Mel Tillis wrote this. He based the song on a couple who lived near his family in Florida. In real life, the man was wounded in Germany in World War II and sent to recuperate in England.:-)

The only thing different is a bit of the voice (it got louder) and the instruments and overall song is louder.. I could hardly hear kenny rogers in his version. (A few instrument lines were added too). It's not a complete murder really.. I like it.
