Dude, you can't tell today's youth about ANYTHING....I miss the 90s NBA where defense was fierce and in-your-face, with not a lot of prima donnas like this decade. The reason why Jordan is so great (no disrespect to the greatest Bill Russell) is because he came from this era the most dominant player of his time, due to overcoming the defense of teams like the Knicks and Pistons. I'm sorry, but Kobe whines too much for 90s basketball and all that whining will make the refs not blow the whistle..
this was when basketball was at it's best. the teams was so talented defesively and offensively. after the 2003-2004 season basketball started to go down. guys really don't have to work on their skills and the craft anymore. all you got to be is quick now and you can average 20 points a game driving to the basket all night. that's because they took all of the defense out of basketball.
Players today are overall much more talented than 15 years ago. That's why I believe Kobe is more talented than Jordan. Purely because the competition today is overall tougher to play against than what Jordan had to do.
NO, you have that wrong my friend...teams 15 yrs ago were much more defensive-minded, why do you think David Stern implemented so many rules against playing the type of defense teams like the Pistons like to play to open up the offense to put butts in seats?? Kobe would've wilted under the pressure from teams like the Knicks or the Pistons back then. Sorry bro, comp these days don't even hold a candle, in terms of tough to play against, to teams back then.
Also, Kobe going to the hole and getting clotheslined by Rick Mahorn and elbowed by Rodman would've made him think twice about it and settle for jump shots.
This Pistons team was not even at its best...two years ago they were even dirtier...Kobe would be crying all the way to L.A. if he had to go against such a team.
NBA today is made for the highlight reel....not much real defense as before. Back in the day where real men play basketball!
@AController You know just because people like you say that teams today don't play defense doesn't mean it's true. Did any of you watch the 2010 NBA Finals? There was incredible defense being played for 7 games.
@AController yea dude i agree with you fully a perfect example of wat ur sayin is bak in 04 in the finals kobe vs the pistons he couldent do anything against them
@AController This is all bullshit, you know that right? Look at the defensive numbers of the late 80's and early 90's and compare them to the 2000's--no question it's tougher to score now.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol. if you wanna talk about the defense @ 8:35, be fair. Now, there are lots of people who can finish this position with dunks or crazy lay ups. Not like those idiot pistons guys.
8:35-can ANYBODY imagine KB doing this against ANY team right now? Dont think so. And how this so-called MJ no.2 would play against THAT 91' Pistons team? Like a champ or like a LOSER?
chris paul's game is similar to isiah's i think. the tenacity and that little bit of dirtiness, which is good. but what a defensive stop by jordan at the end- a 4 point swing that sealed the game.
the biggest diffrence between Jordan and the rest of today's players e.g, KObe LeBron, Wade etc, is that Jordan had to work for every basket, every shot that he makes
Especially bc players today would stand around complaining to the refs about plays that should have been fouls while these teams would just run circles around them the whole time.
@hooptron not nearly as much of an ass as those wussy pistons were. what a bunch of cry baby asses when they got swept, when is isiah up for parole? isnt he in jail or something?
Watch at exactly 3:58 -- the ball is actually stripped out of Jordan's hand on the way up, but he manages to regain control and nail a fadeaway shot. Amazing. He actually did this again vs. Dumars in 1997, but it was much more pronounced then -- Joe D literally knocked the ball out of MJ's hands on the way up on a pull-up, and the ball bobbled around near MJ's chest, and Jordan regained it in midair, double-clutched, and hit the 18-footer. Insane play.
I have this game on tape and I remember that leap by Isaiah Thomas. Extraordinary. People don't know that he could easily dunk a basketball. He just had small hands. He had to have at least a 40 inch vertical.
I remember watching this game. Man in school they were talking about the Piston fans were running their mouths saying after the first two games they were going to storm back in the mix. Man after the 1st quarter the Bulls were just on their way to 3-0. I knew that they were going to have a great year but I did not think that they would be this good. These guys just came in and took the heart right out of the Pistons. jordan was enjoying every shot thathe made and Pippen was phenominal as well.
If this game was played in today's NBA, there would be no players available by the end of the game because they would all be ejected for flagrant fouls and technicals. Today's NBA is for overpaid crybabies. Back in the day you could play hard without going crazy on the court.
