  • i think this is the best version i heard of cantaloupe island ever. no arguing.

  • someone needs to resurrect some clavinets lol.

  • Can you get the sample for nord stage.

  • @numanuma20 What do you mean? Rhodes sounds is exactly what the Nord Stage already does best.

  • That Bass player is Brian Bromberg

  • Keys left to right=Jeff Lorber, David Benoit and George Duke. Sax=Eric marienthal-----the rest...?

  • Jeff Lorber on a Rhodes and Eric Marienthal on Sax, met them on a flight to LA once :)

  • The rhodes piano is a very strange and mysterious instrument. To me, there is a fine line between what sounds cheesy and what sounds hipper than hip with a rhodes. The mark 7 is teetering on both sides IMHO.

  • I think it might be Brian Brommberg

  • The bass player is a beast. Who is he?

  • @BoozehammerOfGalem It's Bromberg in 100% :)

  • I love the tempo they chose. Everything about it sounds great.

  • I think that man in the middle is Dave Brubeck

  • @foxybrown2 No, the person in the middle is actually David Benoit. A great keyboard player/composer/arranger in his own right. Check out some of his albums. Great stuff!!

  • I've played on a Mk 7 extensively at my local music store... It's more balanced, lighter to play, and the added midi- and preamp features make it a lot more versatile. Having said all that, I own a decent condition '77 Mk I Rhodes and I wouldn't swap it for a Mk 7 in a hundred years. Perfection isn't what you should be after with these instruments in my humble opinion.

  • dunno if this is a bad recording if so i'm sorry, but the bass guitar sounds missing

  • come on keyboard players use the real thing you know it makes sense !!

  • Comment removed

  • is that eric marienthal? what a player

  • yeah mr.Brian Bromberg on bass

  • Hi there, just wanted to say its not a "Fender" Rhodes, its just a Rhodes now :)

  • george duke is just so f#cking nasty it maks me sick.

  • I like the Mark 1's the best. I think the mark 7's have that brighter sound that can be kinda cheesy after awhile.

  • I don't like the songs in their albums actually, but their performances here are brilliant and they're so talented!

  • Wait! I take that back! I think that's Brian Bromberg on the bass! LOL

  • Cool! Jeff Lorber and David Benoit. Don't recognize anyone else yet.

  • Eric Marienthal on the sax, cool! Where is Herbie and Corea?

  • George Duke smashed the other two guys.

  • oohhh I LIKE IT

  • and carrot top shreds those drums man i didn't know he was into jazz

  • To clanky and shrill in the upper midrange. Listen to one in person and you will hear a spray paint can being rattled. It's a harsh, thin souless clank that doesn't come close to the warmth of the older pianos. I like a wurly better than the new Rhodes. The new Rhodes does have it's place. 80's ballads come to mind. Or Mr. Rogers type tunes. Nothing wrong with that.

  • ill keyboard throwdowns

  • sorry, I just don't like that song - something more original would have been more entertaining

  • @LF0 WHO CARES WHAT YOU HAVE LIKED OR NOT!?

    THE 3 PERFORMED AWESOMELY GOOD!

  • who are the other 2 cats on keys????

  • @TheJuvjuv Black Rhodes - Jeff Lorber, Red Rhodes - David Benoit

  • George Duke is killin!

  • ERIC MARIENTHAL! Hell yes

  • I've tried the red one in a store and it feels great!

  • @sharpazn Which store?

  • @ryancangri

Archambault, Berri street in Montréal. It was last summer at the same moment of the jazz festival.

  • yea boiiii CANTALUPE, first few bars wins everybody over, instantly

  • this is hott music

  • can you tell me the name of this music?

  • It's "Cantelope Island" composed by Herbie Hancock.

  • i sure would buy one but there aint none in england :-(((((

  • i play the rhodes and use various effects added on (like aforementioned electric guitars!) my go to is the cry baby wah wah.

  • This session is really good !!! I am a keyboard player and am going to try to pick up some of these tricks and licks ......but for now I will study chord voicings for now ........OMFG!!

  • jeff lorber and george duke, nice !

  • gee.. i wonder why steely dan guy er uh. named Donald Fagen used an MXR phase 90 on his rhodes sound?

Why do many people use tremelo.... im telling you.. this was 4500 in canada.. and the keys were plasticy and cheap feeling..... there are many RHODES sounds... mk this and mk that... the taxi rhodes sound differnt than the YOU"RE my best friend by queen rhodes on and on. A one trick pony for 5k isnt gonna fly.. not these days. sorry.

