I know so because I've been to two live performances of CATS done by two entirely different theater groups. The first was done by a local one and the second was done by Broadway.

The main plot (that not many people understand) is that the Jellicles are explaining what a Jellicle is. From the very beginning ("What is a Jellicle Cat?") to the finale ("You've heard of several kinds of cat..." "You've learned enough to take the view - the cats are very much like you. You've seen us both at work and games, and learned about our proper names, our habits and our habitat...")

@Shayde1653 The backround story is the Grizabella story. It doesn't actually have anything to do with the rest of the play, but has its moments and is kinda always there. I assume you know THAT story, but if you don't, just tell me and I'll explain it!

And, yeah, it's the third story-ish thing that kinda just holds the whole thing together: It's the Jellicle Ball. For an explanation of THAT just listen to Munkustrap at 5:04 in The Naming of Cats! ;)

The thing is, every cat has their OWN "plot" going on during the play; for example, Demeter is recovering from an abusive relationship with Macavity, Victoria is generally believed to be coming of age, Munkustrap is trying very hard to make sure the annual Ball goes according to plan (and not altogether succeeding)...the play is really about the characters and their relations, if that helps any.