Dude, watch out for the Lakers next season. Pau Gasol is going to fit them like a glove, and they are going to get Bynam back and be at full strength, provided no injuries happen.
Thomas could throw down. He was every bit as athletic as Iverson, he was just too good of a basketball player to jack up crappy shots. You can look around on YouTube, I'm sure they have some highlights of his dunks. It's either Magic or Isiah as best PG ever.
He had the nerve to say Dominique was a flat-out scorer who didn't care about anything else. 'Nique also was blue-collar and would crash the boards and play through pain.
Aguirre was and is an effeminate piece of trash who was very much at home working for Lenny Wilkens, who's just like his sorry self.
By the way, Pippen would've knocked Aguirre out, easily.
Well, Aguirre didn't LEAD anyone to a title. He was barely in the top five on Detroit. In fact, I'm not sure he was in the top five. (In case you didn't know, Isiah had Adrian Dantley run out of Detroit to make room for Aguirre, one of his best friends.)
Dominique, on the other hand, was an amazing scorer who accumulated his points in spite of being double- and triple-teamed.
Back to Detroit, Isiah, Dennis Rodman, Bill Laimbeer, John Salley, and Joe Dumars contributed more than Aguirre.
Yeah, I figured there was a connection between Isiah and Aguirre--both of whom, ironically, grew up in Chicago. I was surprised to learn that Dantley was traded in the middle of the 1989 season--just short of winning his first NBA title. And he has more credentials than Aguirre. THAT, to me, is an even bigger irony.
Oh, well. Detroit fans should be grateful that they won two in spite of him. All the other men you mentioned were indeed important players during those years, plus the Microwave.
Jordan's defensive play at 8:32 to 8:37 is often regarded as one of his best defensive sequences ever. Imagine being able to stop the 2-on-1 break AND being able to snag the rebound to finish it off...pure greatness.
Someone needs to put the introductions on here. Detroit's fans had a rousing ovation for their team, and it was done in old-school fashion, not with stupid lights, rap music, and other trademarks that can be associated with the NBA of the 1990s and NBC's coverage.
I can understand associating those things with the NBA of the 1990's, but why also with NBC? The network couldn't help but broadcast those games in the 1990s, and sometimes the intros weren't shown on TV. If they were, those effects which you mentioned weren't always used. Take the 1997/98 Finals games in Utah for example.
I say so because everything most of what NBC promoted was anything but old school. "Inside Stuff", for example, was right in line with a lot of the garbage of the NBA's animation and lack of substance in the nineties.
NBC didn't recognize or understand the significance of quality. Look at Michael Jordan, for example: NBC just wanted to promote his dunks and ignore his defensive grit. It showed no appreciation of the few great series of the decade and gave us rap music.
In that case, you must be really thankful for folks like hoopsencylopedia and starks23. Most of their MJ games were shown on local networks and/or TNT (and sometimes CBS). They display many facets of MJ's game, including his stealing, his blocking, his jump shots...oh yeah, and the occasional dunk.
Obviously, you don't really know the true history of the Pistons vs. the Bulls. Cause he was the last person on the bulls, from the coaching staff to the general management to be terrified.
Oh my god, two on one Jordan gets the ball back. he is too good. As for the Pistons, I just hated their attitude, you can see it from the end of game 4. I mean, come on, it wasnt everyone. Rodman was a good player, rough but a sportsman. Isiah thomas, I think everyone can now see he was a jerk after all that is happening with the Knicks now a days.
The 7:41 shot and the 2 on 1 fast break that Jordan defended successfully is just amazing. I don't see any player in today's game that will do either of those (with a slightly twisted knee too?)
How about that strip Mike had on James Edwards when he tried to drive! I remember htis series like a minute ago living in Chicago! All the streets were empty during Memorial Day Weekend. Pool Halls, liquor stores, barber shops, and the homie's house is where you found everyone! MEMORIES, Memories, memories...
I think the hatred that existed between the players and the fans has subsided over the years somewhat into more of respect. It still amazes me to this day that years later the Bulls would aquire many of the Pistons in their later championship runs...Rodman, Salley, Edwards. Especially Rodman...I can't tell you much he was hated in Chicago in the early 90's. Then later to become a key player in the Bulls championships, just goes to show how funny life can be.
