Pointless now. Youtube fixed their player. Still looks like ass on my HD 4850 compared to the PS3. It's like forcing some shitty linear filter.

Wow you're a lifesaver! I shoot my videos in 40p, but sometimes when I upload them to YouTube, It doesn't give me the option of 480p. So doing this actually permanetly keeps my video in HQ :)

You've got to remember that any video uploaded to youtube is automatically converted to an FLV to be be compatible with the youtube flash based player, therefore video quality is never going to be as good as the original

I understand the How-to, but can anyone explain the reasoning behind those characters? why 18 or fmt for example. That's what I'm curious about, is there some logic in the code that might explain it? It would be something cool to find out.

great! this really works, thanks! It sucks so damn much that you cannot use the "I have a good connection. Always play videos in the highest quality available" option anymore, by default. only the two other options are left. Way to make it worse.

I think on some videos it doesn't work because it could have been uploaded as an .flv file or it originally was uploaded with a low bit rate, meaning you would not see a difference with different formats

I was not happy how my video played back on youtube. Looked great before I uploaded it. So I searched for a way to improve it. Yes, &fmt=18 worked great!

I hope other people do this so they can see videos the way they should.

Now figure out a way to just have that added to the url permanently. lol.

Thanks for your great tutorials.... Have you figured out what that extra "parameter" actually instructs the video playback to do? I know these videos are displayed on youtube as .FLV (flash) video format.

So, is it your hunch that "fmt" stands for format... and that maybe there are various fine-tuning commands that can tell the flash video how to render the file during playback?

I believe it's "format". I'm not sure what 18 stands for, but once you put it on there it activates a line of text with a hyperlink (directly under the video) that says, "Watch this video in lower quality for faster playback." I will continue to play with it to see what other functions may be available. :)
