My dad passed away in 1994 from this procedure because the surgeon did not have the proper size graph/tube. It is my understanding they actually sent someone to another hospital to get the proper size part making the total operation time 11 hours, He died that evening in the ICU, he was only 62 years old. Don't go to a VA for this surgery, do your DD and find the best MD and hospital. There is no second chance with this procedure. I wish everyone who must have this done the very best!!
During the surgery ,won't the lower body require blood? If the blood vessel is clamped ,then how can the blood flow and the heart would still be pumping blood and won't it create pressure on the aorta?
@1paar1 They will perform a "by-pass" which means that the blood from the aorta will enter into an external tube which is then connected to the other side of the aorta through a machine; therefore, "by-passing" the aneurysm (which would be at surgical repair during that time). This would maintain the flow of the blood to all organs throughout the surgery.
@1paar1 The lower limb can withstand ischemia for upto 4 hours (the time required for the surgery). The aorta can withstand the high pressures ( over 50% of the world's population suffer from hypertension & they are surviving just fine). Therefore, these 4 hours won't affect the heart.
What I don't get is why does it have to be a certain size to be fixed why can't they fix it when they find it so you don't have to sit and worry if this will be the last day you live. I get so nervous and scared the instant I get pain in my belly its insane to have to live like this!!!
I have this and the surgery looks simple I know hopefully I will get this its not that big now but it will be at some point. This video eases my mind alot!!!
I just had the more invasive open abdominal procedure. The procedure it extremely invasive and I am finding the recuperation period quite painful. I would like to hear from others who have had this surgery to find out how you coped with the recovery period. thanks
@TJFNYC212 I also had the more invasive procedure 8 months ago,I still get pain in my left side it feels like
i have a brick in my side. I also got a blood clot in my leg from the surgery. Im coping by pushing myself to do the things that now give me a problem. My doctor tells me it could a full year to get back to normal if you ever
get back to normal. A lot of people dont survive this operation lots of complications. I hope you are feeling better than 6 months ago.Feel free to REPLY.
@mrjohn395 I am doing pretty well at the 7 month point. My problem is that I still get very exhausted....... and I still have problems some problems with regularity but that has gotten better. I am pretty much pain fear and back to my normal activities: work gym whatever but I get very tired Maybe it is just old age creeping up on me. I hope you get some relief soon Tom
@TJFNYC212 Tom i had some problems with regularity too but not to much now.Have you ever had any blood work done to see if you are deficient in anything. I still get very tired but I have been a smoker for a long time that doesnt help any.I say the same thing maybe its old age but i think this type of operation takes a lot out of anyone its one of the biggest operations there is . Im 64 and live in NJ.Tom I hope you have a good Thanksgiving and feel better hang in there . JOHN
My dad has an abdominal aortic aneurysm in September 2009... we'll never forget it. I've had just got out of my english class, entered my mom's car and he called. He was in his car, parked in front of a store... we got to him and took him to the hospital. No surgery was required, but only God can understand how close he was to leaving us. He spent 10 days in the ICU. Sept 2009 - Feb 2010 is the time of my life i'd like to erase. He now strictly controls his blood pressure levels.
one thing they dont tell you is that there will be a risk for ayneruysm's. my mother had this surgery 10 years ago and now has one in her leg, so we have to have it done again, she is lucking that it was purtruding out of her skin and she was able to catch it before it busted, so be healthy after your surgery, and keep and eye on your stress!
i had this surg. done 2 years ago ever thing went well.i know it sounds scary'but it is something that has to be done.im thankful it was found in time.
ever one should have a check up.i had this surg. plus tripple by pass and also ulcer surg.within 42 day period.that was a whamo for me.
@anitafrancorsi Thank you! Hope your father-in-law's surgery goes well! It's a very good thing the aneurysm was diagnosed early and he is getting treatment.
@cba1307 if an Anerysm Ruptures you will Bleed to Death.....pretty quickly at that given the high volume of blood that goes through that artery....that's why Scheduled surgery on an Anerysm is always better than emergency surgery.
Excellent video, I had a TRIPLE "A" a few months ago, no surgery is required yet. my aorta is 1.5 cm. my dr. said they have to wait and see if my aorta is going to swell within 6 months. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm to young to have these problems.
AND WOW this was an AMAZING surgical procedure! especially for the minimally invasive one, the compressed fabric and metal tube just coming out like that and being strong enough to take over the aorta's job...
but hah...i doubt i can. i'm not the best in chemistry. i do like biology, will be taking AP next year (hopefully i won't die, because the teacher, although extremely good, is very hard i heard). but i guess writing and music, that sort of stuff, is more my thing. :/
This is an amazing medical animation- fingers crossed I never have an abdominal aortic aneurysm but understanding the procedure makes it a little less scary
Awesome 3d medical animation of an abdominal aortic aneurysm! It's very informative in depicting blood flow and the surgical procedures needed to remove it. Way to go nucleus medical art!
how fantastic is this video .. best medical animation I have ever seen ..

Can I ask something? How much this Endovascular aneurysm repair cost? My granny has AAA and I don't really have any idea how much it cost.