Did you know that all three Pistons you mentioned were on the team that went 72-10 in 1996? I THOUGHT there was a reason why the Bulls were so good! (Well, besides MJ, of course.)
Yeah. Salley's 2.1 PPG, 2.5 boards, 0.9 assists and Edward's 3.5 PPG, 1.4 boards, and 0.4 assists were a big help to the 96 Bulls. Don't be an idiot. Rodman was the only ex-Piston who was worth anything to the Bulls. Salley and Edwards were simply along for the ride.
I was a huge Bulls fan living in Chicago at the time and I hated the Pistons with a passion. The hatred that existed between these two cities was immense. But as the years have gone by I have come to appreciate all the battles the Bulls and Pistons had. I really believe those epic battles made each team better. And definatley forged the Bulls into the dynasty they would become. Nothing would compare to the tests the Pistons gave them.
Look overall the Bulls swept this Pistons this series and I give the Pistons credit in winning the title in 89 and 90 and probably should have won it in 88. 1991 it was time for the Pistons to fall, sure Isiah missed time that season and we'll never know what could've been if he wasn't hurt. Now all this bashing and saying Stern had it in for the Pistons is ludacris just face it Chicago were able to beat the Pistons and won 3 straight title something Detroit couldn't do so lets move on
The right-back fade at 4:00 and the left-back fade at 7:00 - these are shots only MJ made consistently in history and why he is the only volume shooter to hit 50%. The ability to hit 50% on shots he created is unparalleled. Also, the defense at 8:30 is perhaps the sickest defensive play ever. Stopping the 1 on 2 fastbreak and then getting the rebound outmanned 1 on 3 with the freshly injured knee. This is why MJ never ceased to amaze.
and im sorry...but... what other player possibly EVER could STOP a 3 on 1 fast-break ?!? Jordan one of the greatest, if not THE greatest skilled defender ever..
At the end of a game Jordan was the toughest player both on offense and defense in my opinion. You could easily make a case for 87-93 MJ being one the greatest defenders ever. 95-98 MJ was still amongst the very best, which is incredible because he carried the Bulls on offense as well at an old age.
Detroit played no defense in this series, not because they couldn't, but because they just didn't want to. See, when a series or game is fixed, it's easy to tell because you can see a team who really wants to win and they do what it takes to win. Well Detroit is back-to-back NBA champions and they get swept by a team they've dominated 3 straight years in the regular season and playoffs? No, I'm not buying it. I know the Bulls got better but Detroit just let them run over them on PURPOSE.
I wouldn't really say that. I think for one Chicago grew up and they knew Detroits physical tatics and they were ready for them. And Detroit even after they beat Chicago in 1990 they knew Chicago was coming and Chuck Daley, and Isiah Thomas even said it. Plus Detroit had injuries all through the season. Finally Jordan was able to trust his teamates and they came through. Pippen, Grant, Cartwright, Armstrong, Levingston all had great series against the Pistons. Chicago was better and hungrier
You are right in a sense. Chicago got better but they weren't the better team. Early in the 1991 season, the Pistons really owned the Bulls beating them 105-84 at The Palace, then in the second meeting at Christmas in Chicago Detroit threw the game because Thomas and Laimbeer missed the plane. But then Isiah got hurt in January. Detroit was leading the Central Division in January when Thomas got hurt (missing 34 games) and that's when Chicago started to win......
Yes, the Bulls matured but they weren't good enough to beat Detroit. The Pistons still won 50 games with Thomas missing 34 and made it to the ECF, which shows how good they are. Plus, I think Daly screwed his team by not playing Henderson to rest Thomas/Dumars (who was struggling) and also should've started Tree Rollins and Aguirre to make sure the bench would be: Henderson, Johnson, Salley, Edwards, and Rodman... which would've made Chicago's second unit struggle big time.
I would still say they were the better team, it was their time and yes they did get their butts handed to them earlier that season at the Palace but the team wasn't the same Bulls team that would play them in May in the Playoffs. The Christmas game I don't by that they threw the game because Laimbeet and Thomas missed the flight. They played and Detroit was winning by double figures that game before Chicago came back and won, now the third game when they played and Chicago won in Detroit........
ok Isiah was hurt but it was a close game and Chicago won, and yes I give Detroit credit they came back against Atlanta and beat a very good Boston team but they were to fatigue to hang with a younger and more talented Chicago team that year. Plus the way the Bulls scrambled on defense always bothered Detroit because they would bring Pippen and Jordan up court to press either Thomas or Dumars its what former assistant coach Johnny Bach called "unleashing the doberman's".....