  • "You're my best friend" is a Wurlitzer.

  • i played this new rhodes.... in canada it is $4500... and is a ONE TRICK PONY.. no tremelo.... no phaser NO NOTHING... volume and tone. thats it.. and the keybed is very plasticy esp in the upper registers... and heavy... i dont get this product at all... for five grand i can build a nice home studio with software that blows rhodes away. esp this one...... ONE SOUND AND TWO KNOBS... I -DONT-THINK-SO

  • I am not sure you understand the concept of the Rhodes.

Why would it have Tremelo, phasers, or any special "effects" like that? It's not a synthesizer. It is an electronic instrument (since it has guitar pickups inside it)

It has no strings, it uses fixed fork-like, well, tuning forks (just about) and hammers with the same action as a piano..

It is only supposed to have a volume and tone.

  • agreed. you can´t see the rhodes as a synthesizer, better compare it with an e-guitar, because it has the same technics in it. at the guitar you have your humbucker´s and singlecoils, and it´s the same with the rhodes, so it isn´t a standalone instrument, you have to plug into an amp or something it. you definitely can´t compare it to studio software like vst plugins and software synths, the rhodes sound is uncompareable.

  • Bloody hell - I think I'll give up trying!

  • Pretty sure that's Brian Bromberg on bass... that was an amazing solo.

  • the original sounds way better for me ... i have one

  • I almost think it's an age thing that just comes with older instruments. I almost think that the precise tuning in the newer ones causes them to loose their touch (Just a bit!)

The Rhodes, despite being a fixed tune instrument, does in fact go out of tune over a long period of time.

  • could be. in some synthesizers people detune it because they want it to sound phat. mine was tuned new a week ago, but i still prefer the old mark 2 73 model.

  • the piano sounds awesome, but I personally don't like the plasticky-looking casing. It makes it look like a Cordovox.

  • gibson owns the wurlitzer name these days. i wish they'd resurrect the 200 series.

  • @nickd444 I bet it would cost... Over 2k haha They would add all kinds of crap. I like the one I have: $400 on craigs list xD Hard to find though. Maybe one every 2 months shows up for a good price in KC.

  • Comment removed

  • @nickd444 I actually don't want them to resurrect the wurlis...cause it makes them that much more sought after and special...I say leave that sound to the 60's 70's and 80's. Anything reproduced won't be the same. If they do reproduce them, it'll just be like the stratocasters...unspecial

  • @nickd444 Unfortunately, with all the vintage snobs out there, there's no way the 200 would be resurrected. There are so many people saying the Mark 7 sucks while THEY'VE NEVER EVEN HEARD ONE OR SEEN ONE IN PERSON. I told some musicians in Seattle that never heard of the Mark 7 and were like "Really?New?Nah, go vintage. It sounds better." What an ignorant statement. The Mark 7 has the clearest tone out of all my professionally tuned Rhodes'. Better action, better tines, longer keys = better feel.

  • These are some of the most talented fingers in the music industry!

  • is that jeff lorber far leff?

  • yes he is

  • I love Canteloupe Island :)

This is a nice take, really smooth sound.

    Nice.

  • Great jam !

  • this shit is a fender rhodes...?

  • Why you say that cause its not old? lol i actually played 1 they sound just like the original which i have

  • fender cut loose of the rhodes name a long time ago, but the keyboards are typically known as fender rhodes, yes.

  • Duke is da man. But who's the guy in the center?

  • David Benoit. He is is awesome too!

  • MARIENTHAL IS A MONSTER!!!!

  • I WANT ONE!!!!

  • I need Chick Corea! But the winner is George Duke!

  • does anyone know how much they will be?

  • I feel really stupid... but I forgot the name to the tune they're playing!

    What is it?

  • Cantaloupe Island!!

  • george duke is satanic rhodesmen :)

  • On Sax ERIC MARIENTHAL, he is like "Flavio Insinna"...

    Who are the Rhodes players?

  • ahahahahahahahahhaahahhahahaha

  • Este fender rhodes nuevo el sonido y la estetica es una mierda, porque no vuelven a fabricar los que se fabricaban en los 70

  • Cantaloupe island.

    Love it.

  • what is fender waiting for? why hasn't the mark VII already been released?

