And this song is, of course, Wagnerian in its scope and delivery. Mac and Will are gods for our time.
Hated my London office job. Full of twats. I decided to start a new life in Japan. I was leaving Heathrow, the daddy of airports. The big silver bird was powering down the runway. Rolls-Royce thrust. We were over the great city, heading east. All the morons were "In the margins". Classy feeling.
Loved EATB in the 80's , missed a few albums then saw them live last year and loved them all over again. Siberia is my fave album but Evergreen has some amazing tracks too. Love Mac's husky voice too.
It makes me want to burst out in tears, one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Ian's poetry is so deep and meaningful, all his songs make you feel a certain emotion so fully.
Just gotta say that I do not really understand all the hate for U2 here. The fact that at one point in their career (Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree) they sounded very similar to the Bunnymen, and probably owed a good deal to them, doesn't mean they should be resented. Every great artist has taken ideas from other artists, it's impossible to avoid.
Ian has that ability to capture what we all feel, what we all struggle with, throughout each stage of our lives. He really puts a voice to the issues of the human experience. He just nails it. Brilliant song writer.
When Ian McCulloch writes a song it stays written. He touches the deepest nerves and I marvel that he knows exactly how it is and how to tell it. I agree with jackemlyn062: Siberia is a wonderful album.
I remember them way back in the 80.-es, when Sky Channel was the only thing to watch, Echo and the Bunnymen was one of the Good! bands;Excellent tunes, fantastic vocals, McCulloch sounds sandpaper cool to this day too....
BionicShrubbery, concur, no comparison between The Bunnymen and U-2, or U-4, (whatever..) never was, never will be..Bunnymen will always rule! U-2, bono can kiss my U.S./U.K. ass too!!
Theres a poster (I think its still there) in the General Wolfe (an old Victorian/Edwardian pub) in Coventry which was a vital, almost compulsary venue in the 70's/early 80's for any band trawling their shit on the UK gig circuit. 1979/80 U2 played there. Supporting the Bunnymen.
This is one of the highlights from a really strong albumn. His voice has changed a lot but he really knows how to make it work for him & the guitar work is still fantastic. Thankfully, the magic will always happen when Mc and Will are in the same room!
It can't get any better than this: Well maybe if we could bring back Pete and get Les in the shuffle.
They've always been my favorite band and this is just one of many reasons why.
How can you not love ol' Macca? Even if he can be a little difficult at times- dude is a character. Love that hoodie he's wearing again in all the interviews under the coat- looks like candleland days without the leather jacket!
I think Ian has the true bardic spirit. So many so-called Celtic songs are just repetitive and rather boring, but the music should touch your heart and soul, and not just touch them but get very close and squeeze them and light a flame and worship them and open them up and show the deep, rich colors, flavors, sounds that are in the singer/songwriter's heart and in our own. This is what E&TB's music does.
I think these lyrics are absolutely haunting and it's a fabulous song. Too bad the video isn't better. Saw Echo this summer and they sound as good as they ever did!
This is a great song from a great album; I wish more people would hear "Siberia". I always seem to get bothered by single edits; I checked out New Order's "Singles" from the library yesterday and they edit out Hookey's six string bass intro to "Thieves Like Us", one of my favorite parts): Still sounds great, though.
I wish The Bunnymen would team up with Anton Corbijn again for their videos; this isn't bad, but it doesn't display what a nice song this is.
Yeah Siberia is one of their strongest albums ever. I've been lucky enough to see the Bunnymen live lots of times since the comeback in 1997 and they get better and better. This tune, in particular, was included in the set they did for t-inthe-park in 2005 and even though it was in amongst the Killing Moon, The Cutter and all the classics, it really held its own. They should be reveared in the way that the far, far inferior U2 are in my opinion. Proper band!
seriously! He is old and haggard. What happened?
