Only difference in soundtrack is Donald's last remark before the iris out. Originally he said "aw nuts". Reportedly the Hay's Office forbade use of this phrase
3:37 HE IS TORTURING CLARABELL BUT IN EACH EPISODE LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT SHAPES CLARABELL TURNS INTO AND THE WAY SHES FLUNG INTO THE AIR ON EACH DIFFER
Given that Warner Bros.' Daffy Duck had black feathers, one wonders if he had been concocted in part as the "reverse mirror image" of white-feathered Donald. Certainly that Daffy could actually be understood, pronounced lisp and all, was 180 degrees from Donald's squawk.
That's awesome to see how much had the animation and design of the most known Walt Disney characters developed during less than a decade and what changes made Walt Disney in his cartoons and in his animation style. I think that in the left part of the video is Donald Duck's 2nd appearance after The Wise Little Hen (part of Silly Symphonies series). Thank you very much for posting it on youtube ! The idea of synchronization of two similar cartoons for making a comparison is really great.
Considering he took multiple boxing glove shots about 8 bricks and other heavy objects to the head and sustained a pretty hefty beating and his entire reaction to the whole thing was :"ohh phooey" perhaps these kids might have reconsidered pissing Donald off.Never tick off somebody that obviously displays superhuman strength and a short tempter
They wanted to make a cartoon in 1939 of Mickey and his friends watching their old cartoons and commenting on it. The problem was, that anything made after Mickey went into color, might be still in theaters. And they couldn't show b/w cartoons, as that would look cheap. The solution? Remake the old cartoons. But Walt decided to stop the project (due to either a strike in 1941 or World War II) , and only Orphans' Benefit survived.
my guess is that at the time, there simply was nothing better available, and they had to do a new one to stay in the mind of people. - but, it could also be sentimentality, or the wish to actualize a past success - as you see, donald and mickey have changed appearance considerably since then. it's also possible that it is to serve as a demonstration how much technology has improved in 8 years.
I was wondering when someone was going to do a comparison of this cartoon. I'm glad it was you, Mike. There's obviously a lot more of fluidity and better acting in the color version. The only thing I liked about the black and white version was Donald's Jimmy Durante impression. Ace Job Mike!
