Now this man had the X factor in bucket loads never will we see his like again, brilliant full of talent and love for his people. R I P GEORGE FORMBY.
My only claim to fame is that when l was thirteen l had George all to myself for an hour and a half. My dad,a local motor mechanic, was called out one evening to tow in and fix a Bentley that had broken down just outside Warrington..it was george travelling north with beryl. When l heard who it was l legged it over to see him. We sat on a pile of tyres in the garage and george did most of the talking. Beryl never once left the back seat of the car. l got his autograph though. He was a nice chap.
@BOT101st Thanks for that...lsn't it odd that it's only in recent years that l've come to realise how fortunate l was to have met George. Everyone should get the chance to meet someone famous just once. because when they've gone...they've gone !
@BOT101st Good grief...lt was 1955 and l was just 13 then.l'm an old man now. However, l remember l had an broken arm in a cast and he asked me how it happened. He also asked which school l went to,and it turns out that it was a few hundred yards from his very first appearance on stage, Earlestown Hippodrome which became our local cinema some years after. He asked if l had been to Blackpool and if l had seen him there, which l hadn't. l remember he had a big golden Labrador with him. That's it !
George was born in Wigan and moved, with his family to Warrington at some point during his father's rise to fame. When George himself became famous he had a house, with Beryl, in Blackpool. He was living here at the time of his death, although Beryl had died some little while before. George was buried back in Warrington, in the family grave, where his father lie. It is also where his mother is now buried, having lived to the age of 100. I have no knowledge of any service in Liverpool.l.
@Nojnotpu Thank you for that, very informative. Yes, the Liverpool funeral service was a surprise to me too. It isn't just rumour, it is documented on various tribute sites, but no one states why this would be. Oh well, off now, turned out nice again.
George wrote a lot his songs with a friend by the name of , Eddie Latta ( You can see the name on George's old 78rpm records,, or later complilation LP's) Eddie was a local Warrington undertaker and he turned out to be the one who conducted George's funeral when he died.
@Nojnotpu Thank you for that. Now, something that's puzzled me for years. Why was George's funeral service held in Liverpool? I know he was buried in or near his original home town (which is NOT Blackpool, other folks), but this was after a service in Aigburth, Liverpool. Any ideas?
@Joshua12345 Bruce Williams was the funeral director for George. Bruce also wrote some of Georges biggest hits under the name of "Eddie Latta" The funeral home was on smithdown road liverpool. so maybe because George and Bruce Williams had been long time friends this is the reason why the funeral started off in liverpool.
Does anyone know of the old song "out in the Middle East",also sung by George Formby?I am not sure who recorded it back in the 30's.I so enjoy this music and lyrics.
was my Actual Father,a lot of Jokes about this in My Youth, also by My ½ Brother Ola Kallmyr, who actually saw when and where I was Concieved on the Loft of Knut and Olgas Big Farming House in Lyngstad/Eide,about 35kilometer North West-Molde,Rosernes By in NORWAY

My BIOLOGICAL GRANDFATHER-the son of George Formby Senior,George Formby, his son with Olga Linset, became My Biological Father,Mr.Farmer OSCAR ANGEL KALLMYR,the Brother of my Mothers husband(Helge),was my Actual Father,a lot of Jokes about this in My Youth, also by My ½ Brother Ola Kallmyr, who actually saw when and where I was Concieved on the Loft of Knut and Olgas Big Farming House in Lyngstad/Eide,
Hey ianclive, that wouldnt happen, history just fits together like a jigsaw, any changes have already happend, the only one to notice the difference would be the one who went back in time and changed history
He did manage to go against his wife's wishes in the film "Trouble Brewing" - at the end of that film, he and the lead female actually get a proper embrace and a full-on kiss!
brilliant goerge, in jools hollads autobiography he tells a story of him popping round to george harrisons house bob dylan turns up and they watch a goerge fornby film, i so want to be there, when i build my time machine after killing hitler in 1925 i'll pop round
this guy below is real tacky. uses every formby movie to promote himself. yeah, he's a good player, but this guerilla promo tactic is really tacky! I don't knw why he works so hard to get people to see his one (and only) video.
George wrote most, but not all, of his songs, as for this one, not sure, but I am sure there is somewhere which states who wrote what but my guess is this is one of his own, well, part of the lyrics anyway, as the tune and the chorus were borrowed.
@Joshua12345 - He didn't write any of his songs, they were all written for him and he would also co write. The best were written by Harry Gifford & Fred E. Cliffe.
@Joshua12345 George had nothing to do with the writing of the songs, if anything at all. There is a 1971 documentary with Eddy Waring and the man who wrote most of George's hits categorically states that George never helped with the writing of any of the songs. The "star" got his name down as co-writer so that he could claim more money. One song, Leaning on a Lamp-post was written by Noel Gay and George's wife Beryl went round to see him to try and get him to give the rights to the song away.
lulu dot tv does have all 20 of the films he made as an adult. Free to watch online or download. The only one missing is one he made when he was 15 years old. He truly did rock!
Now this man had the X factor in bucket loads never will we see his like again, brilliant full of talent and love for his people. R I P GEORGE FORMBY.

In case you were wondering about 'heard the Gypsy's warning': it was evidently an old chestnut of a popular song about not trusting men:
