  • Why didn't you put the best one? Rick Wakeman rules!!

  • Moraz wins hands down

  • The Greatest Pianist ever are guys Like Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Vladimir, Joseph Fidilmann, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakman, Jordon Rudess. Among many others I didn't mention. However please do no mention BIlly Joel's name in the the greatness of Keith Emerson. It is insulting to music. He is a great song writer nuff said :)

  • To my surprise, Joel and Moraz are winners here. Both playing with much greater ease and precision than Emerson...

  • Search Youtube for ELP - Beyond The Beginning - Piano Improvisations.

Emerson proves why he is the master. Moraz and Joel take a distant back seat. If Joel wasn't a song writer first, nobody would know who he is. Moraz was well known for a short period.

  • These guys are all giants to be respected for their very own unique contributions...I learned something from each one of them....what happened to Tony Banks?...he should be up here too!

  • To compare Keith Emerson with any other Rock or Pop Pianoplayer in the seventies is ridiculous. Absolutely bullshit. You can compare Keith Emerson with Jazz Piano Players of this time like Chic Corea or Keith Jarrett. To compare Emerson with Moraz or Joel is like to Compare John Mc Laughling or Steve Howe with Brian Jones or Peter Townshend, or Chris Britton from the Troggs. This makes no sense.

  • @progmeck1 Look who you are talking to here. These guys have no idea who Chick Corea or Jarrett is because they have confined themselves to the realm of genre, so that's all they understand about music which is no understanding at all. But putting Steve Howe at McGalughlin's level is all wrong too. Steve is very good but he walks in McGlaughlin's shadow like every other guitar player does. But you are right. comparing them to the likes of Pete Townsend is a waste of space...lmao

  • Three incredibles pianists... Moraz play like Mozart, Keith Like Choppin and Billy like a Beethoven...why you are fighting, are you better than ?

  • @grrabelo Who the heck is Choppin??? Oh, I guess you meant Chopin.

  • @WillSmith1958 No Will, is "Choppinho da Brahma " a beer to drink? dude of course is Chopin....

  • Wakeman is better than Moraz on everything!!!

  • HOW DARE YOU mention Joel's name in the same sentence as Emerson! Joel is no master OR pioneer. Keith Emerson IS BOTH!

Joel is just a lounge piano player who writes good songs, but is desperately trying to build his technical legacy during his final years on earth. Too late Billy boy.

  • The piece Moraz plays is not an invention. It's the first movement of his piano sonata from his ESP album.

  • @apieceofeight23

Moraz tune is quite nice. It sounds very much like a Mozart concerto. I like Emerson but he does get cluttered. I don't like Billy Joel.

  • Well not everyone thinks highly of Coltrane,(including me) but I see your point. But check this out: Beethoven received critical acclaim only during and after he already had a degree of fame. That means that the average schmuck was actually responsible for his rise to greatness. Same goes for Shakespeare btw. So imho, anyone has the innate capacity to recognize greatness when they hear it, even though it goes over their head,on the theoretical level. Im speaking in generalities, but what do you

  • I totally disagree with the line- "any casual music connoisseur can distinguish crap from excellence."

Many people ,who have no understanding of what he's actually doing, would say that Coltrane sounds like a bunch noise. It's over their heads, so how can they even say if it's good or not?

  • @melongasket meant to say --what do you think melongasket?

  • To some of you critics out there I'd have to say you all must be better than the lot of them.

Sounds like you're writing for a newspaper . Ohhh "left hand is weak, league of his own" and on and on ad nau seam.

You can only critique someones ability as far as you have a mastery of that ability yourself.

So, where are your gold records then. Or, you can only sit at you're computer and feel like a big critic. Critics suck anyway. Bunch of losers as far as I'm concerned.

  • @melongasket i see your point but dude your logic is really flawed. Any casual music connoisseur can distinguish crap from excellence. I couln't play the first 4 notes of what emerson here plays, but he in fact plays extremely sloppy compared to joo and moraz. That said though, its kind of an unfair comparison; cuz this is emersin in 1978 vs moraz in 2005.

  • @melongasket ...hehe!

  • Rick is the best composer and arranger. Tarkus is great, of course :). Moraz was good in Refugee ... and it's all :(

  • Moraz is in fact more accomplished than Wakeman. He plays classical pieces with aplomb (Chopin's Military Polonaise), whereas Wakeman falters even on the Moonlight. See the CD Steinway to Heaven and listen for yourself. Emerson is the best composer and jazz and modern classical pianist. Moraz and Rudess are both amazingly talented. Wakeman doesn't have the left hand to handle the complexities that the others can do. Billy Joel obviously isn't even in the discussion.

  • @TachyonDrums I agree.. i didnt include wakeman because he is incapable of performing fugues. He doesnt have the left hand for it.

  • Patrick Moraz and Billy Joel wish they could play like Keith Emerson. I would bet they would admit that. Keith Emerson is in a league of his own. Rick Wakeman of Yes is closer in ability to Emerson but still a few steps behind.

  • Billy Joel did not play that song, he only wrote it. I would vote for this performance because it has more feelings with the variations of the keys being hit.

  • @pianodannmarr yup i was going to say that in description but forgot. richard joo is awesome though