Chicago always trapped Detroit, the only difference in this series was Detroit. I keep saying Chicago got better but Detroit didn't improve from 1990 to 1991. It had everything to do with injuries. EVERYTHING. At that time if Jordan missed 34 games the Bulls would've been a 7th or 8th seed and out in the first round. That's how Chicago was dependant upon Mike.--Which is why the Bulls were bad for the NBA; no real team. Look at Detroit in 1990; they are fast, hungry, and fierce. 1991 just slow.
Chicago would've won the series even without any Pistons' injury. They had homecourt advantage and got better overall, especially Pippen. Almost beat Detroit in 1990. They were a real team, any other claim is complete nonsense. You do not win championship after championship with a one man show period.
I agree, however, that Jordan was in a sense bad for the trend of the NBA; Kids watched him and wanted to emulate his style which is why we have so many MJ wannabes in todays NBA. Not MJ's fault.
This is just where you and I agree. Say Detroit had no injuries--Detroit would've won about 63 or 64 games that year because they won 50 and Isiah missed 34, now I would think Detroit would've won at least 12 more games had Isiah been there for 34 games. They also would've beaten the Bulls in the season series and had homecourt advantage. Not to mention, Detroit didn't NEED the homecourt advantage because in the past they dominated Chicago in the Stadium, just blew games in 1990.
Let me clarify. I disagree with you but I agree Jordan was bad for the NBA because them winning made the NBA all about individuals instead of team basketball. Even when Chicago won their rings in 1991-1993, everybody knew that was all Jordan all the time. Without Mike those first three championship teams would've been teams winning like 45-48 games and losing in the first or second round.
You find out how good a team is without their star. Without Thomas Detroit won 50 games with Zeke missing 34 of those games and Thomas didn't play much in the Boston series and hobbled to end the regular season--the man broke the tendons in his wrist. Take Jordan off of those Bulls' teams or Magic off of the Lakers? They don't do jack. Now people will talk about the '94 Bulls but they won 3 rings so they weren't going to die when Mike left. But the 1991-93 Bulls sucked because of Mike's demand.
If you're saying that the Bulls without Jordan weren't as good as the Pistons without Isiah, I completely agree. That doesn't mean Chicago, outside of Jordan, was a bad team. Because of Jordan's skills, there was simply no need for better complementary players, Bulls won anyway. But they weren't exactly scrubs either and were more than capable of holding their own when Jordan was out of the game. Look no further than the Bulls-Pistons series for proof.
About the Pistons' chance for homecourt without the Isiah injury, that's up for speculation, we will never know. Pippen missed half the season in 97/98 and the Bulls still won 62 games, but you won't see me arguing that they would've won 70+ if it wasn't for his injury. It just doesn't work that way.

Here's where I stand so you can know what I'm about: I loved the 1987-1991 Pistons. Hated the 1991-93 Bulls. I loved the 1995-1998 Bulls. The 1998 Bulls were my team and Pippen missed those games but the NBA was different then, and a lot less physical. Rodman even said they couldn't have won 72 games back in 1989 or in the 80's because the teams were smarter and more physical. But the only competition for Chicago was in 1988-1991, everyone else after that was a picnic.
At that time, they were flat out scrubs. I mean this team struggled with Jordan on the bench. By 1994 they did okay but over an entire season, yes, they would've had like 42-45 wins and been out in the first round without Mike.
Ok I can't deny how Mike sort made it made for the NBA and also Marv pointed out in game 4 that the injuries to Detroit can be used as a copout. And no I wouldn't say the refs cheated for Chicago the Bulls were the more aggressive team they came at the Pistons thats why they shot 42 more free throws. But as a two time DEFENDING!!! world Champion you owe it to you, your, teamates and fans to honor that title and compete for your championship one example I wanted to bring up 2 years later.....
