The Russian government asked the Russian CDB named by Alekseev in the next few years to resume production of еkranoplanes , which ended in the early 1990's. To renew the design and development work is planned in two phases, the latter of which will begin in 2012.
Soviet and architecture engineering always looks like you visit a parallel world. Fascinating! Too bad that the technology disappeared with the fall of the Union.
This is amazing. I am surprised this hasn't replaced international overseas travel. Except I might be a bumpy ride. Still a very cool aircraft all the same and very unique looking too. thank you for posting this video.
@49bobbyk easy, the Russians payed attention in calculus during highschool while Americans were getting laid, hence they made them their biatchs from 1960-1990, which then it became close to a stale mate until now, which the Russians are the only ones with a reliable form of reaching the ISS (which they cofunded). their Energia rockets are like the Ford F-150s of the rocket industry!!! Built Energia Tough, no advertisement needed to prove, only records.:-) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God everything Russian just looks like dangerous galactic space bugs. But eight massive engines on that last one? Good grief! And can it even use proper ground effect in rough seas or is it just a fair weather sailor?
Ok, so is it a low flying cargo plane or a high riding hydroplaning boat with wings? I'm guessing that speed is the reason for its design, and possibly the reduction of its signature on radar, but damn, it's so weird. Is it possibly the only plane that uses both jets and props?
@leananshae No, speed was not the Ekranoplane's strong suite (it's actually fairly slow). Fuel efficiency, as well as below-radar sweep was it's advantage due to wing-in-ground effect.
Cruising engine (1x НК-12МК) is the same as on Antonov АН-22 that have 4 of these and max takeoff mass 250 tons vs. Eaglet's max takeoff mass 140; also on Tupolev Ту-95К+ (4x same engine +1.3 of its takeoff mass), Ту-126, Ту-142, Ту-114.
Harrier with takeoff mass 380 tons, payload weight 137 has 8x НК-87, it's sea mod of НК-86 that was on Ил-86 (4x) with its 215 takeoff / 42 payload weight.
@sheebaridgeback The Ekranoplane was known for it's high fuel efficiency. In the case of the missile carrier, all eight engines were used during take-off and landing only. During cruising, only 2 engines were used. in this mode, It was one of the most fuel efficient transporters ever made.
Well, that's Eaglet, it landed and took off on the water with 2 m waves, ran on the beach, carried up to 200 marines or 2 amphibious tanks. One that _lost its tail_ after landing on rocks managed to skim on small takeoff engines all the way back to its base.
And that's Harrier with 6 antiship missiles. It was way cheaper and faster than a destroyer while less visible and fragile than a plane.
While both were mostly test vehicles. And that's about all.
@paveltul the problem is every American video fo the Lun is bad, with false information and such, like theyre biased they didnt do it first. Would love to hear what they were saying on this for some actual info. Great video though!

There is one problem. They are limited to the body of water where they make them. And as usual, Russians blame everything on USA or whatever. It's nice idea, but it's brain dead at birth. Like the Spruce Goose by Howard Hughes.
actually the first, the A-90 orlenok was amphibious, and your comment is retarded, how can you blame america for the amount of lift produced by a wing? the ekranoplan is faster than any ship and more fuel efficient than an airliner. the A-90 orlenok had a 4000 mile range.they can also carry a heavier load than air cargo.

Not really practical. Can operate only over water in the ground effect. Caspian sea may be fine, but moving them to Atlantic or Pacific can be a problem. And why do you need them at all? Just another brain dead child of the cold war.
I guarantee you -- we have not seen the last of this type of craft. Extremely efficient, high speed load carriers. Don't be surprised to see FedEx on the side of a huge one in the coming years. Alexeyev was a genuius!
fuck fedex , we dont need them to buy us out. we will have russian company logo on it. why the hell people like you always think that the world needs your greedy corporations as saviors? there r many kickass companys which are not US owned. Nokia(finland) kick ur Motorola (US) ass bigtime. you can lie to US citizens but the rest of the world is not dumb
You misunderstood the statement. You will also see Aeroflot, Polyot Air, and other large companies using this type of ship. The various freight companies, whom ever they are, will only purchase them from the manufacturer -- who may very well be Russian. Alexeyev was a brilliant man.
Sure, that's why the U.S. has the worlds largest GDP at $14 trillion and the Russian GDP is about $1.2 trillion..the single state of California alone has an economy larger than all of Russia!
Actually the E.U. is not a Nation. The E.U. is made up of 27 nations and has a GDP(PPP) of around 14 trillion with a population of 500 million and GDP per capita of $28,000. The U.S is one single nation with a GDP of 14.3 trillion with a population of 300,000 million with a GDP per capita of $47,000 What I said is 100% correct! With a GDP per capita of $19,000 more than the EU,the U.S. is more productive and does this with 200 million fewer people!
the EU has established a single economic market across the territory of all its members. Currently, a single currency is in use between the 15 members of the eurozone. Considered as a single economy, the EU generated an estimated nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of US$16.83 trillion in 2007, amounting to 31% of the world's total economic output, which makes it the largest economy in the world by nominal GDP and the second largest trade bloc economy in the world by PPP valuation of GDP.
As I said it is 100% fact the U.S. has the largest economy of any nation on earth! Its GDP per capita is $19,000 more than the E.U. gdp per capita! the U.S. unemployment rate averaged around over the last 25 years has been 5.5-5.6%. Many Europeans nations were double the U.S average unemployment rate!
Its nice to see that the Military Ekranoplanes are laid up and have not been scrapped, but in a TV documentary I saw a number of years ago they showed an even bigger one that was under construction when the plug was pulled "Spsartal" it was called, I just want to know did they ever finish it or was it still born?
That is "Spasatel" and it's Project 903 LUN class ekranoplan. The only difference is, that it was reequipped as a SAR craft, and the number of engines was reduced to 6. The whole craft is actually finished, apart from the interior. So it still is waiting in Nizhny Novgorod, for some money, and it could be put in service. But without the help of a new contractor, who could bring some money into the project, I don't think that's going to happen.
in 1993, the usage and development of ekranoplan was stopped after it has been shown to the americans. I have pitty with people who don't understand what this means. it's like 2+2. the russian gouvernment makes decision against russia.
Crazy communists did not allow Alexeyev to make a better version. He wanted to make ekranoplane, which could carry airplanes. Imagine. That is the power. The ecranoplane, which is aircraft carrier. But Americans were clever enough to convince all Russian rulers that all that is nonsense and they stopped the production.
