I would disagree on the meats. I have a perfectly healthy English Mastiff 7 months old and weighs 90 pounds. I have him on a raw diet raw chicken, veggies, fruit etc. The dog foods you are referring to are processed foods that destroy his insides, imagine this, would you eat Mcdonalds 3 times a day every day and live past 50?? I dont think so. Dogs are canines, and when they were orginally bred were fed raw natural foods.. Hmmm I wonder who introduced science produced foods?? What a myth!
We have a year old mastiff and she's soooo sweet! She also had some seperation anxietymat first so she tore off wall paper we were planning to change anyhow and also dug into the wall. So in that case it was ok because she kind of said, "You want to take down the wallpaper? That's great I'll help while you're gone, it'll be a big surprise!" It was a lot of chunks of wallpaper too. Not only that but she chewed up a couple shoes too and found out how to open doors without knobs. We love her :)
viv1228 is dead right, I hope that no Mastiff owner has to watch their dog go through a twisted bowel. I had a DDB get bloated and require emergency surgery, it is a terrible experience and you should do everything you can to avoid it. Raise their food, try to keep them from eating too fast or directly before exercise. Good luck, beautiful dog.
Not trying to sound mean but you know you don't have to allow your mastiff the chew on your wood work or drool all over everything. Ours does fine. Your boy is beautiful by the way.
As a Mastiff lover and owner, I suggest that you raise his food and water into a feeder that at least a foot or two (mine is two feet) higher because he's going to suck in a lot of air while standing if his food is floor level. You want to try to avoid bloat, which can kill giant breed dogs. There are online pet stores that have feeders for giant breeds. Also I keep a bath towel near his bowl so I can wipe his mouth after he drinks. It really helps keep the drool under control. Good luck.
@Lila196074 Ur an IDIOT.................A PITBULL???? i have an English Mastiff and he's a PERFECT guard dog considering they were bred to guard..learn some history before you go off saying idiotic things...
@chicagobearshowell Pitbulls aren't good guard dogs but neither are English Mastiff. They've been bred away from the original Mastiff which would of been sweet if still around. But today Mastiff is jus big and barks but has nothing to back up their bark.
@nikigurl08 LOL what am i doing replying to you idiots on the internet...... nothing to back up? right...a 260 lb dog would tear apart any intruder...learn something please..ever heard of TRAINING? exactly..and you really said a rottie and a cane corso WOW don't even reply back your as idiotic as the last person.
@chicagobearshowell Its not about the size!! Its the temperment! Most English Mastiff are easy going and aren't weary of strangers. They've been bred away to the pt protection training for them is about useless because it not in their temperment. I originally thought they'd make an awesome guard dog but I did some research and seen they too easy going! Like a great dane, its a gentle giant! They've been bred away from guarding.
@chicagobearshowell I know nothing look at yourself! Jus because a dog barks at ppl and is big, doesn't mean their actually going to stop anyone, especially if that person has a gun or a weapon. ANd English Mastiff are not used in Schultzund training, also know as bite work, because their GENTLE GIANTS!!! I worked w one and its was terrified of a Jack Russel Puppy!
@nikigurl08 NOW you just made yourself look like a fucking idiot any DOG even if it was superdog would get hurt from a gun...........And just because there big and bark? i have an English Mastiff....gentle giants?????????? so u want me to call a rottie a gentle midget? man your fucking stupid stop messaging me back .. English Mastiffs are the perfect guard dogs.
@Lila196074 Pitbull are horrible guard dogs, your either going to get a dog thats going to likes strangers or one that really tears into a person and than your butt gets sued. If you want a guard dogs get a rottie, a shepherd, a dobe, a cane corso or a bullmastiff.
furthermore...do not commit to a mastiff unless you are committed to providing #1 tlc care...they are gentle giants who expect more attention that any loved one...we do not have children...and our dogs are not replacements...a Mastiff deserves to be the #2 pack member...Our girl has only ever soiled twice in the house and has NEVER chewed on anything that is not hers...Mastiffs are incredible companions.
Ohhhh, i hate making multiple comments buuuut...... This is the breed which my fiance and I plan on getting in roughly 6 months. Do you know of a Reputable breeder in ohio? I live in Western NY but i am from Ohio and wouldent mind a visit back home while getting a new dog. If you have any info on that please let me know.
my mother was a vet and i almost cant remember when i didnt have at least 2-3 dogs that were not my own. How you walk them is important especially if he is a nervous chewer, carpet scratcher, etc. Although i dont agree with all of his methods, Cesar Milan (dog whiserer) has alot to offer on the subject of walking. I honestly believe if you practice those methods and try to correct the unwanted behavior properly you will see a dramatic difference. either way, what a sweet heart you have!
What you are describing is a form of separation anxiety. If he tends to cause damage when you leave that can be solved. It amazes me that he gets 2 miles a day and still does this. Do you have any training in dog handleing or are/were you in a training program for Memphis? a 2 mile walk is amazing but if its not also a mental workout for the dog you may not see the benefits you deserve from suck efforts in care.
Can you state what the dog's daily food intake is, because an English Mastiff featured in the news recently was claimed, by his owner, to eat 14 lbs of meat and biscuits each day. Even though it was an adult male, that seems excessive.
He eats 5-7 cups per day. He doesn't eat as much as you might think and feeding a dog meat and biscuits is terrible for the dog. Dogs need a balanced diet. There are plenty of good dog food on the market that can accomodate a healthy diet.

This is just pure lack of obedience...I own an English Mastiff and she is nothing like this...don't give the breed a bad name!

@MemphisMastiff
How is it bad to feed a dog meat? Shouldn't meat be the very basis of dog diet?
