  • There are so many honest, genuine people in this film it's definitely worth watching.

  • although i value the notion of the survival of the independent record store! a lot of them overprice their stock where I live, which I find quite silly, simply because the music lover knows their stuff and what's worth what, so someone who finds a copy 5 to 10 bucks cheaper, is a loss for the more expensive retailer, multiply this by 50 customers a month and that means $500 less to pay the shop rent/overheads etc etc, so I say to any shop owner reading this, "meet us halfway and you'll survive".

  • holy shit noam chomsky wtf mateyyyyyyy

  • THIS MOVIE MADE ME WANT TO PUNCH SOMEONE IN THE DICK BECAUSE I DONT WANT MY LOCAL RECORD STORE TO CLOSE

  • the view uk band do an amazing cover on this song wicked

  • @theache2003

Interviewer: Last question, what's your favorite rock record?

Noam: You got me on that one.

  • What does the interviewer ask Chomsky? And what does he answer? I just cant get to understand.

  • FYI for any of you who have NetFlix, this movie is on instant queue. So glad I watched this. ALL HAIL THURSTON

  • Digital Planet your local community record store in Murfreesboro Tennessee is open and alive and well...What else do you want to know.

  • at 2:00 Ian reveals the big hidden truth that all record company owners care about is money. Shocking! Isn't that what they are in business to do? The myth that evil money hungry record executives are preventing "real" artists from becoming discovered is no longer relevant in our new internet age.

  • guys, we have to accept it, record stores will dissapear. period. Maybe one can say that the good part of this is that record labels, might dissapear as well (wouldn't that be great?) Luckally, bands, musicians won't dissapear, neither will record studios---- (though studios might become home studios)

  • Goner records is doing real well, run by the fine friends of the Oblivians. Surprised I didn't see them in this doc.

  • Just ordered this from my local independent record store "Mad Platter" in West Chester, PA. Watching it now. So far... SOOO GOOD! Order this DVD.

  • legs mcneil has always been a mouthy cunt . he is a fucking pest .useless twat. i hoped he had died but......horrible shit house.

  • BUY FROM THE STORES EVERYONE!!!

  • I used to run Platterpuss Records in Long Beach, CA - and a bunch of other stores that were a bit more mainstream. This film speaks directly to my heart.

  • at 0:15, that´s not the "mayan calendar".

    it´s the "Piedra del Sol"

  • Don't you know any women who love music that you can interview?

This looks like an interesting documentary, but you're leaving out half the music-lovers...

  • @Chunkazoota If more women actually shopped at indy record stores (cuz women do be shoppin'). then I can see it. But the fact that women buy more than 70% of the "new country (read: shit pop crapola) plus tons of other pure shite, leaves me happy that they didn't talk to many women.

  • @Ldale11

So, apparently the bad taste of the many reflects on the few who are not interested in listening to crap. The majority of PEOPLE IN GENERAL do not listen to quality music, and that includes a hell of a lot of men. Your thought processes leave something to be desired.

  • @Ldale11

You're using false logic. You're not looking at the buying numbers for good genres, only "new country" (also, I question your sources of information - care to provide them?). That's a biased and incomplete sample, like saying dogs are better than cats because 70% of cats threw up on the carpet at least once. It makes no sense.

  • buy from independent sellers online like me, Dave Jones Reverberation Music (24 years in the biz), too expensive to do physical stores anymore. Much more organized online at least for me (those that do it right at least). Cool seeing Encore in Ann Arbor & Chomsky (wtf he doing in this docu! gotta see it).

  • RIP- Pier Platters, Adult Crash, Satellite Records, Vinyl Solution, Exile on Main Street, Earwig.....

    Glenn is hysterical in this.

  • RIP Be-Bop Records and Fine Art, Odds And Sods Records, and Moby Disc. Long live FreakBeat and Amoeba.

  • Does anyone know the background music? The one that goes: "I need that record! I want it now! now! now!"?

  • this documantary looks amazing... how can i find it?

  • I agree with CreepyFreakFilms: MALCOLM TENT RULES INDEED. I was honored to be interviewed for Mr Tent's Wild Ride.

  • Anyone know how I can see this online? Would love to watch!!

  • DVD release coming early next year!

  • @ineedthatrecord - you can catch it on netflix instant for now.

  • @cauthoncrazy Maybe you can buy it at your local record store.

  • @kaput450 I was able to see it via Pitchfork TV and it was awesome! Great interviews and great message.

  • @cauthoncrazy Try the Instant Queue on Netflix

  • @cauthoncrazy It's on Netflix! instant play!

  • @cauthoncrazy its on Netflix

  • @cauthoncrazy streaming on netflix

  • People should see what it's like in Vancouver now. The downtown core has one major music store (HMV) which is no longer selling back catalog CDs (just new releases and "on sale" items such as 2 for $20, etc.) and there is one indie store close by which is a pretty shitty one. There used to be quite a few stores to go to say 20 or 30 years ago but I guess people just don't give a fuck anymore about music, or at least, the music buying experience.

  • It's sad that small businesses go out of business in general, but the reality is that even big retailers like Best Buy don't sell CDs anymore. It's all online now. For indie artists there are still outlets to get their music heard and sold, eg CD Baby. But it's all going digital now. If I have time I'll check out the movie at the SF Documentary Festival, kicking off on October 16, next.

  • "...because I need more records." Haha, me too, Mr. Kaye.

  • This is beautiful... I'll watch it again and again. And I used to live across the street from Flo's Diner. I miss it lots! But I miss my local record stores WAY more.

  • Fear not, Miss Flo's is still going strong! I miss the record stores too... Thanks for likin' the vid!

  • MALCOLM TENT RULES!

  • my cousin brendan made this and its pretty awesome! he's gonna be big someday! great job!

  • I live in Los Angeles and I miss every Mom & Pop store that has ever closed, no body cares about what make a city a home anymore. Enjoy your Starfucks and Ballmarts, because there all thats left to you now. :-(

  • Ian is right but then again look at Epitaph Records, Brett cares about the music.

  • epitaph fucking sucks

  • okay believe what you want. but please keep it to yourself. I dont care if you say it to someone else but dont say it to someone who cares about Epitaph.

  • Can't wait to see it!

  • BRENDAN THIS IS GOING TO BE HUGE

  • long live the record store!

  • The music industry is banking on lifestyle now, not music. There's no money in selling music anymore. There's money in lifestyle and branding. One sad word: Emo

For musicians it's a catch 22. The internet is a great way to get music heard but when there's 16 million other bands/artists trying to get heard it's like: What's the point?

  • Whats the point? The fun of making music, thats what. Make music for yourself and it will be 1. good and 2. fun. Make it for other people and it will fail on both accounts.

  • That's right and I usually find I dig bands that look like they're having fun.

  • @ForOctavioPaz the answer is built in to the trailer. Build a strong regional following first. That's how bands like Aerosmith, The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones, The Grateful Dead, Blondie, The Ramones, etc...all did it.

  • Nice. Hope you can put this out in more places.

  • Awesome Dude! Like the way you started with Legs' anti-comments and built from there. Rock on!
