  • year recorded anyone? He's 63 now. mid 30s when recorded? 1980's?

  • imagine hearing this in the 17th century...

  • @syco50 my hearing wasn't so good then

  • this is a beautiful piece

  • he doesn't exactly look like someone who would play the cello. More like someone who would lead the next Sauron Orc attack.

  • MISCHA MAISKY!

  • I love this piece. And his hair.

Especially how it bounces with every bow stroke.

  • @onandoffsuperfast

leonorjaloto is correct. Bach used many different chord progressions and other such things. If you understand the technical bach, you can easily understand the musical bach. This just requires a lot of practice.

  • it's fairly easy to memorize bach, once you understand the melodies in it. It comes to a point where the parts of the piece follow each other naturally, instinctively.

  • @leonorjaloto

Really? I spent 1 and 1/2 months practicing 2 hours a day to memorize this piece. It took me 3 months for the prelude. I wouldn't say that was easy.

  • @onandoffsuperfast aight well just because it took you that long doesn't mean it takes everyone that long, not like every musician is the same haha

  • @Dioxxipus

    Very true.

  • i wonder how long it took him to learn all of these difficult pieces to the point of memorization.. i think i got halfway through the prelude to no 1 and that's it lol

  • Cello JEWsus.

  • Mischa is not just a musician, he's a genius! This interpretation is incredible!

  • I love his hair. :)

  • The second half of this piece is ridiculous. Just playing it for the first time, it reads like nonsenese, but he brings out the beauty and delicacy in it.

  • cello Jesus!

  • is...is he Jesus?

  • This piece is very difficult but very beautiful. Mischa Maisky plays very well.

  • @TheZacozaco tu as completement raison

  • @TheZacozaco actually, its not imposibble to play it..:) but youre right...it is beatyful

  • does anyone know anything about the cello he plays? I'm curious.

  • Even his hair is crying.

  • i wana learn cello so badly

  • Where is he playing?

  • Basilique Saint-Michel de Bordeaux

  • This is a very powerful and beautiful suite!

  • Jonas Brothers / Lady Gaga are like the fast food of music compared to this filet mignon.

Too bad so few people can afford it. "(i.e. being able to endure not being cool.)

  • brilliant observation! lol

  • I don't know about the rest of you, but I think this guy in the videos is a serious badass. these pieces aren't easy.. and he plays them all SO well!!

  • @Jurbo33

most ppl consider these suites intermediate in difficulty. A lot of the difficulty in these pieces comes from a long-standing tradition of writing in dynamics, tempo changes, etc. etc. by various cello players, that aren't necessarily in the piece.

  • Incredible.

  • Music is nourishment for the soul. It is a beautiful thing, that many of us seem to have forgotten.

  • How true, comrade.

  • ^-^ i can nay agree more, I wish I could play the cello.

  • cool

  • I'm learning this right now and I really like it

  • i tried tightening my bow like that and it worked pretty well, especially because my bow is a little too flexible for something so powerful as this. people need to chill out with the arguing over the bow like they were sitting there somewhere off camera

  • It's not a baroque bow ! Have you ever seen a baroque bow with that much hairs ? The baroque bow is thinner and we don't play with such a bow on a modern instrument.

  • I've seen anyone playing with a bow that tighten

  • real music is art just as this piece irreplacable incomparable to the new wave of empty music this doesnt even need words

  • THIS SONG ROCKS!!!

  • I love the way he plays with such feeling :D

  • the bow it's baroque because J.S. Bach was a baroque composer simple as that. It's sad how people who don't even know what is about start to comment on the performance of an artist who had dedicated his life to perform at his best.

  • @gothiq Go look at the differences between the baroque bow and the modern bow, then come back.

  • if his bow is baroque why doesn't he fix it?

  • Open your ears!!! Doesn't anyone care about the music anymore?

  • Of course people care about music. If someone cracks a corny joke on a video, are they suddenly someone who doesn't care about music?

  • I think most of us secretly hate music. Those of us who play are really terrible at hearing the music anymore anyway.

  • thats the lamest joke ive ever heard

  • That's why it's so good! I lol'd instantly.

  • sorry, i laughed too.

  • @clarkdbro punnnnnnnnn

  • @clarkdbro Because he ain't got time to bleed.

  • @clarkdbro cause he's badass and he doesn't want to :)

  • @clarkdbro because he doesn't have the Mone

  • compared to some of his other bach interpretations, i definitly prefer this. everything is so perfectly fluid. i love how he plays on a box in the middle of the floor too ...haha

  • ahh I love this. He's such a beautiful player, and this peice works so well with his style. :)

  • You idiots! that´s a baroque bow

  • I agree his bow is too tight... so what? he can do whatever he feels like

  • he can make his bow as tight as he want

all you "his bow's too tight" people go fuck yourself in a hole and stop talking like you know everything.

  • Comment removed

  • fck u guys, go study and stop to say bullshits about his bow or his interpretation, the only ones who can say anything is the greatest cellist, not you guys. how many concerts do u play? how many orchestras call u to performace?

  • Are you guys writing comments, thinking you know every thing about the cello?

  • I think his bow is a bit too tight...

  • I hope you guys know that his interpretation of the Bach movements are classical.

  • ok ya for all of u that think his bow is too tight... it isnt because the cello suites are written during the baroque period and bak then they didn't have bows like our modern bows, their bows were shaped crescent kind of like a overtightened bow but really... just stop with the "his bow is too tight!"

  • This is a wonderful interpretation, very emotive with a judicial use of rebato. Lovely ornimentation.

  • i think ths bow is tight to get the most bite and sound out of the cello. but its just a guess.

  • slower? i think not! also, i agree with 1stcellomama about the criticizing. besides, it's more in the style of the period. if ya think that baroque bows curved outwards then inwards, his is more accurate than anything we do...

  • i would have liked it more if he played a little slower

  • Slower? Yes, you can always play Bach slower and it will sound maybe even more intense, but then you can also play it faster (check out Rostropovich here on Youtube - he takes under 3 minutes in this piece!).

  • If I played as beautifully as he does, I might criticize his bow tightness, too.

  • His bow is rather tight...But that doesn't have any effect on his tone, so I could care less, really. Again, wonderful interpretation. Maisky really knows how to take the piece and make it his own. *golf clap*

  • yes, it is tight, but i guess that mr maisky knows a little about cello-playing and that this thigt bow is not an accident...;-)

  • dude its baroque style... no shit his bow is tight

  • And his hair is awesome.

  • This is just amazing. Spectacular performance.

  • I love cellos. . . So cool. . .

  • That was tight yo espescially the begining where did you get music

  • hahahahahaha

  • Ahahaha. Tight yo where did you get the music? Try googeling "bach cello suites." Lol.

  • perfect