Chicago would be in the same position as Detroit was but down to the Knicks 0-2, but unlike Detroit who bowed out not that much of a fight Chicago would destroy the Knicks in game 3&4, went into Madison Square Garden where at the time had won 27 straight at home and beat them their and closed it out in game 6. That's what you do when your a champion you continue to fight even when the odds are against you and I'm sorry but the Pistons didn't do it that year against the Bulls.
Let's be honest: THERE WAS NO CONSPIRACY AGAINST CHICAGO AS THERE WAS AGAINST DETROIT!!! THE NBA DIDN'T CHANGE THE RULES TO HELP THE KNICKS LIKE THEY CHANGED THE RULES TO HELP CHICAGO BY 1991!!! Plus, Jordan never got hurt at all and the Knicks weren't even competition for Chicago because they weren't smart enough nor could they score. Phil Jackson even said Detroit was more physical than NY. Pippen said it was easy after they won in 1991 because the competition wasn't tough enough. HAHAHA!!!
The flagrant foul rule again. It was brought in to ban cheap fouls from the game, as an attempt to deter contact which, in addition to being against the rules, puts an opponent's safety and health at risk (thanks, wiki).

dbg23 2 years ago
NO, you have that wrong my friend...teams 15 yrs ago were much more defensive-minded, why do you think David Stern implemented so many rules against playing the type of defense teams like the Pistons like to play to open up the offense to put butts in seats?? Kobe would've wilted under the pressure from teams like the Knicks or the Pistons back then. Sorry bro, comp these days don't even hold a candle, in terms of tough to play against, to teams back then.
WutzAMet 2 years ago 3
Also, Kobe going to the hole and getting clotheslined by Rick Mahorn and elbowed by Rodman would've made him think twice about it and settle for jump shots.

I remember watching this game. Man in school they were talking about the Piston fans were running their mouths saying after the first two games they were going to storm back in the mix. Man after the 1st quarter the Bulls were just on their way to 3-0. I knew that they were going to have a great year but I did not think that they would be this good. These guys just came in and took the heart right out of the Pistons. jordan was enjoying every shot thathe made and Pippen was phenominal as well.

lol to aguirre challenging pippen to a fight in the stadium parking lot.
60425 3 years ago
Mark Aguirre's an overrated stiff.
By the way, Pippen would've knocked Aguirre out, easily.
objectivethirdparty 3 years ago
In that case, 'tis a shame Nique has no titles and Aguirre has two. Luckily, Pippen has six while Aguirre won two.
mackcrusher 3 years ago
Well, Aguirre didn't LEAD anyone to a title. He was barely in the top five on Detroit. In fact, I'm not sure he was in the top five. (In case you didn't know, Isiah had Adrian Dantley run out of Detroit to make room for Aguirre, one of his best friends.)
Dominique, on the other hand, was an amazing scorer who accumulated his points in spite of being double- and triple-teamed.
Back to Detroit, Isiah, Dennis Rodman, Bill Laimbeer, John Salley, and Joe Dumars contributed more than Aguirre.
objectivethirdparty 3 years ago 2
Yeah, I figured there was a connection between Isiah and Aguirre--both of whom, ironically, grew up in Chicago. I was surprised to learn that Dantley was traded in the middle of the 1989 season--just short of winning his first NBA title. And he has more credentials than Aguirre. THAT, to me, is an even bigger irony.
Oh, well. Detroit fans should be grateful that they won two in spite of him. All the other men you mentioned were indeed important players during those years, plus the Microwave.
mackcrusher 3 years ago
I don't think anybody has ever said that, that's what made him the best
bookem207 3 years ago
Jordan's defensive play at 8:32 to 8:37 is often regarded as one of his best defensive sequences ever. Imagine being able to stop the 2-on-1 break AND being able to snag the rebound to finish it off...pure greatness.
higherthehighest 3 years ago
Someone needs to put the introductions on here. Detroit's fans had a rousing ovation for their team, and it was done in old-school fashion, not with stupid lights, rap music, and other trademarks that can be associated with the NBA of the 1990s and NBC's coverage.
objectivethirdparty 3 years ago
I can understand associating those things with the NBA of the 1990's, but why also with NBC? The network couldn't help but broadcast those games in the 1990s, and sometimes the intros weren't shown on TV. If they were, those effects which you mentioned weren't always used. Take the 1997/98 Finals games in Utah for example.
mackcrusher 3 years ago
Good question.