  • Harold Rhodes entered into a marketing agreement with Leo Fender in '59, and the Rhodes company was bought along with Fender by CBS in '65. The Rhodes factory was closed in '87 (I believe) due to lack of sales in the era of synth keyboards, and the use of the name was sold to Roland, which sampled a "sort-of" Rhodes sound in models. The new company is independent of all these past associations but former engineers are involved in the revival of the company. Tooling up a factory is complicated.

  • Do you have some inside info as to when these new Rhodes will be available? They were debuted at NAMM '08 and still not in the stores. Tried to contact the company. No reply. ??????

  • No, I don't know but I've seen some people comment elsewhere that those who have prepaid for their pianos have been promised delivery by mid-year.

  • P.S. Kitschead, all of the keyboard and cabinet variations will be available in black, red, and white color casings, which are made of hard plastic like the final Rhodes model (the Mark V), which was produced in the final year, before the company shut down in 1984. The Five was the lightest Rhodes model, at 100 lbs; I'm guessing that these will weigh in similarly. The speaker cabinets are constructed of wood, like other amplifier cabinets.

  • Wow. Thanks.

  • Are these just 3 different colours or are they actually 3 different pianos as well?

  • Rodes will be offering nine different models. S series (Standard), a passive instrument with volume and tone knobs; A series (Active), with a pre-amp, three-band EQ, and vibrato controls; and AM series (Active MIDI), previous features plus MIDI capabilities. Each series will be available in 61, 73, or 88 keys configurations, for a total of nine possible variations. The keyboard will pair to either a leg stand or speaker cabinets, like the old suitcase style of previous Rhodes models.

  • Is the pianist with the white hair David Benoit? can't tell.

  • What d fucking ending dude...???!!!

  • mr duke showed top class playing here

  • Cantaloupe Island

  • yeah

  • What is the name of that number actually?

  • Hmm which colour would I choose? I think definitely either red, or black. The white one somehow seems a bit Bert Bacharach. A bit Elton John.

  • I enjoy the Rhodes on stage with some of the best keybordist playing a Herbie classic!

  • damn!

  • Mr Duke, David Benoit, Brian Bromberg, Eric Marienthal.... what else? I love Rhodes piano!!!!!

  • Excuse me! He was Jeff Lorber, not David Benoit....

  • David Benoit was the man on the red Rhodes.

  • is that eric marienthal on sax. I saw him play with chick corea.

  • hi does anybody know oldschool artists that play deep fender rhodes stuff please let me know...

  • Chick Corea plays on a rhodes quite a bit I think.

  • In fact, he owns one of only three Mark Vs in existence with midi capabilities. Rhodes built three prototypes in 1984 before the company went out of business and the use of the name was sold to Roland in 1987, which made synthesized versions--not the real McCoy.

  • you have amazing ears... thats a genuine rhodes piano hes playing. the inside is almost exactly like a mark 5.

  • Sure it's a new Rhodes and the action is great but it sounds cheap and bell like. Compare it to an old MK1 suitcase and it's like chalk and cheese. Anyway I was referring to the 'Groove' as sounding like midi, sounds like Kenny G.

  • Oh, ok. fair enough, it is a bit too strict feel wise.

Some of the the mark fives are also quite bell like in sound, Im hoping that you can adjust it a little to get a nice breakup point in the tines or action, or if it comes to then I will just put a tube overdrive on it occasionally.

  • I think the main difference sonically between the models is in the harp, I guess you could switch it with an old one to get more bark and bite.

  • stupid it's electro-mechanical

  • is that mr Duke??

  • unbelievably good. :D

  • why?

  • hmmm... and yet its still so popular.

could be because its easily recognizable and people can get into the groove pretty quickly.

  • The White one is bad ass! I love it!

  • I wouldn't buy the colo(u)r though. I think it gets annoying to clean it after every gig

  • I appreciate your sensitivity to people who choose to use different spellings of colo(u)r. Thank you kind sir.

  • I don't think they have enough Rhodes players on the stage.

  • Haha! I laughed at that comment (that's why I wrote 'haha' instead of just 'lol.'

  • That looks like Benoit - he was in Spokane at the Opera house in like 1984 or so, and he was a pretty cocky dude - even before he became famous

Couldnt even strike up a conversation with him.

  • I would have told him to kiss my nuts in Macy's window.

  • great..rhodes is coming out with a new piano now all they have to do is get yamaha to come up with a new electric grand piano and i will be in heaven

  • is that george duke on the white rhodes?

  • also, rhodes is bringing back their keyboard, when is honher bringing back the clav!? wouldnt it be great if rhodes started making new parts for old units too? i could fix up my old MK1 way cheaper that way!

