It may be clearer to say that the underlying scheme is Welsh as formerly spoken in England, rather than 'English', overlaid with a repeating scheme of two rhyming pairs followed by a multiple of 5 (5=pump, 10=deg, 15=pymtheg, 20=ugain in Welsh), so at 3/4 you attempt to rhyme 'tri' (3) and 'pedwar' (4) and end up with forms like 'tethera/lethera'. Other pairs have obviously developed over some 15 centuries and may or may not ('hovera/covera') be based on the original words.

It's extremely similar to Welsh, which also counts in base twenty. The words are also very similar: Five is Pump, but pronounced pimp; Ten is Deg which is also pronounced like dik; Fifteen is Pumtheg rather then bumfit. But it's still almost the same- and I can tell you the reason 15 is pumtheg is because it's a portmaneau of pump and deg (five and ten), but the 'deg' is mutated into 'dd' due to Welsh's language rules. 'dd' is the same as 'th' almost, and so we get pumtheg!

That's really interesting... though I wouldn't call this language 'English'; it's more like 'Welsh'. I know Cumbrian shepherds used to use this system and Cumbria was part of what was known as 'Yr Hen Gogledd', 'The Old North', a region, like Wales or Cornwall, of Brythonic Celtic speakers, isolated by the influx of Germanic speakers further to the East. @numberphile I admit I tittered at bumfit! However apart from the stones we still count in a very similar fashion - 0 to 19 each have their own names and then we adopt multipliers of ten. So in essence we incorporate the base 20 nomenclature within a decimal system each and every day.
