also 'damadam mast kalandar' - the tv channel was forced to rerun that programme over and over again due o public demand. for a short time she became the belle of bollywood - everyone fell in love with her! there was talk of her singing for hindi films...but then lata mangeshkar felt so threatened by runa's popularity (both for her singing and let's face it, her good looks) that she pulled some powerful strings and forced the nightingale of bangladesh to fly back to dhaka...believe it or not!
when runa laila came to bombay in the 70s she sang this song on doordarshan (government tv channel - it was the only channel in those days before liberalisation).
But then again they have prodeced brilliant films like Sholay, Mother India, Black, Main Tulsi Tere Angaan Ki, Baiju Bawra, Pyassa, Sahib Biwi aur Ghulan, Mughal E Azam, Umrao Jaan, Lamhe, Hum Appke Hain Kaun, Zubeidaa, chandni Bar, Kala Pathar, Deewaar, Agneepath, Devdas, Do bigha Zameen, and soooooooo many.
Shah jee its not stupidity by Shabnum its only her simplicity and innocent moves which make this song more precious, and simplicity cannot be stupidity though vulgarity is stupidity.
Is true that all this happened to shabnum? I never heard this and if it is true why this happened to shabnum jee reply me bcoz she is so important to me.
i heard she had to face a very big pain full truth and not only she feel.. her all pakistani fan feel or bear this pain with her i love her so much and always want to see her on screen she is very important for all of us bcuz she is the best
Kiran jee is that true that shabnum went through all that jeopardy that is written in the comments by poissondelamer plz say it is not true bcoz I cannot bear it.
i wish it wouldnt b true but i heard like that thats y she stop making any more movies...well thats wht i heard god knows...no metter wht she is still the best and my princess
no actully not and it can b a story but less chances bcuz my all family members my ants my mom my friends r her fans and they told me all this every one in pakistan know but i cant just say any thing about any one i can just tell wht i heard god knows the truth i love her so much
What a bunch of lies! Extreme racism dripping from your comments. Shabnam made a large part of her name and fame in Lollywood in Lahore. She worked here till the 80's, even after partition of Bangladesh. It was only when the condition of the films deteriorated and also because Shabnam was getting old (only mother roles left for her) that she left for Bangladesh with her husband. Warna both her and her husband made their careers in Lollywood in Lahore. Stop spreading rumors!
Jharna Basak even before joining Lollywood became a superstar with her first film Harano Shoor. So that is that. She did most of her work is Lahore but she was also right up there with superstars like Bobota, Kobori and so forth.
i dont remember it being shown on ptv for election 1977, but i do remember that clips and songs from AINA were shown...it was the latest film then and terribly exciting...none of the pakistani actresses were great dancers...but i think they were also poorly choreographed...most actresses had an exaggerated, emotional, bosom heaving style of acting but anyhow, i loved shabnam and runa laila...i wouldnt hear any crticism of them...
totally agreed , she was blessed, own a beautiful voice i donot think , anybody will know her without pakistani songs . what she had in india , an half song call abbodanna.
zoaibm thanks for the post. its been years since i last listened to it..man oh man...Just curious, is it true that Runa Laila refused to do our traditional "Kadam Buchi" to Madame Noor Jahan. Where did this story come from??
I think they mean qadam boasi>>kissing the feet, probably done in an indirect manner by touching your hands to somebody's feet and then kissing the hands. Its a gesture showing huge respect.

Shabnam,a victime of punjabi culture, she left pakistan, she has been raped, kidnaped, threatend, paid money for ransom several time.
punjab is not land of culture, and arts.
punjab is land of pimps and panders.

Much of their fame was due to that

Runa Laila is indeed popular some parts of India but she have no ability to prove herself as "Living Legend", specially in India.

Tag should mention BANGLADESH too. By the way Runa Laila is a living legend all over South Asia including India and Bangladesh.

It seems that Shabnam was a pathetic dancer. Despite her stupid dance movements, the song was good and still holds value.