  • No, It's barry Manilow!!!

  • the question said the white rhodes not the white guy

  • the question said the white rhodes not the white guy

  • I thought it was Millard Filmore.

  • Benoit is the gray haired cat

  • This is my best friends dad!!!

  • Sounds like the older models still knock this new one out the park.

  • What's the name of that first song they play?

  • 'Cantaloupe Island' By Herbie Hancock. I actually prefer this funked up version though! Funkilicious indeed.

  • I had two 73 key Rhodes when I toured---one in the room and one on stage with the B3, the Arp Omni, the Hohner D6 clavinet and a Minimoog. I'd switch the rhodes out each week with the one in the room so I could tune it. Had an 88 key model first which I actually got from Neil Giraldo (Pat Benatar) They were my favorite instruments for years. Great fun to play.

  • What a beautiful instrument

  • Looking forward to seeing you at NAMM!

    Keyboard Magazine

  • George Duke is GOD!!!!!!!

  • my uncle has a motif i have the electro. i think theyre both pretty close but what do i know im still a kid. my uncle uses the motif to most his gigs just because he doesnt wanna haul his 70s rhodes around that thing's a fuckin behemoth. but yeaaa new rhodes for new generation.. im down.

  • let's discuss what is the best emulation of a rhodes. we've had a nord electro/stage, the motif.. anybody has any experience with the soniccell?

  • Nobody knows when these beauties are gonna be for sale???

  • Mark 7 61 Standard $2995

    Mark 7 61 Active $3495

    Mark 7 61 Active/Midi $3995

    Mark 7 73 Standard $3495

    Mark 7 73 Active $3995

    Mark 7 73 Active/Midi $4495

    Mark 7 88 Standard $3995

    Mark 7 88 Active $4495

    Mark 7 88 Active/Midi $4995

  • i knew they'd be pricey, but man, that expensive! where'd you find out about those prices?

  • where did you get this?

do you know something about the release?

    thx

  • It will be released around fall

  • I was right behind george, you can see my camera. My friend Gregg Karukas was with me(goggle his name)

  • huh is it named a Fender Rhodes again ? i thought Fender and Rhodes were individual brands since '75.

  • Si muy bonitos y autenticos pero el problema es para transportarlos , el nord Stage es mas versatil y tiene mas sonidos vintage.

  • That Rhodes will be mine!

  • i wish to have a rhodes i love that sound, and there is no synth that can emulate it

  • Nord Stage?

  • maybe...but nothing as an original rhodes

  • You're probably right. With this sort of thing the original just has something. Plus how cool does it look playing something which looks so freaky!

  • I actually think the Yamaha Motif gets closer than a Nord... but it's still nothing like the real Rhodes sound/feel.

  • Have you seen Volvoxburger's Rhodes posts? very nice stuff.

  • that sax has a weird neck. more an alto with soprano-neck or something

  • It does have a unusual neck for an alto

  • my father had one in 1978 when we lived in israel. when we came to germany he sold it. i could kill him for that.

  • This is simply awesome, jeff lorber, the BADDEST white dude to ever touch keys and then george duke is also a legend and eric marienthal on sax! mannn i wish i was at NAMM! nice vid bro!

  • Also to mention david benoit was killin it on the rhodes too! all this group needed was some bob james on rhodes! Talk about another bad ass! nice vid once again!

  • what does race have to do with it? they were all great musicians

  • you dumbass, i gave credit to every musician in the video. soo now im going to break it down to a moron's level for you, I Paid Lorber a COMMENT!

  • whoops my mistake, the mark V was wood key. But different key mechanism than 70's ones, said not to sound as good, but plays easier, faster, etc.

  • hmm, sounds a little lighter and thinner in tone than the original 70's ones. they say it's based on the Mark V action which was plastic not wood, so that may explain it (mk V was easier to play but not as beefy sounding as the earlier ones)...plus the cost of $2000 to $5000...I'm sticking to my 70's one

  • I was there standing behind George on the floor, it was awesome. I'm going every year! Enjoyed myself that week-end along with a concert from Joey Defra. George Duke is off the hook any day to me. Rhodes with midi is going to make some big money now!

  • what?? new rhodes? i need MONEY !

  • George Duke superb (natch) but the guy on the little red job matched him for invention.

  • Fantastic video... The quality is better on the fender rhodes website though.

  • GEORGE DUKE IS THE MAN
