As an example that I use in colleges and universities as to how "fairness" is often not prevalent in the material realm, I note the difference between an amazingly prolific and genius band like The Dan who has only sold in total 30 million albums world wide while Britney Spears does nearly that with one album. Thus, my example takes hold.
@drhey19 They never made "studio videos" (ala MTv-like) but did do live stuff (Kirshner's "Rock Concert", "Midnight Special"). Brings back some memories.
Steely Dan on the 1974 tour that supported the Pretzel Logic album. The last old school tour of the Dan. He appeared on this album and the next, Katy Lied, before moving on to the Doobies with ex-Dan virtuoso, Skunk Baxter.
People are complaining about DF's voice, but he is still kickin' emotionally. If Fagen and Becker never sing a note again, their legacy in pop music is like Mt. Everest. AJA has to be-- from this musician's stand-point--one of the most far-reaching, influential pop music recordings of the last 50 years.
@dogofman Yeah, I know... I've been a professional jazz pianist and composer for 45 years... I used that categorization as a loose identifyer, because so many people can't quantify what the Dan does. Truth to tell, one can't characterize what these guys do. My friend, Jim Keltner, has intersting stories of the original session for Aja.
@raggabass : You couldn't be more wrong... Dan was never "the norm for the day"... give me one single band that did what Dan did, I defy you!! And obsolete?? Wish that shit into the cornfield, dummy!! 99% of the musicians out there (particularly pop musicians) have yet to approach catching up to 'em. Devo was cute in a silly way, but the mighty Dan could play 'em under the table. They just might be over your head...
Love the band. Love Fagan. Love the tune. Saw this tour in Nashville. One of the best live shows of my life.
But sorry, Fagan is out of tune on this performance and appears to be having vocal problems and the overall beat seems to drag. Anyone can have a bad night. Someone just decided to post this one.
They were supposed to go through a series of names starting with names like Penis Whip and Leather Canary and settled with Steely Dan which was the name of a steam powered dildo in Naked Lunch.
Could someone tell me what he's playing at the start of this video?? lol

kja427 1 year ago
@kja427 Steely Dan has never made music videos for any of their songs, but Donald made videos for his songs "New Frountier" and "Tomorrow's Girls."

Michael M. was actually a member of
Steely Dan on the 1974 tour that supported the Pretzel Logic album. The last old school tour of the Dan. He appeared on this album and the next, Katy Lied, before moving on to the Doobies with ex-Dan virtuoso, Skunk Baxter.

How the hell did this band make it into the Rock Hall of Fame and a band like DEVO can't??
Steely Dan's music was the norm for that day and is obsolete today. Devo's music and influence can be heard in today's music.

This man has more talent in his pinkie than most people have in their entire body...
Steely Dan is simply the best American band of all time.

if not Steely Dan then who? I'd say Frank Zappa.

@Twilk88 Yo Twilk88, They're great for sure, But I'm pretty fond of Bela fleck and the Flecktones, they are also great.
bigwave1021 1 year ago
@bigwave1021 let me qualify that, I meant in a different style, But just as great an American band.

@Twilk88 Never have, nor will they (Fagen and Baxter) ever, get the credit they're due.

One of the great bands of the 70's & 80's. For trivia's sake, look up how they got their name. Donald Fagan is great!
