Thanks for posting this beautiful classic. The sheet music for the piano part for Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
This hits so, so close to home for me. I had a very good friend whom I had a close relationship with. We stopped and just stayed good friends. I hadn't seen her in about a year or so until I saw her coming out of a grocery store on Christmas Eve! We gave each other a hug and a light kiss. That old familiar pain came back to both of us. She pased away a few years ago. This reminds me of her. I miss my friend.
@speedviper47 : This song always beings tears to my eyes. I've been there too, except it was at church on Christmas Eve 1987, she had moved to Colorado and was back in town for Christmas. We were never more than friends, but she always was special to me. We stayed in touch for a few years and saw each other at Christmas but we drifted apart again about 1994. I wondered where she was, and then I found out that she died of cancer. RIP Ellen 1958-2009.
the snow turning to rain is also a moment of finality to say that they can never go back to their old relationnship or back to that time, despite the fact that they had a glimpse of their past for a short time. Snow bears some sense of hope, but the snow turning to rain emphasizes the hopelessness the old lover feels for his long lost love
I have always loved this song and the words are so very hauntingly beautiful. I just do not get the very end of the lyrics " The snow turns into rain. Anyone knows?
The snow did turn into rain....to my lost love of youth, and to Dan for putting it into words. Thank you and RIP. Hope my old love hears this. To innocence!
I have been reading that a tribute concert my occur with some greats like Graham Nash, James T., Jackson B. and The Eagles covering Dan's songs. That would be huge.
His music: So wonderful & full of insight & vulnerability (which in the privacy of our interior worlds, allowed even well-defended & emotionally walled-off men such as myself not only to feel but also to express our tenderness). In a particular four-year period (undergraduate years), I can track passages, transitions, ups & downs, triumphs & heart-breaks, loves won & lost by certain Fogelberg songs & albums. (Beautiful quote borrowed from Shoshin Seishu).
Drove many thousands of miles through Canada, U.S. and India listening to Dan from the 70's and on. I always thought his lyrics were profound linked to a music that was unique and beautiful. Saw him in concert three times.
Didn't know until now - almost a month later - that Dan was gone. We'll all miss him and thank the heavens that he was here with us all.
one of my sweetest memories is times I went to DF concerts..last one was July 4th--yes the 4th and he thanked all of us for being there that day. Denver. His last tour..because he found out he had the cancer the next spring. My heart broke when he passed. So young. I loved him..so many of us did. Still do : )
He had so much energy at his concerts! gave us so much for our money, a good man. I, like many women dreamt of his handsome face and beautiful voice.
To the Morning (from Home Free) may very well be the most beautiful song ever written and recorded...if you have not listened to it, do. Dan wrote and recorded it at either 17 or 18 yrs old...magical talent.
I have loved his music more than for any other musicians in the last 30 years and I have seen him live @ a dozen times. His wonderful music stands for itself. On his website someone wrote "it is hard to imagine heaven, without Dan there". So very true
This is one of the great Christmas songs of all time. It captures longing for the past, mixed with sad optimism in a way that we can all identify with. Only a decent, loving man could have written such a song. Good luck Dan, and thanks.
Laurie Brock in Houston, Texas, when ever I here this song I think of our chance meeting in a grocery store in 1975. I know you loved Dan Fogelburg's music and I think of you every time I hear one of his song's. Know this: I will always love you and i think of you almost every day even though we have not talked since that day so very long ago...David Berry
May God enjoy seeing to you in Heaven as much as I did here, your music has always had a special place...See you soon my friend..( but not too soon)..Chris.
R.I.P Dan i loved your music we will miss you dearly it really brings back those old days of when i was much younger back in high school . i don't even think that there as many musicians out there anymore like you are with such meaningful songs that actually make sense.we miss you trully goodbye Dan.......
I always sing "Same Old Lang Syne" around Christmas time at our local bar. It will be harder to do this year but will have much more meaning to it. Dan was always one of my favorites growing up. His music had tons of passion and emotion and told a story brilliantly. he will be missed tremendously.
Heard of Dan's passing. His music was an inspiration to me growing up in the 80's, and being in highschool. Your music actuallly had meaning to them, and that was a good thing. My heart goes out to your family. "I" WE WILL MISS YOU, RIP. SAME OLD LANG SYNE WAS MY FAVORITE
I was simply searching for this video, as it has always been my all-time favorite Christmas song, As it is with many, this song touches me in a way few songs can. When I learned that he had passed away this morning, I was shocked. I'm sure I speak for many, when I say the world has lost a legend. Thank youDan, for all you have done for us with your God given talent. You will be missed.
Learning of Dan's passing is heart breaking. He is a very talented man. His songs tell great stories with such meanings. He'll be missed on Earth but I know he will bring joy in Hgeave. Dan you will be missed but forever in my heart! Rest in Peace.
I just saw the news story that Dan Fogelberg died. This song has always made me cry - especially today. It reminds me of one ex in particular, who I still miss desperately after 7 years. Damn.
this is the most emotive song of dan's - a tale of missed love and opportunity - it's a pity songs of this calibre are few and far between in mainstream music we sometimes have to endure on the radio!!

