The correct term on Pontiac v8s is intermediate block sence pontiacs are to big to be small blocks and to small to be big blocks, a 326 is the same block has a 455 cept it's journal and bore are smaller meaning if you consider a 455 a big block then a 326 is a big block, if you consider a 326 a smallblock then a 455 is to. Calling any Pontiac v8 from 59-79 ( cept the 301) a smallblock or bigblock shows lack of knowledge about Pontiac history.
I consider the 421,428,455 Pontiac big blocks. I do like all Pontiacs and had my share of 350's 400's and 455's and my best one was the 71 455 with a ram air cam. The nice thing is they share a lot of the same parts. There is many differences on the motors depending on the year they were built. 1976 was the last year they built the Pontiac 455. That's why they started using the olds 403,and chevy 350.
Not sure if you're trying to justify pontiac has a big block or not, but the main size has nothing to do with a big or small block, you can essentially have any mains you want in any block. Chevrolet Small Blocks had 3 different main sizes, and at least 6 different bore spacings.... from 262-400
heyheyhey id rather not fight with other gm guys and rather wipe the rice off the streets (ie four cylinder cars with just exhaust that claim to be fast

@gypman921 *Insert foot in mouth.* You said "i imagine next youre gonna say the 455 never came in a 67.." Actually, it didn't. @bad67pontiac Pontiac did produce big blocks. The 326 all the way up to a 455 except with the 301 being a "metric engine" as it was a smaller block of it's own. FYI, the 400 is what made Pontiac.
@bad67pontiac Not to rain in on youre parade but it was the journal size that classified them as small blocks and big blocks. Sure it may not be technicall correct but hey it is what it is
@gypman921 sounds like a few chevy converts.... that journal size thing is not the way to classify if there is such a thing as big/small block yac. if you say anything about big/small block to any vet yac, you will have you car guy card taken.
how bout we do this the right way and just have a few blocks and heads, grind off all casting numbers and then we can figure out what is the truth, you will not be able to tell the difference unlike your chevy fans that you could actually tell the difference.
Pontiac had no big or small blocks. they are all the same from the 326-455. different heads and stroke made the cubes different but ALL the blocks are the same.
lmao are you serious dude i have a 67 gto with a 455 and i know for a fact the heads from a 389 are about 3 inches to short to bolt on...lol yes pontiac had big and small blocks. example fit a 301 pontiac head on a 400 block...........AINT HAPPENING. do some research before you type.
@gypman921 you need to do more homework the reason you bolts dont work is because you put them in the wrong hole. @StSt89 true almost all the heads are interchangeable, but 389 head has a different valve angle,so if they are installed on a 455 you could run into clearance issues with the pistons.
@monabang no they didnt. do some research. all of the pontiac v8s are the exact same block. They are not considered big or small blocks. And even the pontiac 350 is the same as the rest. learn something before you get into an argument with a pontiac expert.
@Ajacques8000 They did make the 301 in the late 70's which is sometimes called a smallblock, but no one who can claim to be a hot rodder wants one of them things.
Typically in the late 70's Trans-Ams, if you got a stick, you got a Pontiac motor. Automatics had 403 Olds motors.
@Ajacques8000 I agreed with you bud. I have a pontiac 455 in my T/A. I don't have a pontiac 'big block'. 455 is the largest factory displacement poncho engine. However, the Pontiac 455 is NOT a big block. Hence, Pontiac doesn't have a big block... just (as you said I believe) different bores and strokes and in some cases such as the panzi 301 even a different crank journal size. Maybe.
