"Sundown" was inspired by his then girlfriend, Cathy Smith, later more infamously known for her involvement in the death of John Belushi. Lightfoot has commented in interviews that she was "the one woman in my life who most hurt me."Released in March 1974, "Sundown" allowed Lightfoot to regain the momentum that his career had taken three years earlier with "If You Could Read My Mind"
Considering the fact he has suffered an Abdominal aneurysm, underwent a tracheotomy, and survived a stroke, I think he's doing pretty well here. Let the man do what he loves to do, I'd still go see him.
So my son is a nine inch nails fan and talks me into going to one of their concerts. I make him a deal, if I go he has to go to Lightfoot with me. I go to his, wasn't bad, then he complains about our deal for weeks. We go to the concert and halfway through I see he is really into it, appreciating the master. Afterwards he asks if we can see him again sometime. I come home and he has my copy of "Gord's Gold" in his Xbox. I hope I passed on what real musical talent is.
It's funny but this is a song that Gordon's fans seem to either really like or not like. I believe I saw an interview where Lightfoot said that he didn't particularly like this song himself. I sure do, though!
No need to be sorry. I actually like this song and, like you, most of his other songs too. Gordon is a class-act and a great guy. I hope he's around for a long time. Thanks for posting this.
@fcernig33 Saw Gordon around this same time and I got to say the band sounded awesome. Maybe the video sound quality doesn't do the instruments justice. Later we ran into the whole band at the hotel bar and had a few rounds with them. I got to spend time talking to Barry He was really a great guy to talk to. I believe he told me that the newest member of the band joined in 1983. He had some great stories of going to Bob Dylan's house for a party and meeting all kinds of legends of music.
RIP Terry - you will be missed.

Barry Keane's been with Gord for God knows how long, and it's not the sort of song where the drums can go all over the place

He's 70. But before you call that old - remember Willie Nelson is 75 and BB King is 83 I think... and the Stones, christ they are what, 133?
