This whole fight is awfully stiff choreography. Liston never throws his haymaker right unless he is out of range or uses it in futile gesture like a club - the kind of move you see in professional wrestling. The whole something-in-my-eyes charade played out to create the impression of heroic achievement. This is a sham. Sonny took a dive. He phoned in the entire performance. And the way it ended - just absolutely dreadful.
I came here to remember Angelo Dundee, who died today at age 90. At 31:16 Clay, his eyes burning from the rosin Liston had put on his gloves to blind the young challenger with, is begging Dundee to cut off the gloves and let him quit. Watch as Dundee washes out his young protege's eyes, tells him to be a man and sends him back out to become Muhammad Ali, the Greatest. Rest in Peace, Angelo. You were a mensch.
Sonny Liston was a legend & a fearsome fighter. He inspired many great boxers after him (George Foreman & Mike Tyson for example) & his style has been adapted countless times by millions & millions of boxers. But there is no doubt that Muhammad Ali is The Greatest of All Time. His jab, hook, uppercut, technique, endurance, psychology. It just amazing, a true Champion & the man that made boxing into what it is today. One of the greatest sports ever.
There's no doubt Liston was a great fighter, but Ali totally dominated him. You can see in the middle of round 3 Liston has lost his punching power; he's punching without power, despite his flurries towards the end. I think the announcer was off when he said Clay was hurt, since there was no power to S's punches by then; he was arm weary already. Nothing is more painful, like Ali said, than punching air, which S was doing in 2 1/2 rounds. This is a great post, btw! Thanks.
Joe Lous was flat footed, sonny lisbon is flat footed me and sugar ray and too damn pretty luv that part... GOAT.

This would have been even better if they had the commentary by Harry Carpenter. I can only find it in clips.

Glad Ali beat his ass. Liston was a cheater, too.

Liston was a bully; he quite like a bitch.

Ali could take a good shot even then. Liston nailed him a couple of times with good hooks that would have floored most fighters.
