@carlmasondrums the only thing that is difficult in this solo are those one handed rolls he was doin'. The rest of the solo was pretty straight forward and easy. Any drummer could see that. I will give him some credit though, I looked at his video "building a pure dream" it's a lot cleaner. This was a poor first impression for someone who is suppose to be replacing someone like Portnoy.

I knew he was great when I saw him audition for Dream Theater, but thought Marco Minnemann might have the edge. However, after seeing this, there is no doubt of his supremacy! Just too incredible to believe! And one can tell, a very humble and fun guy on top of it. Mike Portnoy wanted to re-join the band, but Mangini is just too good. Since Portnoy does lyrics, perhaps he could do that. After all, he quit because he was overworked. (Excuse spelling)

This is my favorite drum solo ever and is always worth the price of admission alone.

The only drawback in all of it is when you see someone else do a drum solo after, it just seems like a waste of time by comparison.

There's something oddly sloppy about this drum solo...but it's the kind of sloppy that's not just lazy drumming, it's actually his style of playing. I don't know there seems to be something strange about this solo :P

I believe this is pretty much a perfect drum solo. He starts off with some simple beats to get the crowd going (It's simple to him, to me it's like advanced calculus), then right at 2:15 he starts to show off his raw talent and speed, one handed roll god dammit, and some funny faces too, then at about 3:49 he says "Fuck it" and gives everyone an orgasm.

I've been trying to learn this solo for like 7 months now. I think I have the first 5 seconds down.

Mike Mangini is a great drummer, but (in my opinion) his drumming doesn't fit the Dream Theater style. Portnoy had beats that and time signatures that would make you question weather he was actually human or not. Im excited to see what the future of Dream Theater has in store, but it will never be the same without Portnoy.
