Cool record. I was lucky enough to experience a few drive-in movies before they were all torn down and redeveloped in the Portland OR area. I think Ghosbusters was the last move I saw at one.
That would have been around 1984...I think the last time I had been to the drive-in before this new one was built was around 1983 when I saw "E.T." This one here seems to do real well...always lots of people in attendance.
your a cat what kind of animal is your friend a fox ,, Nice to see a drive in being built . You can have both community and privacy in a drive in . There is nothing else like it .. i play this song on the piano a Summer place
Yes the drive-in experience is great as you do have a lot more freedom than at an indoor theatre but it is still a public event, something to go out to and do, I really do agree with you. Also yes he is a fox.
@123demaio . Too bad that they just don't start building them all over the country. There used to be over 4000 drive in theaters, now, they're around 400, if that. If they started building them, maybe, just maybe it might offer employment and stimulate the economy. They used to have 2 of them in the city where I live, but they were both tore down.
Ahh..the theme from "A Summer Place". I think the part about replacing speakers that get torn off back onto the post is funny, but my 58yo friend says that more often than not, the side window busted instead. Chad...I bet you are becoming a familiar presence around Midland...driving that distinctive car and all :-)
There are two other 70's Grand Marquis like mine which I just saw over the past few days. These are the only other ones I ever saw in this area. One of them actually is for sale! don't know If I could really get it but may look at it.
None of the other ones has my color scheme though.
I think the drive-in in Lamesa texas about an hour and a half north still has the speakers, will have to try it out some time.
The same drive in that opened in the early 1950's is still operating here in KC. It has new digital sound that you receive through your car stereo. They have swap and shop on Sat & Sun.
I have that "Theme From a Summer Place" tune on 45 somewhere.
Do you know anything about the demolished sites? It sparks my curiosity.
There is a site called Cinema Treasures that could tell you about most any theater. I used to frequent there around the time I got my old theatre organ console.
I think I have the theme from a Summer Place on a 78 too!
I mades some comments on Cinema Treasures a while back....all the photos you see here are from Midland, Texas. The demolished theatre was called the El Rancho. It was apparently only open for a short time in the 50's. The picture of me with the poles is where the screen was and I am holding a 70v line transformer for speakers which I found in the lot.
thats great that there building more drive-ins. i've always thought drive-ins are much more fun than regular theaters.plus you can bring your own food.
Thanks! Actually when I first got the Grand Marquis I completely removed the disintegrated vinyl and painted it the beige color you see here. These photos are from 2005. Then later I painted it green. I really like all the cactuses too! I even found some growing wild in my field.
For some reason Texas seems to have probably the largest number of drive-ins...the climate really does help. I do remember there being several drive-ins in N.E. Ohio when I was a kid but not sure how many remain today.
Harbour Lights....The Platters...priceless.

Thank you spats. I was actually just there last night, in that very grand marquis! It was real nice weather for it.

Thats a cute record. Any Idea of when it's from? My guess would be around 1957 or so?
Trance88 3 years ago
THat's close...I'm thinking maybe a little later like around '60 based on some of the songs on the record.

They are lots more fun! We don't go to the indoor theatre here really at all, the drive-in is so much better.

Make me hungry why don't ya. lol

Hehe...they even advertise some items on this record you can't get at our drive-in!
retrochad 3 years ago
there used be Drive in Theater around here
but the airport that was built next to it
the air port bought it and tore it down
Silverwolfstarz 3 years ago
I have seen that in a lot of places...the land the theatre sits on gets sold because it's too valuable...it is too bad.
retrochad 3 years ago
i have never been to a drive in. there is one not far from me that still does ok. i should go!
1944johndeerel 3 years ago
You should! We like it so much more than the indoor movies.

Awesome record! Like a time portal to the past.
Cool pictures too. Awesome how they're building a new drive-in theatre as well.
haha look at all the cactuses! Thats awesome. We dont get them here lol
Great shot of you sitting in front of the Grand Marquis there. Did you get a new vinyl roof? I remember you had it painted dark green before.
Haha funny they should mention not driving away with the speaker boxes, my mom remembers people doing that all the time. Cool souvenier though lol

I suppose that drive ins are more popular down south where the weather is much better. I've only been to one once a long long time ago.