It showed no appreciation of the few great series of the decade and gave us rap music.
objectivethirdparty 3 years ago
In that case, you must be really thankful for folks like hoopsencylopedia and starks23. Most of their MJ games were shown on local networks and/or TNT (and sometimes CBS). They display many facets of MJ's game, including his stealing, his blocking, his jump shots...oh yeah, and the occasional dunk.

Then later to become a key player in the Bulls championships, just goes to show how funny life can be.
shocker315 4 years ago 2
Did you know that all three Pistons you mentioned were on the team that went 72-10 in 1996? I THOUGHT there was a reason why the Bulls were so good! (Well, besides MJ, of course.)
mackcrusher 3 years ago

Nothing would compare to the tests the Pistons gave them.
shocker315 4 years ago 2

At the end of a game Jordan was the toughest player both on offense and defense in my opinion. Detroit threw this game.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
how do you figure??
jaboo82681 4 years ago
Detroit played no defense in this series, not because they couldn't, but because they just didn't want to. See, when a series or game is fixed, it's easy to tell because you can see a team who really wants to win and they do what it takes to win. Well Detroit is back-to-back NBA champions and they get swept by a team they've dominated 3 straight years in the regular season and playoffs? No, I'm not buying it. I know the Bulls got better but Detroit just let them run over them on PURPOSE.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
I wouldn't really say that. I think for one Chicago grew up and they knew Detroits physical tatics and they were ready for them. And Detroit even after they beat Chicago in 1990 they knew Chicago was coming and Chuck Daley, and Isiah Thomas even said it. Plus Detroit had injuries all through the season. Finally Jordan was able to trust his teamates and they came through. Pippen, Grant, Cartwright, Armstrong, Levingston all had great series against the Pistons. Chicago was better and hungrier
jaboo82681 4 years ago
You are right in a sense. Chicago got better but they weren't the better team. Early in the 1991 season, the Pistons really owned the Bulls beating them 105-84 at The Palace, then in the second meeting at Christmas in Chicago Detroit threw the game because Thomas and Laimbeer missed the plane. But then Isiah got hurt in January. Detroit was leading the Central Division in January when Thomas got hurt (missing 34 games) and that's when Chicago started to win......
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
Yes, the Bulls matured but they weren't good enough to beat Detroit. The Pistons still won 50 games with Thomas missing 34 and made it to the ECF, which shows how good they are. Plus, I think Daly screwed his team by not playing Henderson to rest Thomas/Dumars (who was struggling) and also should've started Tree Rollins and Aguirre to make sure the bench would be: Henderson, Johnson, Salley, Edwards, and Rodman... which would've made Chicago's second unit struggle big time.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
I would still say they were the better team, it was their time and yes they did get their butts handed to them earlier that season at the Palace but the team wasn't the same Bulls team that would play them in May in the Playoffs. The Christmas game I don't by that they threw the game because Laimbeet and Thomas missed the flight. They played and Detroit was winning by double figures that game before Chicago came back and won, now the third game when they played and Chicago won in Detroit........
jaboo82681 4 years ago
ok Isiah was hurt but it was a close game and Chicago won, and yes I give Detroit credit they came back against Atlanta and beat a very good Boston team but they were to fatigue to hang with a younger and more talented Chicago team that year. Plus the way the Bulls scrambled on defense always bothered Detroit because they would bring Pippen and Jordan up court to press either Thomas or Dumars its what former assistant coach Johnny Bach called "unleashing the doberman's".....
jaboo82681 4 years ago
Chicago always trapped Detroit, the only difference in this series was Detroit. I keep saying Chicago got better but Detroit didn't improve from 1990 to 1991. It had everything to do with injuries. EVERYTHING. At that time if Jordan missed 34 games the Bulls would've been a 7th or 8th seed and out in the first round. That's how Chicago was dependant upon Mike.--Which is why the Bulls were bad for the NBA; no real team. Look at Detroit in 1990; they are fast, hungry, and fierce. 1991 just slow.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
Chicago would've won the series even without any Pistons' injury. They had homecourt advantage and got better overall, especially Pippen. Almost beat Detroit in 1990. They were a real team, any other claim is complete nonsense. You do not win championship after championship with a one man show period.
