For vets who want to read on Dr. W, O. Belfield's cure for distemper:
Belfield, WO 1967, 'Vitamin C in treatment of canine and feline distemper complex.' Veterinary Medicine, Small Animal Clinician : Vm, Sac, vol. 62, no. 4, pp. 345-8.
1.)Dr. Wendell O. Belfield, DVM, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, is leading the way in revolutionizing veterinary practises. He uses large doses sodium ascorbate therapy to treat distemper. The dose level was begun at one-half gram per pound of body weight(yes, that's correct) administered intravenously twice daily. With dosages this high, Dr. Belfield uses the sodium ascorbate form of Vitamin C as opposed to the ascorbic acid form.
2.) The intravenous preparations used were made from crystals to avoid sodium bisulphate, a preservative in the commercially available intravenous products, which can cause nerve problems when given at high dosages. He stressed that once this process was started NOT TO INTERRUPT IT FOR ANY REASON not even if the pet appeared to be feeling better or fully recovered before the five days were up because he says "treatment broken off in the middle permits the virus ot take the offensive again."
u never hav to feel like ur only choice is putting ur animal to sleep...my dog roxanne is currently diagnosed with distemper but she is currently on antibiotics an i feed her wet food mixed with dry food an she eats it all usually an i giv her pedialite to drink..its better than water..now she is eating an drinking on her own...an she is almost back to how she use to be...with hope an love an prayers ur animal can overcome!...fuck tht bullshit of putting them to sleep...thts never an option 2 me
@aubryhearts1 Im sure of that nara my dog who is in the video recover from the Distemper without any neurological damage she's a really happy dog but put her to sleep never was in my mind i did whatever it takes to take her up and now there she is!!!!! Hope your dog recovers soon!
@mokotropik well hes on phenobarbital (i hoped i spelled that right) and hes had about 10 seizures in a little over 4 years. i hope ur pup is okay! (im sorry if she has passed) i had 1 other dog that took a seizure that lasted forever and he was outside. he slobbered so much he was covered in mud. in the family of dogs, willie (my present dog) was the nephew of wiley (slobbery muddy dog) coincidence?
The sadness would have really continued with my dog if he had survived distemper because the only thing he really loved doing was swimming in the surf and in the lagoon and playing with all the children who would throw the coke bottle for him. And he got so sick with the Distemper that god knows how he would have shaped up if he had pulled out of it. A horrific way to watch your dog die but when you love something that much you cant bring yourself to do any other than give him chance to survive
My husband found a boxer mix about 2 months ago, Our vet thinks that the dog was treated for distemper but too late so he has neurological damage, his front legs are a little num and he has a twitch. probably that is why they abandoned him, we took him in he was 8 months and just 32lbs. we have been taking care of him and today he weights 49lbs. He is in no pain and as happy as he could be. He found his Forever Home.
i know the pain of having an ill pet, and feeling almost helpless. my wishes are with you always. you seem like a loving pet owner. i hope only that your dog may have a wonderfull and fufilling life despite this unfortunate occourance.
epilepsy is common in most dogs. Most of the time it is just epilepsy- other times it can be brain traumas or tumours, parasites, lack of oxygen supply, which are more serious.
my weimaraner is epileptic. We first saw evidence at 3yrs. We started seeing them happen ourselves at about 5yrs. He is now 7 and he is on 6 tablets per day of Phenobarbital, which the vet said is reasonably low for him and won't cause future liver problems etc..He still has seizures but they are very very mild (1-3mins).He doesn't have the parasitical virus, the vet currently thinks it is just epilepsy. He has also been given another drug called Gentitrix (aka Potassium Bromide)
i havent done research myself, but people have told me that breeding for certain traits hurts dogs (like inbreeding would us). if you guys care about dogs so much, or animals in general, why dont you start letting God take care of breeding. let it happen naturally, to produce strong healthy dogs.
or stop getting dogs that are bred for certain traits. the less demand, then the less they'll supply and the less dogs that need to suffer
Earlier today, my dog was just diagnosed with skin and respiratory canine distemper.. as of today neurogical distemper hasn't hit her yet (hopefully) . she was given doses of medicines.. There are no seizures yet. when were you able to know your dog's cases?
I had a 3-month old dachschund named Franky (Frankfurter) and he went nuts one day and we had to put him to sleep. We named our new dog after him. What pisses me off is that someone has been digging him up at night.
my dog die from distemper she was a labrador she had 4 months when i found out she had it and the disease already advance and she was having a lots of seizures so i had to put her to sleep and still hurts me not seeing her anymore even tho it was little time i was with her i miss her, her name was bella and she was beautiful
It makes me tear up to watch that poor animal suffer...Shes welping for help and her soft sweet eyes are just begging for peace...Im truly sorry...I ope she gets better and lives a long hppy life.
Pls tell me your email address cause my puppy is suffering Canine Distemper and i want to know what did u do that your dog survive we are hoping that our puppy survive his distemper pls reply.
Contact doctor Palmquist at the Centinela Animal Hospital in Inglewood Ca. He is the vet who treated Jack in the video mentioned in the previous comment. Our 4 month old puppy Daisy, who we adopted 2 weeks ago from a shelter has been diagnosed with distemper, so we drove 60 miles to see Dr. Palmquist in LA and he is an amazing person. If you dont live near LA, call them, they will help you the best that they can. There is life after CDV, give your dog chance, they will love you for it.
Lovely pup! I had a dog with Sezuires but not caused from Distemper. My dog had it because of her breed i think. She passed away on Nov 2nd 08. Sezuires are a scary thing to watch. But i would talk to my dog when she had them. do you?
Because there is alway hope and some people maybe dont know what is happening to their dogs, mine survived and now is healthy dog so this is a video that tells you that you can always have hope to save someone you love.
I am sorry to tell you this, but your dog is not "healthy" once surviving canine distemper virus. They never clear the virus, but it lies dormant. Your dog is at serious risk of virus reactivation and neurological signs often seen later in life.
distemper is such a cruel disease which your dog is exhibiting right here. Which is why most puppies are vaccinated from the cruel effect of the brain disease. Thank you for educating us the fact that no seizures are alike. You have a beautiful girl and you are so kind enough to help her treat her illness. Many thoughts and prayer for your dog, Nara and you.
I send my deepest respect to your dog. My Siberian Husky Aaleiah died of this virus and she had lots of frequent seizures I loved her she was my baby And I miss her so much she thought me so much. I know how you feel But trust me she is watching down on you and is in a better place
My MINI(poodle)-2 months old. , After i bought her from dog breeder, i sent her to a vet on the next day, because she having flu and cough. According to the vet, she was diagnosed with canine distemper virus. I'm really worried about her. Can can anyone help?
I'm glad Nara is doing better.