Lots of other song evoke more passion and feeling than this simple minded drivel. Enjoy it if you must but please dont say that I dont know what "good music" is when you feel that this is one of the "prettiest songs ever" -
the album this is from: the innocent age, certified double platinum in the us, alone. 'dan fogelberg's greates hits' also containing it, certified triple platinum
In fact, four of Dan's first SEVEN RELEASES are certified Double Platinum. His first TEN ALBUMS are certified! And all it will take to get the results for the next ten is a request to the label(s)! So far, conservatively, Dan's ALBUM sales are around 20 MILLION!
I am with you 100% DrayvensCrow....forget dbeyer ...but, of course, I am biased ...a true Dan Fan till the end..but so were so many of Dan's own peers. That says it all.
Simple minded drivel...sounds much like your comment. Perhaps when you ACTUALLY LISTEN to it, you'll finally learn why this song is a classic. I really feel sorry for you not knowing why it's a special song and why Mr. Fogelberg was a special man to the rest of us.

Again ? what kind of idiot are you? get over it already dipshit - I posted this 3-4 weeks ago and still think that it is a "simple" lame song- move on already
And you have certainly shown that you are so much better than the rest of us by your comments. It must be difficult to be you, surrounded by so many who don't think like you and don't have to talk down to others when our opinions aren't the same as yours. Say....maybe if you just go away, you won't have to suffer being around us. Nah, you'll just find somewhere else to be pitiful...

Geez if that entire statement isnt a case of the pot calling the kettle black - I voiced my opinion a month ago and a few of the DF fan club decided to try and pile on - doesnt bother me that much obviously and based on your favs playlist these simple songs appeal to you - if you are happy with that great, but dont try and act like your musical tastes supercede mine, you will only make yourself look more foolish than you aleady have-

My Heart is fine but maybe not as soft as some of the fruitcakes around here. Depth is actually what a song like this could really use. Maybe someone should tell dan ?
Again, "Maybe someone should tell Dan?"=Poor taste. Have your opinion but putting it like that is just not right. Perhaps I should put it in words you'll understand....Dude! That's just soooo bogus! Pull your head out, ass! Is that better?
Well it could be misconstrued as a christmas song. Because the events happened on christmas eve which would make everything twice as emotional then if it happened any other day. The song basically is about meeting someone from your past that you cared deeply about around the holidays.I was only 1 or 2 when this song came out but I remeber hearing it as a kid and thinking it was one of the most amazing songs ever.
Nothing gets my goat more than seeing this great song about a man's real life personal experience of being hurt by the same girl twice turned into a misinterpretation of a Christmas song.