I agree, however, that Jordan was in a sense bad for the trend of the NBA; Kids watched him and wanted to emulate his style which is why we have so many MJ wannabes in todays NBA. Not MJ's fault.
kOrOne79 4 years ago
This is just where you and I agree. Say Detroit had no injuries--Detroit would've won about 63 or 64 games that year because they won 50 and Isiah missed 34, now I would think Detroit would've won at least 12 more games had Isiah been there for 34 games. They also would've beaten the Bulls in the season series and had homecourt advantage. Not to mention, Detroit didn't NEED the homecourt advantage because in the past they dominated Chicago in the Stadium, just blew games in 1990.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
Let me clarify. I disagree with you but I agree Jordan was bad for the NBA because them winning made the NBA all about individuals instead of team basketball. Even when Chicago won their rings in 1991-1993, everybody knew that was all Jordan all the time. Without Mike those first three championship teams would've been teams winning like 45-48 games and losing in the first or second round.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
You find out how good a team is without their star. Without Thomas Detroit won 50 games with Zeke missing 34 of those games and Thomas didn't play much in the Boston series and hobbled to end the regular season--the man broke the tendons in his wrist. Take Jordan off of those Bulls' teams or Magic off of the Lakers? They don't do jack. Now people will talk about the '94 Bulls but they won 3 rings so they weren't going to die when Mike left. But the 1991-93 Bulls sucked because of Mike's demand.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
If you're saying that the Bulls without Jordan weren't as good as the Pistons without Isiah, I completely agree. That doesn't mean Chicago, outside of Jordan, was a bad team. Because of Jordan's skills, there was simply no need for better complementary players, Bulls won anyway. But they weren't exactly scrubs either and were more than capable of holding their own when Jordan was out of the game. Look no further than the Bulls-Pistons series for proof.
kOrOne79 4 years ago
About the Pistons' chance for homecourt without the Isiah injury, that's up for speculation, we will never know. Pippen missed half the season in 97/98 and the Bulls still won 62 games, but you won't see me arguing that they would've won 70+ if it wasn't for his injury. It just doesn't work that way.
kOrOne79 4 years ago

Here's where I stand so you can know what I'm about: I loved the 1987-1991 Pistons. Hated the 1991-93 Bulls. I loved the 1995-1998 Bulls. The 1998 Bulls were my team and Pippen missed those games but the NBA was different then, and a lot less physical. Rodman even said they couldn't have won 72 games back in 1989 or in the 80's because the teams were smarter and more physical. But the only competition for Chicago was in 1988-1991, everyone else after that was a picnic.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
"...the only competition for Chicago was in 1988-1991, everyone else after that was a picnic."
Let's just say I have a completely different view on that and move on.
kOrOne79 4 years ago
At that time, they were flat out scrubs. I mean this team struggled with Jordan on the bench. By 1994 they did okay but over an entire season, yes, they would've had like 42-45 wins and been out in the first round without Mike.
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
What I meant was that they didn't screw up when Jordan sat on the bench to take a breather, quite the contrary. They played pretty well.
kOrOne79 4 years ago
Ok I can't deny how Mike sort made it made for the NBA and also Marv pointed out in game 4 that the injuries to Detroit can be used as a copout. And no I wouldn't say the refs cheated for Chicago the Bulls were the more aggressive team they came at the Pistons thats why they shot 42 more free throws. But as a two time DEFENDING!!! world Champion you owe it to you, your, teamates and fans to honor that title and compete for your championship one example I wanted to bring up 2 years later.....
jaboo82681 4 years ago
Chicago would be in the same position as Detroit was but down to the Knicks 0-2, but unlike Detroit who bowed out not that much of a fight Chicago would destroy the Knicks in game 3&4, went into Madison Square Garden where at the time had won 27 straight at home and beat them their and closed it out in game 6. That's what you do when your a champion you continue to fight even when the odds are against you and I'm sorry but the Pistons didn't do it that year against the Bulls.
jaboo82681 4 years ago
HAHAHA!!!
3DStoneCt 4 years ago
The flagrant foul rule again. It was brought in to ban cheap fouls from the game, as an attempt to deter contact which, in addition to being against the rules, puts an opponent's safety and health at risk (thanks, wiki).
