I've just check this track out because i was reading about Gilbert O'Sullivan, i know well all have our tastes in music but this is close to being the biggest pile of crap i've ever heard....and i've heard some crap in my time!!
Yes i know songs have been sampled many times over the years...but there are certain songs(classic's)that should NOT be touched....including O'Sullivan's classic.
i do think people have the right to say "no you cant use that sample" or "pay me". but damn man. theres no need to be a cunt about it, just settle it out of court with a few grand. but gilbert o sullivan decides he is gonna drag down the entire genre. i respect any artist that has a huge impact on music whether i like their stuff or not, but this guy basically killed the way we use samples in hip hop. imagine how many more mecca and the soul brothers we would have if it wasnt for one guys greed
everyone samples, its been done for years, not just in hip hop. metallica have sampled, NIN do it. gilbert o sullivan never stopped the song, because i just listened to it. but they did change the course of hip hop for greed. people like pete rock, beastie boys, they used to use like 10 samples in a song before that shit, now you cant even get one cleared. no one owns the sounds that an instrument makes. i could go get the same instrument they had, replay it myself, and say it was a coincidence
@mikeehokkaido21 I prefer the RJD2 version from "Your Face or Your Kneecaps" (3rd track) which, by the way did not create such a copyright scandal... I think Gilbert O'Sullivan freaked about the title and the lyrics but not about sampling.
I love reading comments from other people who have watched a song the same as I did. Particularly, a rare classic, back in the day - unique - track like this.
Like it hate, sampled or not sampled, this is pure Hip Hop my friends - poetry to a beat. Rapper and a DJ telling a story. Won't compare it to anyone else because a track or an artist like this doesn't require comparision.
I can understand people get mad over sampling, but then again, if it wasn't for sample, thousands upon millions of hip hop fans wouldn't have been introduced to classic music, because when we hear a good sample, we're like daaaamn, what is that song? then we check out the original and dig it. it's all about spreading music.
This is one of the most famous sampling lawsuits. Gilbert O'Sullivan went ballistic and demanded that Warner Bros. recall every unsold copy of the album and destroy them. "
I Need a Haircut" was then re-released without the offending track. Biz could've faced prison time and the judge's ruling made a precedent for sampling.
Biz told XXL some years back that he had a verbal agreement with O'Sullivan's brother to sample the song. Dude should've got that permission in writing!
Fuck Gilbert O'Sullivan, stupid son of a bitch ruined it completely. James Brown was sampled 100000 times every year yet he never ever sued any of the rappers. Funkadelic still gets sampled to this day and is paid respect but instead of suing every one of them, George Clinton and company actually command the rappers for the amount of respect.
The dictionary definition of how to take a bad song and make it good. Fuck you, Gilbert O'Sullivan! Mad props to those who own the original album! Peace.
Don't know about you but I'd love it if he showed up in my neighbor hood, just be him and maybe kick a show or just kick back and share the stories of the ways. Biz will for ever educate
@DJdoubleAy22 its ugh .....called sampling....and ugh....its uhm what formed hip hop,.... thousands and thousands of songs are sampled and the new sampling laws are ridiculous
I never understood why O'Sullivan leaped on the opportunity to take down this song, seeing as how the sound byte isn't remotely similar to O'Sullivan's use of the lyrics "alone again, naturally". It doesn't sound the same, nor is it used in similar context, nor is the music similar. He literally freaked out because Biz used the lyrics "alone again, naturally" but regardless, anyone could use those lyrics as they do not TRULY pertain or should be bound to O'Sullivan's song at all. what an ass.
@SolasidoBR He stole the piano part wholesale. I think O'Sullivan had every right to sue his ass. I'm sure he wasn't all too bothered about the money, but it's the principle, isn't it?
@MrZygoticmynci Well, I'm not too sure. I'm aware that the song used all of the chords from O'sullivan, but the chord progression sounds different, I may be wrong though. There's a fine line between spoofing and stealing. I feel like there is nothing Biz used that was absolutely wholesale from O'sullivan's song, then again, I never watched the court case, so I don't know the evidence that was used in O'sullivan's accusations.
@SolasidoBR Ok, wholesale suggested a bigger rip-off, so I retract that. However, the piano riff that underlines the whole song is from the introduction. Maybe O'Sullivan was wise to step in before this whole sampling malarky got out of hand? Regardless, both songs are ace.
You do realize old school hip-hop sampled other people's song ALL THE TIME (before this incidence). Nobody really thought about the legal actions before this. O'Sullivan is kind of a bitch honestly. But Biz was also specifically denied the rights to use this specific sample, so he was pretty dumb as well.
@NippleBerry O'Sullivan is kind of a bitch? More like a limey Brit, Irish potato eat'n twat rag. "specifically denied the rights to use this specific sample", well, %&@# HIM! Who the hell does he think he is anyway? Johan Sebastian F&$@ing Bach? He was a 1 hit wonder, from the 70's, big deal. I never liked his music anyway. Granted he should definitely have been paid for the sample & all, but hey......bottom line.........nobody likes a whiny Brit.
After all said and done, After the landmark case and millions of dollars Biz's rendition of this songis still heard right here on youtube. Gilbert you dumbass!!!!
this is just so god damn funky... O'Sullivan doesn't deserve credit. This takes the same melody sure, but this has a funky style to it. O'Sullivan plays it in a different context... a boring one. If you ask me context is more artistically important than who simply wrote the melody. It still takes an artful eye to put it together like this

besides Kanye, whom you know is sampling.
