also, I don't see how we have been "unjust" to those at Guantanomo Bay. If anything, they're being treated better now than in their own country.
Actually, this split decission sided with the detainees that they had the right to a military trial (courts martial) instead of a special war trial. Far from being a case of injustice, the court ruled in favor of the prinsoners, ensuring them justice.
Regarding your parents... Society has done nothing unjust to your parents. They are where they are by the choices they've made in life. And that's ok. Why is it "society's" responsibility to care for your parents? Why not you? Friends? Their church? Why should I pay for their drugs when I don't even know them???
Zy, Drug development is largely dependent on government sponsored research. American taxpayers end up paying twice: first through their tax dollar support of the National Institutes of Health and of academic research - and second, by paying high prices when they need the drugs. Drug companies make twice the profit of the average Fortune 500 company on the backs of taxpayers and people that need drugs. Houston, we have a problem.....
It is a tragedy that our tax dollars are spent in this way... I agree with your whole-heartedly on that point. But as a free-market captalist, I support drug companies in charging what people are willing to pay. If anything though, the new prescription drug plan shows that our society is out to BENEFIT the poor, not commit injustice against them.
Zyggurat, One example - The death row inmate population is 42% black, but the US black population is only 12%. Hmmm, blacks commit almost one half of all death penalty crimes... I don't think so.
Bonus example - children living in poverty still have many times the risk of high lead exposure compared to white children. That can have a significant effect on their cognitive ability.
We are way too busy watching/reading/browsing Paris Hilton's jail drama. Later, G
Gpert, First, I DO agree with you about Paris Hilton.
At the same time, the statistics you provide do not prove societal injustice. You say "I don't think so" that blacks commit almost half of death penalty crimes. Why? A '96 FBI report shows that 1.7 whites were convicted of manslaughter per 100,000 while for blacks it was 12.6 per 100,000. At that rate, blacks make up MORE than 50% of those convicted of manslaughter (using your own estimate that blacks make up 12% of the population).
Regarding children in poverty. I agree this is tragic, but this is not an example of how society has been "unjust" to these children. No government agency is forcing lead down the throats of poor kids.
Those who are concerned should act... through private initiative and charity. I do not consider it "society's" responsibility to care for my children... and neither should anyone else.
Zy, the harmful effects of lead paint were published as early as 1904. While the rest of the world outlawed lead paint in the early 1900s, the US companies ignored the evidence and kept making lead paint for another 50 years. It took until 1992 before a US law was passed requiring disclosure of known lead paint hazards. This has been an enormous cost to our society intellectually, physically, emotionally, and economically.
You have no disagreement with me that this is tragic. But your original argument was that in "our day" the "poor", "aged", and "minorities" were the recipients of social injustice. I don't see how this applies. And as a kid, I knew about lead paint in the 80's. State laws prevented most homes from having lead paint in the early 70's. It's not like in 1992 this was a bombshell.
I don't think you can teach Zyggart compassion with statistics anymore than the US can shove its brand of 'democracy' down the throats of other countries by gunpoint!
Are you getting younger? You look very healthy, great to see you again, you are one of my favourite people on You Tube, come back to us gpert. Bring back the 60's eh! 95% of the population are poor now. An average house here costs $300,000 with weekly repayments of $500 which is the average wage. The times they are changin, the rich are gettin richer and the poor are gettin poorer. Ciao.
Personally I think the main change, as you hinted, is that the kids today are too self centred to give a toss about changing anything but their mobile phones and other fashion accessories!
You look younger and healthier after your break from the tubes...also i noticed there were no related videos, for your tags 'socialconscience, awareness and beinghuman...LOL!
