  • This is a strange way to look at the olympic lifts lol.

  • some of what you say i agree with completely. from an engineering stand point you make lots of sense. However I still have an issue with a violent hip firing and hip opening and keeping my feet planted. Some of my most violent pulls result in coming off the ground, especially with the cleans, but my snatch form agrees, i only am moving my feet into the catch position. great great great information here.

  • I like doing the jumping backward technique as well...I feel I have a better chance of catching the weight as it's coming towards me. I saw Galabin Boevski do this, tried it out, worked wonders for me

  • i wonder how well that form holds up (snatching starting behind the bar), when there's big weights on the bar, i.e., something heavy enough that he HAS to full snatch?

  • With the shoulders set behind the bar, it is a natural consequence, not a mistake.

  • Didn't mean to imply that you said it was a mistake, but that jumping backwards can result from a mistake, as well as an intentional technique.

    Jumping backwards can and is used by some lifters around the world because they believe it gives them a better chance of getting under a bar coming towards them than one in front of them.

    This is a matter of pulling style for individuals.

  • so is trap movement just supposed to be a side effect of your rapid upward movement?

  • I think some of the trap movement, like the heel lift can be attributed to the tremendous acceration from the catapulting movement from the hip extension.  However, I still teach to use the traps a bit to initiate the pull-under to the squat position.

    I will be publishing a book in Sep. that will go into what I teach in greater detail.

  • I know you say shoulders forward but observe a lifter like Aramnau, the 105kg lifter from Belarus, and you will see right before he initiates the pull, he pulls his shoulders down toward his hips by pulling down with the lats.

  • Yes, I simply forgot to mention this slight downward movement of the shoulders. I tell my lifters to do that.

    This little talk was pretty much off the cuff, with no prep. so I was rambling a bit LOL-well, maybe a lot.
