lol hm. first comment in awhile. I think i am going to pick on you 'ACE PILOT C172' haha. first of all this is in SAN, theres blast fences for a damn reason. MD80's still out do a380's all day. fuck Airbus and fuck the a380. I'm an A&P mechanic & pilot, i know JT8-D's without noise suppressors smash on those fuckin dinky ass 4 engines on that a380. come to me after u stant behind a Boeing 727 with no noise suppressor or hush kit with throttles full to/ga. u dont know.

nice vid. reminds me of the time when i used to live in ocean beach - where all those planes have to pass right after take off. you could always recognize the md-80's by their rocket-like sound and beeing at least twice as loud as all the other planes :)

The jet blast on those things aint no joke. I work for AA and being on the ramp with a super 80's engine running is um... windy lol. Seeing these bad boys take off is awesome. They take off with a high angle of attack and the engines are soo loud! You know when these planes take to the sky.

@josh12291 Great vid dude, yeah the MD-80s with -219s have that classic JT8D rumble and a little of the crackle of the 727's, 737s, DC-9s just a little more muted. Awesome memories being at the airport and feeling my whole body quake as a plane flew overhead and later on car alarms going off in the parking decks. thanks bro!

I used to plane watch at San Fran. Int'l at the observation point next to runway 1R. Yep, when those MD-80's takeoff you can feel the thundering full throttle in your chest. Pretty damn exhilarating! Like a heart attack indeed. Same with the Boeing 727's being that they have almost the same engine types.

I would agree it is insane. there arent too many places you can actually get that close while an md-80 is taking off. Its by far the loudest commercial jet around. Any who doesnt agree probably doesnt even fly something bigger than a 172

AA MD83's and DL MD88's can rival a typical 727 on takeoff, the 727 still reigns king though. An MD-11 with PW engines at max takeoff weight will indeed leave your ears ringing...very surprising for a modern widebody to be "that" loud.

Usually it's a lot louder than the camera is trying to tell you. If you were to go to that spot and stand behind, some of the younger kids would have to cover their ears. Of course, more recent models of planes are much quieter, these jets are very old and the jet engines just aren't as quiet as your normal GE90-155b on your 777-300ER, or your Trent 900 Engines on your A380.

That isn't the biggest plane I've seen in SAN, figuring I've lived in San Diego my whole life. I've seen 747's there, and we normally receive 757's and 767's in addition to the MD-80's and 737's.
